Sony NGP announced, likely to lose to 3DS

Thursday saw the announcement of the successor to Sony’s PlayStation Portable, codenamed NGP or  ´Next Generation Portable´. Up until now, I was busy producing this report about all devices scheduled for 2011 (in German). As expected, the device will feature an OLED display and impressive hardware power. Apparently, porting PS3 games over to the new handheld will be a simple task and content does not have to be scaled down much. The only real innovation lies in the controls. Besides two analogue sticks and a directional pad, the NGP will feature a touch-sensitive panel on the back of the device. It also comes with built-in 3G for online gaming and downloads, although I have significant doubts whether 3G is fast and reliable enough for constant connections.

What is interesting is that Sony is developing a two-tier strategy in this field. Alongside the NGP, the company has announced the ´PlayStation Suite´, a new marketplace with less hardware hungry PlayStation titles, aimed at Android smartphones and tablets with a set of minimum specifications. Undoubtedly, the yet-to-be-announced ´Xperia Play´ by Sony Ericsson will be one of those devices. The underlying idea seems to be that ´PlayStation Suite´ will be the bait to get users to eventually buy an NGP for the full experience. The new marketplace is also expected to connect the Android devices with the NGP and the PlayStation3.

While it seems at first that Sony is employing a completely different philosophy to Nintendo here – pursuing perfection of existing technologies rather than innovation – there are also some similarities between the NGP and Nintendo’s 3DS, which will be available at the end of March in Europe and North America.

Both devices feature augmented reality games and social services. The NGP will offer ´Near´, which shows other owners in your vicinity, what they are playing and how far they have played. The service will also record your own movements. The 3DS will offer ´Streetpass´, which automatically connects to other devices near you to transfer data and virtual goods (similar to the tag mode in ´Animal Crossing: Wild World´ or ´Dragon Quest IX´). While some experts point out that such features are really only effective in Japan, where a large part of the population lives in densely populated areas, whereas they will be practically useless on other territories, the issue of data protection remains. These handhelds will require careful adjustments of the privacy settings, which will hopefully be in place, to make sure the owner actually wants to share his data.

I already asked the question whether the 3DS will hit markets too late and at too high a price. With the NGP officially announced for the holiday season 2011 and a delay until spring 2012 a likely move given Sony's track record, I no longer believe that the 3DS will come too late. The price of around $250/€250 remains painfully high, though. Especially given how the 3DS lacks the high class finish of the DSi XL or, indeed, the NGP. It will sell well regardless, but I would have preferred a price point of $200/€200 for consumers to buy the device without remorse.
Analysts expect the NGP to be even more expensive, at $300/€300 or above. Regardless of how well produced the device will feel, this will price Sony out of the market, for sure. I do not think that anyone who will play the odd casual PlayStation game on his Android device will want to invest that much into a dedicated gaming device. I certainly would not. It takes an innovative and unique feature like 3D to convince me to spend this type of amount and I will do so only grudgingly. Also, the NGP will encourage plenty of ports from the PlayStation3. So I expect a fair bit of cannibalisation between the new handheld and its home console sibling. While I expect ´PlayStation Suite´ to be a fairly successful service, the NGP is almost bound to fail and sell even less than its predecessor. The 3DS, albeit at a steep price, will sell extremely well, though. My guess is that Nintendo will sell more than 20 million units in 2011. The company expects to sell four million units in the first four weeks of availability in Japan with barely a week's availability in Europe and North America.

EDIT Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens has weighed in on the debate about the NGP price saying that "my hope is sub £200 (...) but I suspect something in the £229 - £249 [range] to be more likely." He continued that Sony had learnt "the lesson of over-engineered hardware" with regard to the original PSP. They have indeed and more obviously so with the PlayStation3. Back in 2006, they were losing up to $300 on each unit sold. Meanwhile, GameStop has posted an estimated price of $999,99 for the device, probably as a marketing trick, but taken the site down since then.

EDIT Now, Ubisoft's executive director of EMEA, Alain Corre, has gone on record to say that he expects an attractive price for the NGP: "I trust Sony to know their market very well and to be able to offer a price that will make their machine attractive. (...) If Sony can capture this huge market - and they do have a unique offer for that market with the NGP - then success will definitely be on the agenda for them."

