+++Back in business+++

Hello, I´m back from my trip to Mallorca. I would like to thank everyone who kept me up to date by posting news during my absence. I regularly checked your entries via my mobile and will post some comments on what happened in the last two weeks tonight.

In the meantime, I have some bad news for everyone. Jim Merrick is no longer with Nintendo of Europe. As of today, he is going back to the States to rejoin NOA. That is why I have been told that he is unable to answer my questions. I apologize to everyone who has been waiting for this exclusive.

welcome back my friend.

to bad of the questions. maybe someone els can help you..

I read somewhere that Merick used to work for NoA but was too much the big mouth type, a little like Allard, and that it was why he was sent to NoE. So maybe NoA considers he has redeemed himself with the good work he did here in Europe. Do you know anything about this ?

"Broken Saints Revolution Rumors
Fresh, right out of the oven speculation!
by Juan Castro

April 25, 2005 - In the middle of last week, the Broken Saint's website posted claims they knew the secret behind Nintendo's upcoming console, codenamed Revolution. Now, if it's one thing the Web isn't short on, it's people claiming they know what drives Nintendo's Revolution. What makes the claim on Broken Saints compelling, however, is that Brooke Burgess, the man behind the site, is actually in a position to know. Or at the very least, in a position where savory strips of information may be floating around, just waiting to be picked up by wary ears.
Well, it looks like Broken Saints has gone and posted its much-anticipated theory on what makes the Nintendo Revolution revolutionary. At the core of the theory sits how Revolution will display games: through a form of real-time 3D projection. That's right folks, along the lines of a classic 50s monster movie. Nintendo itself has stated that what it plans to use on Revolution isn't all that unique, only that it has never been applied to videogames. Taking that into account, plus recent patents filed by Nintendo, and it doesn't sound all that far fetched, argues Burgess.

If that's not enough, he goes on. During the ShoWest film conference, a panel featuring George Lucus, Robert Zemekis, James Cameron, Robert Rodriguez, and a satellite feed from Peter Jackson discuss their plans to integrate cheap digital stereoscopic 3D into major theater chains by 2007. Here's where things get interesting: Burgess claims to know an agent who spoke to Robert Rodriguez, stating they knew of a game machine that would exploit this new wave of 3D entertainment well before Hollywood could jump in on the market.

Burgess goes on to say he spoke to an industry friend about his new theory, to which the industry friend said that Nintendo had shown a real-time 3D add-on for GameCube behind closed doors. When? At last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Furthermore, Burgess claims the Revolution will certainly sport wireless controllers, among other, unknown wireless capabilities. Also, according to Burgess, the Revolution controller will feature either a touch-screen or some form of proprietary PDA device.

As for gyroscopic controllers, the Revolution will indeed use them. Burgess references several inside "sources" who claim they know Revolution controllers will support positional shifts as experienced in Kirby's Tilt 'n' Tumble. Not all games will support the feature, but Burgess states that at least one Revolution launch title will.

This is all speculation, of course, but there you have it.

Stay tuned for more."

hey falafelkid, how was it at the "ballermann", lol ;-)

a lot of germans love mallorca because of alcohol, alcohol and mor alcohol. even though its a country worth seeing , most people (especially young people) go there for partying all the day... (and maybe all the night too)

mallorca is a country?

For the uninformed, I believe Mallorca is in Spain. To the point, welcome back Falafelkid, hope you had a wonderful holiday and can now come back and update us with glorious revolution news!

P.S. I hope you avoided those unruly British tourists (just jokes folks!).

I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the rumors that came out of Broken Saints way back when. Brooke Burgess was right about the controller being gyroscopic, and was one of the first to insist that there was another piece of the puzzle beyond beyond the controller, namely the display. Sure, the gyroscopic controller was somewhat of an easy pick, but as far as I can tell, the stereoscopic 3D rumor practically originated from Broken Saints. No, I don't believe that Brooke Burgess of Broken Saints has any inside information, but I wouldn't dismiss those rumors quite yet.

BTW, welcome back Falafelkid.

What's the new secret about the Rev? I really don't see it being 3d stuff. With the Rev controller and the DS, Nitendo has taken existing techs and incorporated them into their videogame devices.

I don't see that 3d stuff in use anywhere.

I saw touchscreens before the DS. I've seen gryo-mice for the pc for years. I've seen dual screens. The mic has been around forever.

If the Rev's last secret is a new tech it's something we've seen before but just not in vids. It's also got to cheap enough to fit into a $200 game machine.

