European Wii launch: November 27th?

The Wii may launch after the PS3 in Europe. A photo of a banner inside French supermarket chain Auchan notes the launch date as November 27th.

GoNintendo has the scoop.

I would guess that this rumour could well be true. It´s one thing to post tentative launch dates on a website. But before a supermarket chain, comparable in size to Walmart, prints pre-order banners, you make sure that the date is correct.

Also, Nintendo have never really committed to a simultaneous launch, though they have openly thought about it. So a later launch in Europe could still mean that Wii will launch earlier than PS3 in Japan and North America.

EDIT Interestingly enough, Auchan´s Wii pre-order page only mentions that the console will launch at the end of the year.

Hi dsss.

Can you give us some info on those sources you mentioned for the European release?

Also, do you know why pn18 thought it was November 10th? That might just have been a guess, since he posted no more than the date, if I remember correctly.

Again, why would such a big supermarket chain get it wrong on those banners?

Hey Falafelkid! Good news!

According to:
http://www.codenamerevolution.com/?p=1465
IGN's podcast has just corroborated your report of there being a Wii Star Wars lightsaber game in development!

And I quote Codenamerevolution, who are reporting on Wii.ign.com's podcast:

"IGN revealed some new Wii info in the latest podcast, they are the following:

At Leipzig we’ll see games from ‘another system’ shifting to the Wii. 6-8 THQ games are in development for the Wii (and possibly all for launch). Next week THQ is having a Wii-only Event that will show off games like Spongebob. IGN confirms that a Star Wars lightsaber game is in fact in development. Metroid Prime 3 might be delayed and may not ready for launch day (could just be for the launch window). According to IGN it looks like there will be no Dragon Quest at launch. Also IGN confirms that Excite Truck is a launch game."

Here's the link to IGN's podcast:

Oh happy day!

If this French chain is as big as Wal-Mart, then there's a good chance they're as retarded as some of the big American chains. Like Target, who for the longest time listed the DS as the "GBA DS" on their website and had a discount coupon in one of their Sunday ads for "Metroids DS". I wouldn't take this with a 20-and-a-half foot grain of salt.

I have destroyed you, your overconfidence and everything you stand for with a little bit of humor and an ill video.

I know you know that 99% of what I said is true you just dont come to terms with it and cant acknowledge it because you fall for Nintendo.

The truth hurts Falafelkid.
You aint pulling a fast one on me.
Its was crystal clear ever since you first started this blog, ever since you came up with your hilarious overenthusiastic theories
,pink video confessions, and Nintendo defending comments that you are a biased fanatic fanboy and hopelessly commited or should I say addicted coeval.
I can see behind your curtain.
I know what lurs beneath your hard- -straight-wannabe- proffessional- journalist- shell- facade that is to say a soft snuggling Peter Pan who doesn't want to grow up and experience Grand Turismo.
Its obvious that you like to entrench yourself in your cute Pikachu world and seclude yourself of the truth.
Its also obvious that you took great pains and time to respond to my arguments.
That alone speaks volumes about how much the truth really hurts you.
You are trying too hard I'm afraid to say.
Why should I repeat my self thousand times?
All the arguments that Ciosc and IALS brought up speak for themselve.
All you were able to accomplish was merly picking on tiny details that you either misunderstood like "Nintendo Japan published" or that I mistyped for some reason!
End of debate.
Falafelkid I would like to continue the tradition :

Gegen mich und den Cioscmän bist du nichts als ein Tropfen auf dem heissen Stein und..!..:) sowas wie dich rauch ich doch abermals in der Pfeife.

Look Falafelkid,
I have played more Nintendo games
than you ever will,I have beaten more Zelda,Mario,Metroid bosses than 90% of the people that come and visit this spot!

What do you want to tell me ?
Do you think I hate Nintendo?
Do you think I want them to loose?
NO!
Everything I ever said regarding Nintendo was meant to wake them up out of their brainwashed state!

I take a look at my life and pace trails from Nintendo to Sony to Micro.
Industry topics and views generally concerend about AND with different ways to coincide earned clout!

I want Nintendo to succeed !I grew up with Nintendo!
We did everything together!
Brain Age is a step in the right direction.Just as old school mario bros. is a great revival!
You know, you always accuse me of pulling heat over nothing but.....
see all I'm really trying to do is making people aware of the problems that surround Nintendo and which prevented them from claiming the throne ever since Sony entered the market!
You simply have to acknowladge that Sony hit the nail on the head in the home console sector with PS1 and PS2!
Sony will unquestionably have lots of hurdles to overcome with PS3..
Whatever you know! Its not about Sony!Again, its just about making Nintendo aware of their problems! What is wrong with that?Nintendo needs to get their act together if they want to compete againv and therefore they need to cover all genres and tastes and find a better balance between there styles.
They are too similiar and too sequelized I'm afraid.
Nintendo needs to take a leaf out of Sonys book cause they pulled it off in the home console sector. And thats exactly what Microsoft is doing by all means neccessary.
Matter of fact is Sony has been number 1 for two generations and deservedly so.Accept that.

oh and a quick question...

can we expect to see something from wii at rtl2 news?

Falafelkid said...

Okay, IALS. You finally sound somewhat reasonable (though your interpretation of why I take the time to respond to people is laughable - think again, there is another possible reason much closer to home).