I absolutely agree. As long as Sony manages to keep the price below €300 / $300, the device will sell successfully, I believe. But, comparing the 3DS and NGP, if you have to pay a premium for a machine that offers, albeit far more detailed, 2D graphics only, Sony will not be able to convince enough punters for the console to become a success.

Are the 3DS and NGP really competing? These devices seem to be targeted at very different audiences. I really don’t want to hear about another “console war”, especially one for handhelds.

Personally I think that both devices seem amazing, it is defiantly a great time for video games. I do agree that much of the success of the NGP will come down to price. Sony said that there would be different tiers of NGP, only one would offer 3G. This gives me the hope that they will release a competitively priced “core” unit. Another key factor will be software, if the NGP has titles that take advantage of its unique feature such as front/rear multi-touch panels along with its robust online capabilities then it may be able to carve out a pretty large market for itself.

E3 will defiantly be interesting this year.

Falafelkid, I agree with your thoughts about the two handhelds.
On the one hand you have the user (notable not a "player") who likes his shiny new tech, but he normaly turns to the newest Iphone/Ipad/android - handhelt and plays with games as much as with the general app.
On the other we have the player that looks for the newest gimmick (in the right sense of the word i.e. new ingenious tech) to make the games pop-out (pun intended) and be more fun. It´s all about the interface.

"psp2/NGP is a waste of time and money and it shall end up like ps3 at very best"

Ha, if it ends up like the PS3 then we can expect great things.

The ps3 has easily the best exclusive line up of any console out. Great quality games that appeal to all kinds of gamers, Mod Nation Racers, Little Big Planet, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, MLB: The Show, etc. It goes on and on.

Keep playing favorites though, all you're doing is forcing yourself to miss out on great games.

jerry said...

Can we avoid the doom and gloom articles for a moment, it's not 2007.

Saying the NGP is bound to fail due to it's unannounced/speculated price is quite silly. Look at the Ipad and how it sells. That thing has models that go for upwards of 800 dollars. Yes it's a handy device but the majority of the people who buy it just want to access the app store, which is flooded with an unlimited supply of hot garbage.

Everyone knows the 3DS is going to dominate the NGP, it's a nintendo handheld, no one stands a chance. The NGP is catered towards a completely different demographic though and if Sony markets the NGP correctly and prices it near what the 3DS is going for, they'll definitely give nintendo a run for their money.

That's a good thing too, competition is good in the videogame industry. It causes people to work harder and to think outside the box, lest we get flooded with worthless plastic instruments and recycled FPS games year after year.

I'm buying both handhelds and both are going to be awesome.

no 3d? is this for real? then there is not a huge deal about ps3 games coming to it as most ate 3d anyway. I think leaving that out will hurt them mostly cause ps fanboys are graphic shores so it can only make me conclude that this system is going to be very competively priced...especially since its missing a 3d component reducing its mass production price.though with added 3g and multi touch it may balance that out.

nintendo won't have an issue selling 3ds...and Sony won't be their major competitor on this medium...it will be from Apple devices.

You might want to skip those caps, there. Anyway, I think it is obvious he is holding it like that intentionally, so as to not obscure the view and allow people to actually see the device. Let us not forget: if Sony are good at something it is beautiful and ergonomically sound industrial design. The original PlayStation controller is perfectly designed.

why use tech and expence of ps3 on a 60 inch HD tv to build a portable system game wen the same DESIRED EFFECT can be done on 3DS with less expence and in 3D anything psp2 does in raw tech power the 3DS can also do with minor changes =COMMONSENSE capcom are clearly making this point with there res evil 5 on 3DS statment and there

The uncharted demo with the touch controls was clearly just a tech demo, don't be stupid.

I don't understand why you keep coming with an argument that graphics don't matter. No one is claiming the NGP is going to be a better handheld because f the graphics. I haven't read anywhere about the NGP being the better machine. People are excited about it because it's a new handheld from Sony.

Say what you want but the PSP was nowhere near a failure. It's sold 64+ million units. That is nowhere near a failure.