Or my other guess would be it would have something to do with old games and new ways to play them.

that blog made me laugh because the game developer is creating a game based on the first two ideas he got...

sorry kraid your idea will not become a game... ... and we'll never see the alien-humanoids... Damn.

ooh sorry welcome back, another job for you falafelkid, this time a geme developer.

actually the 3d technology is not that far fetched of an idea. there is an article on avsforum.com about how a few of the korean audio video companies want to make it the standard for in home televisions by 2010 and it is even being backed by the korean government. the article was posted on the front page of the website and was from around the time of the broken saints stuff. sorry for the long post.

on the secret:

“People’s idea that video games were American grade school kids with their face pressed up against the TV made us want to design the new controller. Boring things will become interesting. But, I can’t say any more.”

He's definately talking about the controller in the latest quote, but he is saying that the inspiration for the controller's motion capture spawned from their disappointment with the stationary televsion.

"It's convenient to make games that are played on TVs. But I always wanted to have a custom-sized screen that wasn't the typical four-cornered cathode-ray-tube TV. I've always thought that games would eventually break free of the confines of a TV screen to fill an entire room. But I would rather not say anything more about that."

What he says makes me think of virtual reality headgear one plugs a reVmote into seperate from the one(s) held in the hand(s). This would get rid of any worries about not having an analog stick when dual wielding remotes.

more quotes from people who should know:

"Akihiro Hino (producer at Level 5, ´True Fantasy Live Online´, ´Dragon Quest VIII´) believes that the Revolution will give birth to new types of games. He is personally interested in making an RPG where you hold a shield in one hand, a sword in the other and mount a head set on our head"

"We invented the current way a console is played - in front of a television and holding a controller - but maybe that image will change." - Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President
May 13, 2004

"The concept of a home system today is defined as hardware that you tether to a box (TV), and you are tethered to it via a controller; we think that's an old paradigm."
- Reginald Fils-Aime

Psionicist:

"I thought you ought to know that almost everyone on the Nsider forums has gone retarded because of IGN's article about the Revolution "barely being more powerful than the Xbox", which had no specifically cited sources and are basing their information on pre-release development kits, and no finished GPU."

And what`s about this?:

"That stated, many third parties have been partially briefed by Nintendo representatives about the Revolution hardware, its overall horsepower, and the Big N's plan for the console."

"Third parties have revealed to us that the console will top out with 128MBs of RAM, and possibly even less. One studio would not give us an exact figure, but did say, "The same as GameCube plus an extra 64MB of main RAM." That number is by comparison nearly triple the amount of memory in GameCube. However, it is a far cry from the 512MBs present in Xbox 360."

However. Iwata told us, that when we turn on revolution and see the graphics, we will say: `wow!´

And I believe him. (3D anyone?)

Hi everyone and thank you ever so much for your kind comments. Summing them up, my trip to Mallorca was very nice. We just avoided the thunderstorms and actually had lovely weather. Mallorca is one of the balearic islands off Spain and yes there was one unruly British tourist there - my girlfriend ;)

For the on-topic stuff I will create a new post.

We have to think about price. And it must not too expensive to. Don't you think so ?

Falafelkid said...

Hi Pi. You are right. Nintendo will aim for a low price tag - $250 at the most. Reread some of my earliest posts. You will find that 3D stereoscopic technology could cost less than $100 on the market. Also consider that the Revolution would only need hardware similar to the GameCube, so the less expensive console hardware and the more expensive projection technology could even out.

Falafelkid said...

Oh, and thanks to Kraid and Anonymous for finding two new blogs.

RGB said...

IGN have also a revolution part on their site now which has some developers comments.

Not to say they still have final kits yet since they mention that they still havent to use the GPU of the Hollywood nor the Broadway.

There were also mentions of the ram being only 128MB and may end up being less.

If it is indeed a less spec system I think there must be for sure another big surprise that will clearly be an advantage over other systems. The remote control cant be it.

One dev was mentioning it was basically a souped up xbox. Whether or not it was on a final kit is another story.

See IGN new revolution subsite for more details.

@ Falafelkid

I red that the 3D-technology, wich will be in some cinemas in the end of 2007, needs glasses for the audience and a `cleaner´.

Do you know, what kind of cleaner that could be? I mean, if Nintendo will use this type of technology, it`s important, if it needs an hardware add-on or not.

I hope it`ll be needed, because of...
