Nintendo 3DS details, PSP2 details next week

The Nintendo 3DS will launch in North America on March 27th for $249 and in Europe on March 25th for an expected price of €249/£249 or below. This is in line with expectations (see post below). However, no fixed price was issued for the European market. Nintendo is leaving it up to retail to set individual prices. To my knowledge, this is the first time Nintendo is not naming a price alongside a console's launch date. When the Wii was announced for Europe, the price was fixed and communicated. While most European outlets fall in line by pricing the 3DS at around 250 in either currency, UK retailers range from below £200 to a staggering £300.

While no further deals with major Hollywood Studios have been announced (above and beyond the three already committed to the system), Nintendo is partnering with sports broadcasters Sky and Eurosport in Europe while no such partnerships have been announced for North America. Not yet, anyway.

Only next week, Sony will reveal its PSP2 handheld, the successor to the PlayStation Portable, it is believed. While we know most things about the PSP2's sibling, the PlayStation Phone, already (without it being officially announced), the PSP2's features are still largely unknown. It is rumoured to be the handheld equivalent of the PS3.

And there may be unexpected competition in the form of an Apple product. The company is said to be considering 3D for its new iPod Touch. While Apple identifies its place in gaming as a "subset of casual games", such devices would compete directly in terms of other content.

EDIT The first substantial details regarding the PSP2 have emerged from a Japanese newspaper through Andriasang and via Engadget and Joystiq. According to the source, the device will feature an OLED screen, by far the best, albeit most expensive screen technology currently available. The report goes on to state that the console will be able to connect to 3G networks, which might facilitate online multiplayer and access to downloads practically anywhere. Apparently, the PSP2 will not be able to place calls, though. Details of a PSP phone have already been leaked.

I'm looking forward to the psp2.

Anon, what is your problem with sony? A lot of people enjoy playing other platforms and *gasp* a lot of people own more than one console and more than one handheld. The psp is far from being a failure. Piracy severly hurt software sales but the psp has a great library and great games are still being released for it.

jerry said...

Also, the majority of the previews for the 3ds have people saying that the 3D is the weakest part of the system. All the games will be playable without 3D so don't expect games to require 3D to be on in order to play it. You know what some people would call that?

A gimmick.

Will the 3D look cool, probably. Am I going to buy one to play games in 3D, no. I couldn't care less about gaming in 3D, especially on a handheld. I'm excited for the 3DS because it's nintendo's new handheld.

As for dual analog and 3g on the psp2, those are features that will make games PLAY better, not look better.

Because you know, it's not about graphics right? It's about gameplay. Isn't that what the nintendo fanboys have been clinging to this entire generation.

Hypocrites.

Hi Jerry.

First of all, thanks for your comments. I too am very much looking forward to next two Sony handhelds. The PSP Phone might become a must-by fo me, depending on pricing. I would like to comment on another point of yours, though.

The majority of the previews for the 3ds have people saying that the 3D is the weakest part of the system.

I believe you are way off here. Certainly after E3, all media outlets had nothing but praise for the device's 3D functionality. If you do know other reviews, please post some links. I am unaware of any such criticism - and after two extensive hands-on sessions, I must say that such criticism would be totally undeserved.

jerry said...

Falafelkid,

The 'weekend confirmed' podcast from shacknews.com has commented that the 3D works great but they preferred playing it with the 3D turned off. IGN has mentioned it as well in a few of their podcasts and the 'Gamers with Jobs' & 'GiantBomb' podcast have commented on it as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the 3D will work and look neat, but if it's optional from the start I don't expect it to bring much to the table besides "WOW" factor. I'm sure Suda51 or Shinji Mikami could add something really clever but I'm predicting that the majority of the games will be pretty forgettable as far as 3D goes.

For me, like I mentioned above. I'm excited for the 3DS solely because it's nintendo's new handheld. The thing is gonna be a beast.

I wonder why, if the rumour is true, Sony keep putting the latest and therefore most expensive hardware in there consoles. OLED screen maybe is the wow-factor that there "psp2" need.