You can talk gloom and doom all you want. I'd love to have a handheld that I can play uncharted, resistance, killzone & etc on. It's going to be an awesome handheld. If you don't want it, oh well. In the end it'll be your loss.

any handheld gaming device that released after the original DS that doednt have dual-screen is OBSOLETE

these fundamental FACTS seem to not exist in sony fanboys head

psp had no dualscreen or touch screen and ran from out dated discs there for it was sony taking on GAMEBOY in a DS era FACT

NGP again fails to address dual screen tactile touch instead offers a phone like set up and fails and obsoletes its self WITH NO 3D

psp was outdated before it even started the same applys to NGP vs 3Ds....

nintendo new this and engineered 3DS to be just right and any attempt by sony to HARDCORE SPEC RACE HYPE AGAINST 3DS will be pointless

Exactly, I own the psp and the ds. I love both, I use my DS more but the psp is still a great handheld. I hate the stupid console wars people go on about. There's no need for it. Not everyone has the same taste in games and all 3 platforms offer great exclusives.

To each their own.

Falafelkid said...

Hi Jerry.

I think you might find this interesting.

It is. If Sony can really play out the interoperability feature between NGP and PS3, they will deliver on something that Nintendo has, quite frankly, failed on so far. Anyone remember that Pac-Man game that was to use a GameCube console and various GameBoy Advance handhelds? To my knowlegde that never came out. This feature has great potential and could certainly make or break a system like the NGP. I stand by my assessment, though, that Sony only has a chance below the $300/€300 price point.

Did the people from NibRis ever respond to your questions? I've been dying to read your article for some 3 years now. ha.

They did, in fact. And I am just waiting on a response by a Polish economical agency. So, I am quite optimistic that you will be able to read the article very soon.

lol what the fuck are you talking about ???if anything it will look sharper on the NGP with such a high resolution on a small screen !!! how is that wasted specs lol?????????????

I disagree falafelkid. First that "Pac-Man thing" did get released and was called Pac-Man Vs. It was a connectivity title.

What that story says is that developers are encouraged to make the same games for the PS3 and NGP. This is a horrid plan and exactly why the PSP struggled for so long. The library consisted of mostly watered down PS2 ports. If Similar happens here, it would dampen consumer excitement and auto-cannibalize Sony's market, who wants to buy inferior versions of games that they already own?

Furthermore one of the commentators on that story proffered the idea that you could "take your Ps3 game on the road." This is an idiotic thing to want as that would require somebody to buy a $300 PS3, a $60 PS3 game, a $350-$50 NGP, and another copy of the same PS3 game on NGP, all for the privilege of playing a watered down version of a game for 3 hours outside.

This is stupid, and something the PSP already did with Super Monkey Ball adventure. It was stupid then and it is stupid now.

Falafelkid said...

Hi Anonymous.

I totally agree with your assessment of the PSP's flaws. The PSP, of course, was not a flop as some contend. But it certainly was no success, either.

I disagree falafelkid. First that "Pac-Man thing" did get released and was called Pac-Man Vs. It was a connectivity title.

Fair enough. But the game was never sold. And there were practically no other games that linked Nintendo's handhelds to its home consoles. It is obvious that Nintendo completely missed the opportunity to connect its console lines.

What that story says is that developers are encouraged to make the same games for the PS3 and NGP.

Completely wrong. The rumour clearly stated:

Sony is also insisting that it 'does not want exactly the same game' on NGP and PS3 -- there 'has to be a reason for the NGP title.' 'They want at least some kind of interactivity between the two versions with NGP-only extras.'

And any gamer must admit that the idea would be a great one. Whether Sony can implement it appropriately is another matter. But if they can, Sony has found the ´unique selling point´ they still need for the NGP.

Anonymous said...

Well they didn't get "exactly" the same game on PSP last time. They added a new subtitled and maybe a token new character or something.

Making the exact same game with a little back touch panel control isn't going to "differentiate" the PS3 version from the NGP version.

so the 3ds is capble of running ps3 x360 type ports in 3d on 3DS

SO EXPLAIN PSP2 NGP PS3 HYPE AS 3DS IS ALSO OFFERING THIS BUT WITH DUAL SCREEN AND 3D

DS metroid hunters all the cods and bond games and that halo demo at ign wen all that halo on DS rumor was around CLEARLY SHOWS DS AS A TRUE FPS DEVICE CONBINING D-PAD WITH MOUSE TOUCH SCREEN

3DS NOW HAS ANALOG AND MOUSE TOUCH SCREEN AND MOTION TILT

PSP2 HAS A SECOND ANALOG IT STIL FAILS TO EVEN REMOTLY COMPARE

why would a CORE GAMER choose a weak plastic second nub OVER A TACTILE LAG FREE MOUSE LIKE TOUCH SCREEN

Anon,

The whole casual / hardcore debate is over. People haven't talked about that for about 2 years now. Yes, the wii sells boatloads but no one cares about it anymore. Most people have moved on and you rarely hear developers talking about the wii and how they're trying to crack the 1st party code. The 360/PS3 are almost equal in terms of hardware sales and developers are happy making games for those systems. The wii will continue to sell well but it's old news. People have moved on and no one really cares.