Noone here has ever denied that Sony has been market leader in the home console business - and deservedly so, of course. Last Christmas, the PS2´s slim incarnation at a very reasonable pricepoint combined with a fantastic software offering of Eye Toy, Singstar and Buzz - and made that package the top seller in its category. I don´t think Sony ever sold as many PS2 consoles as they did last holiday season. Again, noone has ever denied that.

At the same time, it´s obvious you never really read our lenghty replies to your trolling, which is precisely what you were doing. So let´s just leave it at that, okay?

Falafelkid said...

Hi Coldblooder

can we expect to see something from wii at rtl2 news?

Yes. I will file reports on both Wednesday, 23rd, and Thursday, 24th of August.

The first one should feature David Reeves, CEO of SCEE, an equally high-ranking Nintendo exec (yet to be named) and possibly Sid Meier, Creative Director at Firaxis.

The second should feature Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubi Soft, and Gabe Newell, Managing Director of Valve Software.

i don´t know what kind of weird stuff he (or maybe she???) wrote...

Who knows? And who cares? IALS could be living in or near Ismaningen in Bavaria for all I care.

Anonymous said...

Sorry Falafelkid but pretending that all I did was trolling again is almost like you pretending that your hilarious "Why 3D projection makes sense" theory comes true I'm afraid to say.

Also regarding Gran Turismo.
Come on you cant be so naive to take it literally when I say Gran Turismo is mature.
Gran Turismo APPEALS to mature audiences principally because it is an accurate expression of real life cars and driving.
You know just as good as I do that simulations generally appeal to older audiences.
We need to stop being at cross-purposes please!
Thanx for your attention

Now, here is truly bizarre news, courtesy of Joystiq.

Dana Jongewaard, editor of Official PlayStation Magazine, won´t be getting a PS3 because it´s too expensive, she says on her 1UP blog. Instead, she´ll be buying an Xbox360. Here´s what she says:

When I know that a console's direct competitors cost two-thirds or half of that price, it becomes harder for me to justify shelling out that kind of money. $600 might be worth it if there were several huge titles on the near horizon that were PS3-exclusive. But for the first year at least, there are very few big titles that are PS3 exclusive. GTA4 and Assassins will be available for the 360 at the same time.

The other big reason for people to shell out $600, BluRay, is frankly something I don't care about. So ultimately, I can't justify it. $600 is a lot of money, especially when I can get what -- for me at least -- will be a very similar experience for $400. I would like to own a PS3, and I hope that the price drops soon so I can consider it.

This is, of course, just one editor, so the story does not merit its own post. Yet it is truly bizarre, nevertheless.

Anonymous said...

hi falafelkid:

hehe good one, but very harsh if you ask me ;-)

and about that ps3 editor:

she hits the nail right on the spot. if you don´t care about blu ray you really don´t neet a ps3 anytome soon because you can get the same titles on the ps3. if you really are a tech freak and can´t wait to get your hands on blu ray, than the ps3 may be a good choice. but theres one thing that might happen to sony. the ps3 is a very very complex machine. the more complex the machine is, the higher is the risk that faulty machines make it to the store shelf. sony NEEDS a good quality check. you see what happent to a lot of 360s, and that machine is not as complicated as the ps3... and microsoft is a company that usally sells high quality hardware.

Yeah, true. But it´s just a movie quote (with a minor alternation).

and about that ps3 editor: she hits the nail right on the spot

I think so too. I wouldn´t buy that beast of a console either. Though I am genuinely excited for titles like Prey and the next-gen Eye Toy.

Hi Coldblooder.

Actually, until I got the job as games editor six years ago, I was a PC gamer only. And I was, simply because I thought consoles cost too much. Now, I´m much more of a console gamer, having the freedom of choice (for free). My favourite current-gen console is GameCube with the PS2 a close second, but I wouldn´t have bought either, had I not started at RTL 2. So I still remember vividly how non-console-gamers view consoles. Whether Wii really can convince non-gamers and PC-gamers like I used to be remains to be seen. But I think it´s a likely outcome, at least to an extent.

i am desperatly looking for a job or a "ausbildungsplatz" (whats that in english?)...

That´s an apprencticeship.

this time sony dosen´t get the victory served on a silver plate like this gen.

Well, you are right about Sony having it easy this generation. But don´t think that this just fell into Sony´s lap. They made some very important decisions when they designed the console at the drawing board, the most important one being the inclusion of a DVD player.

Back then, everyone saw the technology´s advantages, understood that it would eventually become the standard - and so everyone wanted one. When the PS2 finally came out, it had a pretty weak launch line-up (Tekken Tag Tournament, Fantavision, Street Fighter Ex 3 and Ridge Racer V), but it sold on being the cheapest DVD player around alone - with a gaming console to boot.

Apparently, at the Japanese launch, the disc that was sold most alongside the console wasn´t even a game, it was The Matrix on DVD. If true, this illustrates well just how clever Sony were to include that functionality.

Once the console was out, they could all lean back and enjoy the great third party support they have had. It was only halfway through the console´s lifetime that Sony really pushed some innovative content like SingStar, Buzz and Exe Toy - and, incidentally, all those great innovative titles came out of SCE Europe.