Looking forward to see both the 3DS-screen and the new psp's (maybe one with a phone, one without?)

il take 3D over HD as HD is mesningless on small screen and 3D no glasses is NEXT GEN any system released now without it is OBSOLETE so psp 2 is way behind before it begins...

il take a second screen being a tactile touchscreen over a dumb second analog stick

il take 3D camera over 2D any day of the week and il take near 100% backward compatabillity over non as psp2 likely has no disc drive if it does its a global joke handhelds dont use disks anymore....

3DS OFFERS NEW/NEXT GEN AND TRULLY NEXT GEN 3D

PSP2 OFFERS A PSP HD CAN THE POINT TO THIS BE EXPLAINED AS I DO-NOT GET IT

"3D WEAK = ANTI 3DS REPORTING

No one was saying that though.

I can't directly quote anyone but it was basically the same feelings I have. 3D is neat, but I don't care about 3D in games, on handhelds or consoles. I'm excited about the 3DS because it's nintendos new handheld and it looks awesome. I haven't read any bad remarks about the 3DS, everyone knows it's going to be incredible. It's just that some people don't really care for the 3D or see it as necessary.

Go there and listen to their most recent podcast (25Jan2011) and fast forward to 57:51.

One of the guys was at the 3DS event in New York last week and talks about his views on the 3D function within the 3DS.

Anon, before you go ranting about how giantbomb is probably some blog by a kid is his basement, Giantbomb is a great website. It was started by Jeff Gerstmann and other members of gamespot after Jeff was fired over his review of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men.

I get a feeling that someone here, not mentioning any names (because I don't know it ;) ) is trying to agitate some kind of non-existing debate between why we knock down 3DS and why we hype PSP2 when non of us here actually do that.

There is more to screens than 3D and HD, therefore I'm interested in a OLED screen, becouse of the great colours and deep blacks it can show, that deepens the immersion (much like 3D except it´s flat 2D.)

jerry said...

Exactly, that's the problem with alot of nintendo purists, especially Anon. They have this idea that nintendo is the greatest and everything else is a copy and or trash. Yes nintendo is by the far the best when it comes to innovation but there's nothing wrong with enjoying multiple gaming platforms. I'll take my ps3 anyday over the wii but I would also take an SNES over my PS3. I love gaming on multiple consoles/handhelds, it's the only way to fully experience gaming at its best. I'd like to point out too that I was a nintendo only gamer for years. I prefered the SNES over the Genesis, the N64 over the PSX and the Gamecube over the PS2. It wasn't until the wii came out and motion controls that I realized that the majority of the games I wanted to play were on other platforms. Now I own all current gen consoles as well as a ps2, xbox and sega saturn and I couldn't be happier.

jerry said...

Good lord Anon, are you really that thick headed or just a troll?

The NGP is going to be a fantastic device, just like the 3DS will be a fantastic device.

Even if the NGP had a 3D screen like the 3DS, you would be on here screaming that Sony copies everything Nintendo does. The touch screen mechanics look good and will work well for Iphone centric games. The uncharted demo that showed the guy swiping his finger, that stuff is optional. If you don't want to do that you can just press a button. As for stylus controls and input lag. How is that even an issue? It's never been an issue ever in console/handheld games because the developers put things in place to avoid that. It's not like it's lag generated by framerate, which in the case of the 3DS, the 3D affects the framerate of the games. Anyways, some people PREFER dual analog controls or touchscreen controls. Also, dual analog is great for camera control.

Also, why do you hate Sony so much? You realize that Nintendo had a huge hand in making the Playstation brand what it is, right? If they hadn't stabbed sony in the back and sided with Philips, gaming as we know it would be very different. Instead though, Kutaragi took that frustration and formed one of the best consoles in gaming history. Nintendo on the other hand rested on their laurels thanks to Yamauchi and it ultimately cost them 2 generations. Sony did the same thing with the PS3. The 2 companies histories are quite similar. You need to go do some research.

jerry said...