Anonymous said...

Funny way of people showing that they don't care about Wii, considering that it was still the #1 console last year despite all the hype saying it was finished.

Also you say...

"Most people have moved on and you rarely hear developers talking about the wii and how they're trying to crack the 1st party code"

What is this "1st party code?" Is this some sort of crack about third party games not selling on Wii? Well obviously one has to look at the caliber of games released to find that out.

It seems like the majority of 3rd parties released a bunch of casual low-budget crap, whereas Nintendo released a lot of high quality games in almost every genre.

The only reason 3rd parties have "given up" is because their crappy games failed to hoodwink the Wii's audience. Cue the insane sales of Wii Fit versus the anemic sales of all of their competitor's copycat clones. Cue Wii Sports Resort thrashing all comers, including embarrassing "Me too" titles from Sony and MS.

Maybe they should try making quality games first, and make an effort to have all the games they make be quality. See, somebody is going to pull a good 3rd party game for Wii that didn't do well out of their ass and use it as a rubric, completely ignoring other factors like the reputation of said third party to Wii owners.

For example, Red Steel 2, despite being a great game, failed to move units. By itself this looks bad, but when you look at all the games UBISoft published over the years, it makes clear sense that they mostly published trash. Who would buy another game from them?

And hahah "most people have moved on." Hilarious.

Hi Jerry.

Yes, the wii sells boatloads but no one cares about it anymore. Most people have moved on and you rarely hear developers talking about the wii and how they're trying to crack the 1st party code.

That is absolutely not true. Finally, third parties are dominating the Wii platform. The best-selling games on Wii in 2010 were:

1. ´Just Dance 2´ (Ubisoft)
2. ´Super Mario Galaxy 2´ (Nintendo)
3. ´Donkey Kong Country Returns´ (Nintendo)
4. ´Epic Mickey´ (Disney)
5. ´Michael Jackson The Experience´ (Ubisoft)
6. ´uDraw Studio´ (THQ)
7. ´Wipeout: The Game´ (Activision)
8. ´Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4´ (Warner Bros.)
9. ´Call of Duty Black Ops´ (Activision)
10. ´Wii Party´ (Nintendo)

That list speaks a clear language as far as third party success on the Wii platform is concerned. Every major publisher will want a piece of this pie, you can be sure of that.

jerry said...

When I said "No one cares..." I still stand by that. I rarely see in the press anymore people talking about the wii and how the core is hard to appease, etc. Back in 07-08 you would see stuff like that all the time from developers and publishers.

Of course third party support has gotten better, goldeneye is a great game, and why is that? Because they made a quality shooter that is accessible to anyone (motion controls/classic controller support). They didn't scratch their heads for months and try to figure out some dumb motion gimmick, they pretty took the FPS formula that has been profitable for years and applied it to the wii.

What I meant by the "1st party code" wasn't a crack on 3rd party support. For a while there, developers were trying so hard to figure out why nintendo's games would sell boat loads but theirs wouldn't.

Also, with the "people don't care" statement. I also meant that for gamers in general. In 07-08 you saw a lot of fanboys duking it out on the message boards about the whole "casual/core" debate. You rarely see that now, if ever on gaming forums. People have accepted the wii for what it is and moved on.

It's no longer this enigma that was confusing the entire videogames industry.

Also, if you compare the lists from the Wii, PS3 & 360, it speaks loudly of the wii's userbase.

Anonymous said...

"Also, if you compare the lists from the Wii, PS3 & 360, it speaks loudly of the wii's userbase."

Not really. Lots of "serious" games are in Nintendo's Top games, like NSMB Wii and Zelda, Mario Galaxy, etc. Just because 3rd parties were able to eke out a few million sellers early on with low budget tripe at bargain bin prices, mostly knocking off Nintendo successful games, doesn't mean that's what the userbase "wants." It's just all they made for years until it just stopped tricking people. then they cancelled everything.

The rest of your post was back-tracking that isn't worth commenting on.
