PS3 didn´t arrive at destination

It seems like a contradiction in terms, but the PlayStation3 was nowhere to be seen at the ´Destination PlayStation´ event. The event in Miami was solely for retailers. All attendees had to sign non-disclosure agreements, yet it has become clear that the PS3 was a no-show. Here´s commentary from three news sites:

Gamespot:
It now appears that Sony is holding off showing off the PS3 until the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo--aka E3--in May. A source familiar with Sony's strategy confirmed the move on condition of anonymity. "Retailers talk too much," the source said. "They decided to keep it under wraps until E3." That bit of information casts some doubt over exactly what will be shown during Sony Computer Entertainment executive Phil Harrison's keynote address at GDC 2006, which is titled "PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box."

Joystiq:
This could be interpreted as another data point supporting the theory that the PS3's launch schedule has slipped. Or it could just be all part of a master plan to catch the world by surprise with a surprise unveiling. Either way, our impatience grows.

SPOnG
Although not a massive surprise, attendees, all of whom were bound with promisingly tight non disclosure agreements, expressed disappointment en masse at the information blackout.
“It was hinted that we should attend to see 'something special'” one executive at a major US retailer told SPOnG today, “and everyone expected to see at least something [of PlayStation 3] over the three days. Like, videos or something... Anything... Even the most senior in attendance were kept in the dark.”

In a statement, Sony has defended its decision, saying a PS3 showing was never planned. The above quote does suggest otherwise, however. At any rate, Sony has always been good at hyping the press about secret unveilings which turned out to be plain irrelevant.

I hope they're not stalling and delaying so they can imitate the Revmote technology for the Ps3.

There is a rumour doing the rounds that a new modified Ps3 "boomerang" controller will be unveiled at E3 2006 with "motion sensing" (in conjunction with eyetoy) and slightly shorter handles.

i have the same fear
i believe that sony is triyng to copy nintendo's ideas... and the fact that ninty is showing nothing other than the revmote it's probably correlated to this...

Anonymous said...

well, when nintendo acts smart, they still have a secret that they haven´t shown yet and that is connected to the ontroller. so when sony copys it, they only have 50% of the revolution. and don´t forget that nintendo surely has a few patents that will make it hard to copy the controller. and if they are able to do it, i´m sure it won´t be as accurate as the revmote. remeber how long nintendo had to work on such a device? i think sony can´t copy it perfectly in a short amount of time!

I know exactly what Sony is doing and it has nothing to do with Nintendo's controller. They're trying to build up as much hype as they can before E3, to cast a shadw over Revolution's own burgeoning hype.

Basically, Sony knows that at this rate, Nintendo could own E3 this year. To counter this, they're taking a page of Nintendo's book by creating a news blackout. It's their hope that this will smother Nintendo's chances of creating further at and after E3.

That's my thoughts on their strategy, anyway. Of course, it could be that there's simply nothing to show because the system is so far behind. Who knows what's going on. SOmething seems fishy.

I guess, that Zelda will hit the Revolution Showfloor - EXCLUSIVE -

Why is there nothing new to report about? And before everyone says "but nintendo promised..." Nintendo is a company! It's not about promising something to their fans - they look for money and profit just like every other company too! And releasing the highly anticipated Twilight Princess for Nintendo's Cube is a bad choice! Even though i really would like to play it on GCN!

Hi IALS.

Falafelkid I have proven it numerious times and I prove it again.

Sorry, but you have not proven anything of the sort, not even once. It´s a theory of yours and you are wrong.

Miyamoto and others have said numerous times that there is another secret. I have been told separately and I know it´s going to be bigger than the controller.

Anonymous said...

Im surprised by the delay only if Id think they would be more concerned with the 360 than the Revolution. And the the window for a suprise launch is slowly but surely closing. Especialy if the price is as high as hinted.

Does anyone know why we haven't seen a patent for the Revmote controller? Maybe Nintendo is keeping it a "trade secret" so that the details of how it works aren't published (remember that we really have no idea how it works so accurately).

Another option would be that there's some additional secret function of the controller itself that they want to delay revealing. E.g. if the Revmote had something internal to let you "feel" the game like force-feedback

http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NEWS_EN/20050413/103707/?ST=english

it'd be to Nintendo's advantage to keep it quiet while Sony are distracted replicating the 3D pointing powers of the Revmote with their EyeToy.

If not, where's the Revmote patent???

Pakl

Anonymous said...

Patents can be kept out of light for 14 months, and even then , they can re-apply to make it even longer, I think. If they were smart they would do that until release.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous -- I thought that as soon as a patent had been granted, it is immediately publically visible. Is that not correct?

