Reports about a significant hardware failure rate of the newly released 40GB model of the PlayStation3 seem to have been overstated, it appears. Dutch gaming news site Gamed.nl originally reported that Belgium online retailer Game Mania had 40 percent of all 40 GB models returned.
Gamed.nl later updated the story and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe commented on the rumours:
Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3.
As I said above, it appears that the case has been overstated. But since it is early days yet, I am waiting to hear from other retailers.

Overstated? This story appears to be completely false. I think the fact that not a signal other retailer in Europe or North America for that matter have experienced this problem narrows this down to either being an issue confined to this one Belgium retailer (unlikely) or a completely false story.

Fantastic jump in sales? I find that difficult to believe, honestly. My team is actually annoyed by this, since it's another case we're forced to dedicate toward PS3 items, which just aren't selling. The 40 giggers, since they've arrived, have sold a total of zero units, and my friends in Circuit City, Best Buy, and Gamestop are reporting almost the same result.
ReplyDeleteThe new SKU may have caused a jump in sales someplace. However, with what I've seen, I'd hardly call it "fantastic."
ey mr falafel you got in trouble or what???

ReplyDeleteI'm not suprised about the problems in the playstation 3 40gb. A lot of the early models of big systems have problems. That's what happened for the 360 as well.
ReplyDeleteI love the wii though. It is a truely groundbreaking system. I have an old school nintendo review site at http://classicvideogamereviews.blogspot.com/
But I expect great things from wii and playstation 3 in the next few months.
confirmed. is it any surprise?
