ATI / Revolution tech demo screens

Thanks (once again) to Raphael for giving me the link to two of these screens. All of them can be found on the French site JeuxVideo.com. They all appear to be pre-rendered, but bear both the ATI and Retro Studios logo.

The screenshots further reference the ´R520´, which is a new ATI graphics chip. No official word on this chip yet. But there is detailed information about the R520 over at the Neowin forums. By the way, the ´R500´ is rumoured to be the Xbox360 GPU, according to some.

There is also a reference to ´ModelShading´, which is followed by the trademark symbol. However, there is no such trademark filed at either the US trademark office or the Industrial Property Digital Library of Japan. That alone makes me very suspicious.

The only aspects that are in favour of the screens are their quality, quantity and that they make a good match. We have never had so many alleged screens before that also really fit together. Remember the Xenias screens? They looked very different. This lot is, at least, done in a coherent style.

However, could the ´Hollywood´GPU really be a super-advanced chip like the R520? and would the first screens that surface really feature unfamiliar Science Fiction characters rather than the famous Nintendo characters? I guess my first stop is to check DeviantArt rather than checking with ATI.

EDIT All of them are fake. They are the winning entries to the ´Grand Space Opera Challenge´, a computer art challenge. Find them here. Thanks and kudos to Alex and Benihana for posting the link in the comments. That´s another one down, only another million alleged Revolution screenshots to go.

Hmm, they really look cool, but I've found them also here: www.forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=121&page=3&sort=dateline&order=&pp=25&daysprune=-1

So, they're not from Retro-Studios, nor from Ati, I think.

But, good work, dude. :-P

Whether these are actual in-gaime screenshots doesn't matter. I always see people writing "FAKE!" like they have the magic eye or something.
What we are being shown is the potential graphical output of the REV.
If you people would focus on the "Game" you would understand that Nintendo is revealing information to its fans in subtle ways before it is made official - for security reasons. SeriousGamer007 said he would be releasing pictures of Revs "potential" very soon. This is what he released. He said he wished to have shown actual game footage but that isn't what he got.
Just like when he commented on a horrible zelda fake that looked like it was from the 360. He said he wouldn't post it - then it(the one with the grass and the monument with runes on it or whatever) showed up on this site and other sites. It was treated like some new rumour even though it had been shown along time ago.

Falafelkid said...

Hi Anonymous. You have a point of shouting FAKE too soon. I agree, we should examine everything before judging it. That was, however, precisely the reason why I posted that Zelda Rev mock-up.

Also, you can´t possibly expect Seriousgamer as a reliable source. He´s been proven fake so many times, he forged so many clues so clumsily it hurts to think about it and he even came out a s a fake twice! And still he keeps posting. And still people believe him. Please, don´t be a fool. He´s just a poor imposter and a despearate attention magnet. And that´s being polite. Hope you stick around here and share your views.

seriousgamer is legit. he works in nintendo's marketing department. basically his whole deal is alot of BS mixed in with bits of the truth. he lies on purpose so he looks fake, but sometimes he posts actual real info but nobody takes it seriously because he's 'fake'.

it's his job to just throw out a huge mix of lies and truth so people don't really catch on or dismiss him. but his goal is also to be as outrageous as possible so he gets people to visit his page.

the joke is going to be on everyone who claims he's fake when half the things he says (cause that's his job, half the truth) comes to fruition.

I bet YOU'RE seriousgamer!

Should change your name to seriouselyinneedofalife.

Yeah, I believe serious gamer is just one piece of a big puzzle. I believe the visor, the haptic controller, the multiplayer, the NEC-developed nanotransistors which will greatly reduce the size and heat of the system (IBM, ATi, Mosys, etc. all worked together to develope the "blueprints" for the hardware - NEC then applies its nanotech to shrink the size of the hardware and manufacture), that the revolution is more powerful than the 360 and Ps3 combined. I believe all of it. Nintendo is keeping quiet so that they can suprise their competitors and their fans/ex-fans.

I believe that the other blogs/sites and maybe this one are in cooperation with serious gamer. He mentions that he will reveal new info but he never does, but every time this happens we get something new from another site. The only way to keep up with the new info is to continually check up on all the sites. Just because he says he will reveal info doesn't mean that it will be on his site.