But I do see something about a "disclosure document"... and I see this paragraph:

Inventors are also reminded that any public use or sale in the United States or publication of the invention anywhere in the world more than one year prior to the filing of a patent application on that invention will prohibit the granting of a U. S. patent on it. Foreign patent laws in this regard may be much more restrictive than U.S. laws.

So as long as the Revmote has not been publically demonstrated here in the US, this disclosure document seems to be a way to afford some protection..... hmmm.... maybe this is what you're talking about?

Pakl

Anonymous said...

(actually, there has been no public display of the controller function anywhere else in the world either -- so they should still be protected... the controller has only been demonstrated to small groups of reporters...)

Sony have created a monster of a console and bet the house on it. I think they are afraid to reveal anything until they know the full details of the Nintendo Revolution so they are not caught with their pants down.
If the Revolution does to PS3 the same thing the Ipod did to the Walkman they are in deep trouble. If the PS3 doesn't take off blu ray won't have the advantage over HD-DVD they hoped and it will also hurt Cell's future.

You suggest that the key to victory, for Sony, is complacency. No corporation functions that way--the guys on top must always be watching what the "little guys" are doing because they are historically the trendsetters.

Where would the industry, and even the Game Boy brand, be without a guy named Alexey Pazhitnov? What would the current landscape look like had a group of unknowns not gathered together in a garage to create Wolfenstein 3D and Doom? Would there even be an "X-Box"?

I know the drill by now: Sony will announce Revolution-like functions for its controller and every developer will immediately be on board, which will be baffling considering their previous praising-yet-tentative attitude toward the Revolution.

But by then, everything Iwata has said over the years will be validated--Sony, and later Microsoft, will have compromised its vision, and Nintendo's controller will have become the standard via the so-called "market leader."

It's a win-win scenario.

Nintendo also have been copied on their controller the last 2 generations and this being the most innovative and revolutionary one I dont think they showed the media and competitors the product without knowing what they were doing.

And competitors know more about what their competitors are doing more than you think. Step in the world of big business and you'll soon realise what goes on.

I wouldn´t be so sure. In fact, I would be very surprised if Sony knew what Nintendo was up to and vice versa. In other industries, yes. But not this one.

Sega new about the Revmote technology Nintendo was developing when it was originally planned for the Gamecube. When they had the Dreamcast on the market by itself and were asked which upcoming competitor they most feared (Gamecube (Project Dolphin), PS2 or Xbox) they said Project Dolphin's motion-detecting controllers is the most intriguing. This was before the Gamecube was released so yes Falafelkid, it does happen in this industry...unfortunately.

Sorry I don't have a link to the quote but I could probably find it if I could be bothered.

But maybe Nintendo has learnt it's lesson this time round and they shoot suspected spies.

Nintendo and Sony are very tight lipped thats for sure. But there is a lot goes on behind closed doors than what the public knows about.

The gaming industry is not the only industry Fal that means a lot of money and secrets held. You cant single it out.

Falafelkid said...

Well, you can and you can´t. It´s similar to other industries in some ways, but totally unique in others. This is an industry where you have only three companies producing both hardware and content for it, as well as drawing on the same third companies to deliver additional content.

I don´t know any other industry that fits this picture. No other entertainment industry has so few players as the console business. Given the amount of money that is being made, no other business is quite as fierce. So I´d be very surprised if Sony had known anything about the Rev controller before TGS.

Those two things are totally unrelated. I have been told about the Rev´s last secret being bigger than the controller. While I can´t tell you who told me, I have told you already and I have not been given any more details, of course.

Earth to fanboys...

There are no big secrets left guys. I hate to break it to you, but whatever is going to be announced is going to be minor at best. The "Secret" rumors are just to help build hype. Think about it, game developers have development kits for these machines already - upi've likely seen these reviewed on the net (I know I have). The developers have to know about the features of the console so that they can create games to take advantage of those features.

If Sony all the sudden has a motion sensing controller... so what, none of their games were developed to take advantage of that! Why add another feature to your console that is going to increase the cost and provide very little if any improved gameplay? The same applies to any other major feature that would be announced.

If you´re trying to sell a product, there´s only one thing worse than no hype and it´s hype that is disappointed. Nintendo would not hint at another secret if they couldn´t put their money where their mouth is.

The developers have to know about the features of the console so that they can create games to take advantage of those features.

Not true. There are plenty of possible secrets and related technologies that would work with any kind of game, even existing ones.

The "Raid over the River"-developer NIBRIS is in development with another game for Revolution. This Gothic-Horror-Title is called "Sadness".

Sadness is "only for Revolution." First screens of Sadness will apparently be placed on NIBRIS' Website towards the end of April.

Now this would be a cool game for the revolution!

Table Tennis. By Rockstar Games.