Oh and, the same thing will eventually happen with microsoft. Their first party studios are leaving left and right. They pour all their money into 3rd party exclusives/timed exclusives and now they're focusing all their effort on getting the wii audience with Kinect. 2011 is huge for nintendo, the 3DS is launching and I'm sure they have some big unannounced titles for the wii and Sony has the NGP and an insane amount of AAA exclusives coming out. What microsoft is doing is going to hurt them in the long run.

everytime i think of COD/MOSTER HUNTER/RTS/FPS/TOP DOWN ETC its 3DS that has the fly controls and 3D were as psp2 has rubbish controls and 2D

and it arrives 1 year after 3DS and 7 years after DS and still SONY DONT GET IT

"Or you could keep your original PSP and play all the UMD games you want."

What does that have to do with Sony claiming PSP2 is "backwards compatible?" Backwards compatibility is a lie. Sony has just rendered all UMD games out there worthless.

"Umm, how about the 3DS having gameboy games on their store? Is that outrageous? Or the wii having the virtual console? Is that outrageous. I've probably bought Super Mario 3, 10 or so times in my life."

That's not even the same thing and you know it. When people hear "backwards compatibility" they think "This unit will be able to play PSP games I own." But it won't. If I buy a UMD game after PSP2 comes out, I may as well have bought a brick.

jerry said...

Just because a new console/handheld comes out, it doesn't mean you have to trade in or throw away your old one. How stupid can you be.

Backwards compatibility, if it plays PSP games then yes, it's backwards compatible. The NGP has software/hardware in it that allows PSP games to run. Also, who the hell buys a new console to play old games? I've downloaded lots of PSP games off the PSN and if I'm able to download them onto the NGP, that will be a plus. I'm not buying an NGP to play PSP games though. That's like buying a wii to play gcn games or getting a 360 to play xbox games.

Find something else to whine about.

Also, how about backwards compatibility with the DSi and the DS games that require the gba slot??? Nintendo fanboys always manage to forget these things, hypocrite.

Anonymous said...

"Just because a new console/handheld comes out, it doesn't mean you have to trade in or throw away your old one. How stupid can you be."

No, but it does mean if I want to play a classic PSP game on the road, I'll have to carry around two handhelds. Also, some people were counting on using their trade-in as credit towards getting an NGP. Now... unless they own the wildly unpopular PSPGo, they'll be forced to keep their old ones just so they can play their old games. OR have to pay more money for games they already own. They fact that you can't see this as a problem for fans or regular consumers, yet want to call me stupid shows a little bit about your mindset.

"Backwards compatibility, if it plays PSP games then yes, it's backwards compatible. The NGP has software/hardware in it that allows PSP games to run."

This is one of those things that's technically correct, but is clearly missing the problem everybody has. Yes, it can run PSP games... that you have to buy again. Anybody with a collection of UMDs, like say, some of Sony's biggest fans who bought the hell out of them since 2005, is left in the cold. This is precisely why the PSPGo failed. Obviously the NGP will be getting new games, but BC allows early adopters to still purchase recently released and even newly released games after the release of the new handheld, and not have to juggle two handhelds. BC is meant to make a smooth transition between platforms and allow a content buffer and pressure release for the developers and platform manufacturers. The fact that the NGP drops the ball on this means people... not just people, Sony's biggest PSP fans, will be hesitant to purchase one. It also means PSP UMD sales will drop like a rock, as BC also allows for a couple of extra years of old platform commerce.

"I've downloaded lots of PSP games off the PSN and if I'm able to download them onto the NGP, that will be a plus."

Bully for you. Most PSP fans bought UMDs. They are the ones getting fucked.

"I'm not buying an NGP to play PSP games though."

Probably not, but it is one feature the 3DS has over the NGP. Instant access to all your games, some of which may be your favorites. No need to flush them all down the toilet and buy digital copies. (Also, The fact that Sony is offering digital downloads means the trade-in value for old UMDs is now down the toilet, if one were to consider trading them in to replenish their old libraries)

Even worse some PSP games aren't offered on PSN. So really it's "backwards compatibility with all games we deign to put on PSN. Hope you didn't want to play Lumines!"

"I'm not buying an NGP to play PSP games though. That's like buying a wii to play gcn games or getting a 360 to play xbox games."

