Miyamoto interviewed by ´Maxim´ and ´Famitsu´

Hyrule.net cites the current issue of Maxim Magazine with the following interview snippet by Shigeru Miyamoto:
Maxim: Don't you want to make an ol'-fashioned R-rated game?

Miyamoto: I would say the games that we're working on now, like the new Zelda, Twilight Princess, has hardcore content. And if you look at the Revolution's controllers, there's a nunchaku-style controller expansion that's really well suited to first-person shooters.
Maxim Magazine does not have the current issue online. I have mailed them, though, to ask for verification of this quote. It would be interesting enough if Miyamoto really was interviewed by what is euphemistically called a ´men´s magazine´. His outspoken commitment to mature titles could be interpreted as ushering in a new era for the company.

Secondly, Next Generation cites a Famitsu interview with Miyamoto and quotes these interview snippets:
Though games are things made by great efforts of skill, it is important to remember that they are also made by people.

Before making a game, one must understand precisely how it will end.

A game that keeps a smile on the player's face is a wonderful thing.

Nintendo's theme for 2006 will be 'Create new fun.' 'Spread the fun of games to everyone.' To do this, we must return to the beginning, to recapture the essence that made people who enjoy games even now enjoy them in the first place.

'Presentation' is not what kind of picture you paint; it is how you behold your beholder.
Albeit far less concrete, these quotes also contain interesting references, particularly ´fun´ and ´presentation´. In general, Miyamoto seems to want to suggest a return to the old-school days of gaming. I am reminded of the eighties when there was far less of a dicision between core and casual gamers. A game like Pac-Man was enjoyed by both groups.

But doesn´t this contradict the first quote? Where is Nintendo heading? Towards innocent and new types of fun games that can be enjoyed by everyone - or more mature games that will end up with a higher age rating?

I trust Miyamoto. I'm sure he has something up his sleeve. He keeps dropping riddles and I can't understand them now. However, I think that when he said that they would go back to the beginning, I think he meant getting lots of third party games and making LOADS of QUALITY games.

Hi Nick. Very good point. Speaking to Maxim, Miyamoto may have sought to overstress the emphasis on mature games a little.

After all, albeit wrong, they have been accused of being ´kiddy´ for years now.

How about both ?
Isn't Nintendo an "and" company, after all ?

Hi everyone. About the Splitfish DualFX "L-Type Controller" for the PS2 being an apparent rip-off of the Rev controller: It´s a kind of laser pointer, so it´s 2D. It´s not even close, don´t worry.

Bah. Couldn't have been otherwise I guess, since it's designed for the PS2.

I don't see what the confusion is with the Maxim snippet..

He's saying the Revolution FHC will lend itself well towards First Person Shooter's which are primarily mature titles..

He didn't say Nintendo was developing them in-house.

why comment when nick said all that needed to be said.

The Link pic confused me, I thought it was the first post... ha, I haven't even read the posts since the Rev 06 speculation

I don't see much confusion. He thinks Zelda is hardcore or for mature people too, but I don't think that means Zelda:GTA. I've always thought NIntendo's big games have been as sophisticated gameplay-wise as anything out there. I think the word 'mature' is used incorrectly when talking about vids. I really think 'hip' is a more accurate description.

Hey falafelkid, what do you make of this? Nothing to do with your current post, but do you think real or fake?

It is fake anonymous.

Are you guessing it is fake, seen it before (confirming fake), or just don't want to believe it?

Splitfish ... make something call "EYE FX3D" (VR) for PS2 it's only 69.95 $ And since it's 3rd-part and thay still get profit ....

But nintendo do some thing price ~100$ or more ... (If nintendo not aim for zero-day profit for revolution)

If nintendo making VR it's can fit price 200$ (Revoluition ~150$+ VR sub 70$) ... but last time thay only say about under 300$

... all price is estimate (Not by me) And we don't know it's VR or even part of ´presentation´ or not

Nintendo is now, like Reggie has said a couple of times "an and company, not OR, AND".