Read this article first. http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/693/693369p1.html

now, lets ignore the most important fact that this game is for the 360 and they stated this is exclusive for the 360.

it screams the revmote. the price tag is $39.99. Cheaper than the usual games for the 360.

here's a quote "To us, this is a gameplay model that has not been explored that effectively up to now -- very fast, but very fluid control -- and something we feel will be vital if the new consoles are going to take off, as it is a key area new games should be able to distinguish themselves from current-gen ones. Unless new games try to do something fundamentally beyond the scope of current games at a level beyond merely providing prettier versions of a current-generation game design, consumers will not feel compelled to buy new hardware."

sounds revolution-like.

so maybe Rockstar or another company will make this game for the rev. we'll just have to wait and see. the quickness and intensity of the game sounds cool to me. i dont have a ping pong table, so for $40 i can now play some ping pong.

on the other hand this whole article could spell trouble for the revolution. i mean to me it sounds perfectly suited to the rev, and if they are making it exclusive to the 360, well, that sets off flags in my head and makes me wonder why they are overlooking nintendo.

Truth or just coincidence
http://www.revo-europe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3699&page=3&pp=25
January 13, 2006 he said this;
3) Is there any chance of Skies of Arcadia II or Shenmue III on Rev? ..or what do you know about what Sega is developing that you can share with us?
I don't know much on what Sega is working on but I can say that Sonic will becoming to the Revolution. There is also talk that they are making an unique/different game.
4) Are Resi5 and Sonic coming to Rev?
I'm not sure on what Capcom have in store for the Revolution but I have heard that Capcom has heard Okami talk and has looked into that possibility. Also Shinji Mikami is working on at least one exclusive for the Revolution. As I said, Sonic is coming to the Revolution, whether it's the same title as the 360/PS3 is up in the air. But I have heard of Sega experimenting with using the freehand controller to control the speed and nunchuk joystick for the movement. Don't know how it turned out though.

6 days later ?
http://revolution.ign.com/articles/682/682320p1.html
Sources close to SEGA have told IGN Revolution that the developer is working on a new entry into the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise for Nintendo's next generation console....not be a port of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game tentatively dubbed "Sonic the Hedgehog [next gen]." Instead, say insiders, it is an entirely original effort designed from the ground up to take advantage of Revolution's unique controller.

He also comment on you falafelkid when someone asked about somethings you said:http://www.revo-europe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4778
Posted by Stabby talking to BigTac:
You see, Falafelkid (the German journalist that has a blog) claims to have a very trustworthy source (which he wouldn't reveal) who said the 3rd secret will be bigger than the controller. His source also claimed there would be no news after the controller revealing until 2006, so he has proven himself legit since that was pretty hard to predict.
He's the one that came up with the first comments about the controller (from Molyneux and Yuji Naka) and he has a lot of good contacts. I'm not sure wether or not his source is credible though.

BigTac replied:
Yeah I have heard of him and he is for real so he is very credible. While no developers have told me that the next Revolution feature is bigger than the controller I wouldn't say that it isn't. After all Nintendo revealed the controller way back in September, but have yet to show off any games. So I would think that to some extent they would keep the bigger secrets until the full unveiling. What I can say is that some developers in regaurd to what hasn't been revealed are extremely excited. One lead designer even told me that he is even more excited just to see and hear the first reactions when Nintendo show off the Revolution and people see the games.

Anonymous said...

And apparently he does have some nda's but says he hasn't broken any and has said in the past that at least one inside source at Ubisoft knows that he posts on the revolution-europe forms. And recently acknowledged that he was made aware of some changes made by Ubisoft in regaurds to what was revealed to him in January but BigTac isn't allowed(nda) to say what they told him.

Anonymous said...

Oh I just read this on what he said about the EA demos he saw.
"BigTac;
The demos where built using the Gamecube games but with Revolution control features. They said that they have running playable version of titles on the Revolution hardware. I didn't see any of the games running on Revolution dev kits though."
He also said and confirmed from previous reports that EA is indeed supporting the PS3/360 more right now but said it could change and increase. He has also talked about how some developers have been furstrated that Nintendo hasn't revealed more things publicly on the Revolution so far.

This is something he said on Feb.17. Nothing really related to what IGN aid but here it is anyway.
BigTac - Nothing real new and interesting but here a few things I discovered recently.
One another note from a developers one the Revolution's processing ppower and abilities. While most developers do wish that Nintendo a little more raw power in the Revolution, they are extremly suprised on how well done the cpu and gpu is. Looking at the specs you won't think it's capable of what you will see one the screen. As you know, from all the patents relating to the Revolution from new shadowing techniques, texturing methods, pre-rendering graphics but allowing the game to react and play like it wa rendered full 3d, and apparently some more. These are all things Nintendo has got in order to maximising propressing power by use tecniques that use less power to pull it off. But one at least one developer (without a dev kit yet) talked about the his team concern on how much AI and physics will the Revolution be able to do compare to the competition. Also Nintendo is working on get 3rd party support for classic titles and also discussing possiblilities of adding independent games. They're maybe some truth to rumors circulating that the top rated demo games made by students at DigiPen IoT may make their way on to the download service.

