Sony cans 20GB PS3

Sony has decided to pull the 20GB model, the cheaper of its two PS3 stock keeping units (SKU) from stores. This leaves the 60GB model as its one remaining SKU in North America, Joystiq quotes Dave Karraker, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at Sony Computer Entertainment America.

At launch, we offered two separate models of PlayStation 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base. Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of ninety percent in favor of the 60GB SKU, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly.

Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America. In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in Wi-Fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model.

The report does not specify whether the decision will affect the other territories as well. I regard this as highly likely, though.

This isn't exactly NEWS, per se. The 20 gb model has basically been a no show since launch, correct? If I remember correctly, they haven't even been building that model anymore. This is really just Sony making it official.

This is true; they stopped manufacturing the 20GB console at the end of December/early January. In my opinion Sony should have made the PS3 a single tier console from the beginning. Also Sony will not include the emotion engine in the PS3 for all territories (namely North America and Japan considering they were the only PS3 units that included it). Now all Sony needs to do is switch to 65nm processors and they may reduce the manufacturing cost enough to actually turn a profit or at least drop the retail price a little.

I doubt Sony will be reducing the price any time soon. The PS3 has pretty much bled money since its initial development. At the very least, though, a reduction in manufacture cost will cut into the massive losses the PS division has suffered to date.

Hey Kid.

I'm disappointed. I know it sounds shallow. I know, I know gameplay over graphics...

I haven't played Wii yet.

How come I have not seen a single good looking Wii title ever since it was announced?

A title that sparks my interest solely with its visuals(with the exception of Galaxy)?

I mean just take a gander at Rogue Leader for example..yes Rogue Leader Cube 2001 launch title!

It still looks better than all Wii titles released so far in 2007 on a technical level!

That's not tolerable if you ask me.
Why can't they just release some good looking shots of good looking games if I may ask?

Where are the good looking games?
I want to have a reason to buy.

Yes, lets dump the cheaper version and sell the more expensive version at a deeper loss.

Demand outweighs Brains.

It cost more to manufacture the cheaper PS3 than the $600 model fyi