No, it's like being a Sony fan and getting kicked in the balls by Sony for being a Sony fan. I know the PSP library isn't filled with unforgettable classics, but some people like the games and would like to play them on the new portable without having to re-buy them. A good BC feature would allow that, but the NGP doesn't have one.

"Also, how about backwards compatibility with the DSi and the DS games that require the gba slot??? Nintendo fanboys always manage to forget these things, hypocrite."

The DSi was introduced in 2009. FIVE YEARS after the DS was released and 3 years after the DS Lite was released. Both had GBA BC AND the DS Lite isn't even a discontinued model. IF you want GBA BC, you can get it. And you don't have to re-buy all your old GBA games in digital format to boot. This is a lousy comparison and you know it.

jerry said...

What nintendo did with the DSi is called, "dividing the userbase" and that's much worse than not having a UMB slot in a system whose main function is to play new games, not years old psp games.

As for the people that were planning on trading in their psp for credit. They would get maybe 50 dollars at best. So that point is moot at best.

All your doing is throwing stuff to the wall and hoping it sticks. If you don't want the ngp, don't buy it. If you wanna play psp games, keep your psp. It's as simple as that.

I have a gameboy so I can play gameboy games, when the DS was announced I didn't throw a tantrum because it wasn't game boy compatible like the GBA was.

Anonymous said...

"What nintendo did with the DSi is called, "dividing the userbase" and that's much worse than not having a UMB slot in a system whose main function is to play new games, not years old psp games."

How did it divide the userbase? Could the DSi NOT play DS games? Was there some kind of spec difference that manifest itself in the games? No. DSi just had DSiWare and a few extra gadgets. Nintendo didn't "move on" from DSLite either, as all models except the original are still in production (maybe not for long).

And no, it's not much worse than not having legitimate BC for playing UMD games. You still don't get the frustration longtime Sony fans have with this horrid implementation of BC that essentially requires them to re-buy games they already own. That is inexcusable, period.

"As for the people that were planning on trading in their psp for credit. They would get maybe 50 dollars at best. So that point is moot at best."

Not sure what your point here is. NGP will be expensive, so $50 won't help much? PSP sucks? PSP rocked until NGP was announced and now it and UMD suck and are worthless?

"All your doing is throwing stuff to the wall and hoping it sticks."

LOL Like DSi "splitting the userbase" wasn't some kind of stretch?

"If you don't want the ngp, don't buy it. If you wanna play psp games, keep your psp. It's as simple as that."

I'd rather Sony catch up to Nintendo in 2001 when the GBA allowed people to play GB and GBC games straight out of the box. Or hell they should catch up with THEMSELVES in 2001 when they had True BC on PS2. How come Sony keeps fucking up like with the PS3 drama and now NGP?

Also, I can't carry around two handhelds, especially since NGP is such a beast. Keeping a PSP is an option only for those who want to continue playing their classic PSP games and NOT upgrade to the NGP until a massive price drop.

"I have a gameboy so I can play gameboy games, when the DS was announced I didn't throw a tantrum because it wasn't game boy compatible like the GBA was."

I still think you are misunderstanding the issue. BC is a great feature for various reasons, including allowing developers to have a few years of the old platforms market, keeping a smooth transition of product for retailers, and keeping pressure off developers and content providers.

You example of DS not playing original GB games is a reach. Nobody expected the DS to, as the last GBC game had been released some 3 years prior to the DS's release. Likewise 3DS, as this new iteration releases some 5 years after the last GBA game was officially released.

Backwards compatibility is a feature that the 3DS has and the NGP effectively doesn't, aside from weasel-worded "compatibility" with PSP games (that you have to re-buy on PSN)

And to end, just to explain one more time what the problem is... Sony claims NGP has PSP BC. But this is only for digitally downloaded PSP games, despite the majority of them having been bought on UMD. This leave PSP fans out in the cold because to use this feature they would have to buy PSP games on PSN, even ones that they already own, and having some games simply not be on the network like Lumines or Kingdom Hearts. Considering Nitnendo offers effortless BC, it is inexcusable that Sony dropped the ball on this. Period.