Wait you left this out about the EA demos:

"More on some of the demos I played from EA:
Tiger Woods Revolution: Basically what you would expect from using the freehand controller.
NHL Revolution: This was probally one of the best control methods I tested. Move around using the nunchuk joystick while the freehand controller movement is used like the hockey stick while A and B buttons were used to pass and shoot.
Madden Revolution: They had quitea few different set ups for the Revolution. Nunchuck joystick too move and use the controller to throw the ball(I believe Reggie mention this). I didn't like this too much even thought I think they could improve it. #2 nunchuk joystick to move while you use the freehand controller to move the QB vision. And while running use the freehand controller to pull off moves.#3 Using the classic control. The left analog to move, right analog to use quaterback vision, and use "revmote" for precision passing."

If somebody gets permission to demo these games you bet EA is gonna make you sign a NDA. One does not walk into EA and says "hi I would like to demo some of your revolution demos" and come out to talk about it freely. Another thing all three games are developed by 3 different EA studios from 3 different locations. No stranger is goin allowed access to get to demo their up and coming next gen demos at their HQ. The same situation goes for Ubisoft. Ubisoft is not gonna invite somebody from a forum to come check out their new developing titles. They rather have well known media publications cover that.

Hi Metaldave. Totally agree with you on your thoughts concerning Nintendo´s tactics for E3. Good points.

Hi Blizz419. No, I think I´ll leave those comments. It´s important to see what kind of immature level these guys dwell on. After all, excessive homophobia is only a result of grave insecurities about one´s own sexuality.

Hi Anonym (regarding Big Tac). I try not to comment on these guys too much. But I have only ever thought that one of these guys was potentially a real developer and that was Zauron on the GameFAQs boards. And my main reason for believing that he was real was that he never revealed anything.

This guy seems fake because one of the things he mentioned as a possibility he heard about is well known to me for some time. If he really was a developer, why should I know more than him? Though he should have known about it for certain, he is totally right about that one point. Again, that could have been anyone´s guess, perhaps. But at least most of his claims seem realistic enough. What does make me suspicious is the claim that his contacts at Ubi Soft know about him posting on the net. My best contacts know about my blog, of course. And that is precisely the reason why I cannot post everything they tell me.

I too have been wondering about BigTac.
Alright falafelkid, I sent him a pm with some things.Just to clear it up to you. Here are some things I got from/about him.
BigTac is not a developer. He is working on becoming a Game Designer/Programer though.

BigTac started his work as a freelance journalist/insider shortly after E3 2004. He has attened E3 in 04 and 05. As he stated a month ago(I think) he is unable to attend E3 this year because of prior commitments. Apparently he has a lady in his life.

BigTac said that one source in Ubisoft knows that he posts in the revolution-europe forums. And he doesn't post everything he knows. Apparently BigTac got in a little trouble with Ubisoft but his source contacted him and told him that a few things he said about Ubisoft have changed and is wrong/misinterpreted. He also told me he gotten a nda from EA, Ubisoft, along with some other cources. Apparently his closest contacts come from Ubisoft, EA, NoA.

On the topic on what he said about Sega on Sonic Revolution. Basically he contacted a friend of his that is close with Sega, and asked him about Sonic on Revolution. His source only said that Sonice will be coming to the Revolution, N fans need not worry. And then later revealed that Sega in the beginnning had been experimenting on ways to control Sonic with the Revolutionary control system. Bt his source never stated it as fact on whether the Sonic game will be a Revolutionary port of Soinc(PS3/360) or a new different exclusive title.

I have a few more questions for him waiting to be answered. Also falafelkid, what is the possibility BigTac mentioned that you have know for some time ? I would love to ask him about it. Or could you give me at least what topic he was referring too.

You expect us to believe you contacted bigtac and told you all this? All you did was just looked up all his profile and checked out all his postings. This guy claims to gotten a nda from EA and then talked about all the demos and claim he aint breaking anything from his nda? LMAO. Bigtac hasn't revealed anything hard to predict.

Hey Falafelkid, why not arrange a trip to where everybody in this blog can visit and EA to test out their demos too.

I'm not surprise if this "anonymous" poster is bigtac himself.

Anyways I'm done with this subject because all of Bigtac's bs is just gonna stay on revo-europe.