Imagine graphics of this caliber in real-time, fully immersed in a visor and controller that tracks body movements in real-time, and in true stereoscopic 3D - "WOW!"

Anonymous said...

That and only that will make me say "WOW!" That and only that will make the World say, "WOW!"

Anonymous said...

I don't even question it any longer - I just dream about what it will be like.

when i said seriousgamer is legit, i don't mean everything he says is real. i really don't think the rev will be more powerful than both those other systems. but i know he works in nintendo's marketing department and he's telling the truth when he says that NEC is the wildcard in all of this.

remember when it was leaked years back that Nintendo was going to have NEC make the main chip for the Revolution but everyone denied it and Nintendo ended up back at IBM?

if you remember IBM commenting on Nintendo, they said that the other console makers had ideas of joint research and floating point power.. where as Nintendo wanted very specific things done. when seriousgamer claims that there is some kind of chip collaberation between NEC and IBM you fools had better believe him.

I still believe in sereousgamer007 because nothing has proved him actually false in my eyes. Nintendo could have very easily faked the post on the nintendo boards. I also notice that the post doesn't match his writing style. All just part of the ngame I guess.

Anonymous said...

Also the article on the IBM website claims the Revolution's chip is a "super-chip" - as pointed out by serious gamer. Whether it is becuase of NEC's nanotech or becuase it is a fully programable processor or both - it is still called a super chip.

Let us say for arguments sake that the Rev Processor is a "super chip" and that rev has it's own PPU and a customized Dual core ATi R520. Could it produce enviroments like those in these pictures in real time and in Stereoscopic 3D? That is the question. These pictures might be closer to Rev than you think.

Goddamn, retards like all of you buying into this "N-Game" bullshit just make me hope and pray for another industry crash so we can get rid of the idiotic dead weight like you lot and gaming can be retaken by those who actually have half a brain. Now go beat off to some more cartoon porn and leave us the hell alone.

Anonymous (The one who mentioned "super-chips"), that interview was from 2002. My guess is that "super-chips" was an overstatment, used in refering to the PS2 and GCN.

Anyway, about the pictures, to me they look hand-drawn. They really don't look like typical videogame CG. And while all are in a similar style, they really don't tie together with similar locations or characters. They really look like art, not something from a video game, and that is what they originally were. It's hard to explain. They just look 2D, I guess, like someone scanned them off a piece of paper.

googleplexer said...

To expand on what I said, they look like illustrations from a sci-fi book, rather than anything from a videogame.

I don't think so.;)

I think so too. ;-)

But better than most of the
other silly fakes, cause it`s
a bit mysterious. :-)

Benihana said...

Hehe, I tried to comment his posting, but only bloggers are allowed to do that. ^^
I wanted to write that:

We'll not believe you, if you talk about the video?
Try it. Try to make anyone believe.

'Cause I don't do it.
But you can change it with a description of the video.
With all details.

Please ;-)

You're correct, the pictures are not in-game pics - no shit! They aren't supposed to be. They are representations of what the graphics and Xenias will be like. I have said this a million times. We all know that they are not from an actual game. Everyone has been missing the point when it comes to the pics and prototypes that we have seen - they are intended to give us an idea of what the Rev is like without officially revealing anything.

The article was not refering to the Gamecube and PS2 processor - why would they be called "superchips"?

Wow, pretty hefty discussion going on here. Well, about Seriousgamer: This is the guy who simply pasted sentences into Nintendo financial reports and expected people not to notice. So I don´t think it´s appropriate calling people who think he´s fake fools.

In fact, to think that Nintendo would endorse an in-house viral marketing campaign that consists of manipulation, outright lies and spelling mistakes is foolish. If he was actually working for Nintendo, he would operate more subtle. He could tease us with intriguing content. Instead, he has chosen to hype up his comments by ridiculous claims and esoteric mumbo-jumbo. There is nothing about him or his posts that spells professional marketing.

About the N5 pics: I am sure they are fake. Not only do they look amateurish, but N5 was never a codename for the Rev (as some people believe). The name was made-up by fans, I think. And I don´t think Nintendo would opt for something as subdued as N5, anyway.
