More ´last secret´ hints?

Nintendo has "more surprises" in store for Wii owners, NOA´s Perrin Kaplan told IGN in an interview about the marketing campaign for the upcoming blockbuster title ´Metroid Prime 3´:

We still have a lot of our more traditional marketing efforts planned. People will see it all shortly, from ads to many of the usual tactics we use to support our key products. Plus: a few more surprises like the Metroid Prime 3 Preview. And no, I'm still not going to spoil the fun and tell you about it ahead of time!

Those surprises seem to be directly related to ´Metroid Prime 3´, but while they may be used to market the game over the next few weeks, the mere mention is reason enough to believe that they will become permanent channels or other features in their own right.

I know that this seems like a never-ending story, but this blog was founded to unravel the Wii´s secrets and, in fact, Nintendo execs themselves have made sure that their company´s latest home console remains shrouded in mysteries and rumours. Is it just good marketing or is there more to it? You decide, but read on before making up your mind.

Only last month, Kaplan´s boss, NOA president Fils-Aime, hinted at a surprise coming to Wii in September. And, of course, Perrin Kaplan hinted at more surprises way back in October, which never seemed to materialize.

In May, I found that a Ubisoft trailer contained a visual representation of a holographic projection add-on for the Wii. Ubisoft claimed that this was no concrete product, but rumours about a VR attachment for Wii are older than the Nintendo ON clip, so it deserved to be mentioned.

For a thorough summary of all theories, hints and mentions regarding a last secret, check the commentary to this post. Please appreciate that the post was written before the console´s launch and has not been updated.

All in all, I have become cautious to believe in a ´last secret´ big enough in scale to overshadow the revolutionary controller design (as I have originally been told by a very reliable source). But I still firmly believe that Nintendo is about to announce some new feature that will somehow extend or improve the Wii´s hardware or online functions.

I've learned long ago not to take anything Kaplan says with much weight. From the big secret in october to the wii being region unlocked she just spews nonsense. If the rumours that shes leaving are true I'm all for it.

I think we'll see more channels coming up but the question is will any of them cater to the hardcore gamer. It appears mroe and mroe that Nitnendo is changing their overall focus to casual gaming. Lets hope theres a good surprsie for hte hardcore.

hi falefelkid!

i totally agree with you, there is a last secret. and yes, i could swear it will be about grafics, visuals.
it is a coincidence that the chip is named hollywood? or all the mysterious comments of nintendo like
" It’s convenient to make games that are played on TVs, but I always wanted to have a custom-sized screen that wasn’t the typical four-cornered cathode-ray-tube TV. I’ve always thought that games would eventually break free of the confines of a TV screen to fill an entire room. But I would rather not say anything more about that.”
and there are lots more of it...
so i think, it will be a visor(or some kind of special glasses).
there were rumors, too in the past that it will have something to do with transmitting feelings like hot and cold( "touching is good, but feeling is better")
so i hope that nintendo will release something cool for hardcore-gamers.
we will see in september i hope

If indeed Nintendo does have a BIG hardware annoucement coming in september then I reckon it'll be one of two things.

1: HDD, which would enable Nintendo to release more game consoles software onto Virtual console such as Dreamcast, saturn and GC. Id love to see them release Animal crossing on WiiWare for around 30 pounds. Or even a simular title but with Mii's.

2: Hologrpahic Display Unit. Many people still believe that its impossible to do such an ambitious project at a low cost. But we know a japanese games company has been working on this for years now. It was pretty much confirmed by a big movie producer. Maybe Metroid Prime 3 makes use of this and is why it was actually put back untill now?

I think its certin that Nintendo is working on new firmware to make the Wii a more robust online system so that you can interact with your friends and family more. It'll probly be simular in some ways to Microsoft 360 only it'll have Nintendo's unique design and ways of doing things. Plus it'll be free.

hey i got an idea how about something as simple as a headset lol, all online multiplayer games should have headset support, i was actually thinking about getting mario strikers even though soccer does not interest me at all but it looked good, then the realization hey Wii has no headset support.

oh and touch-gen don't hold your breath on dreamcast and GC titles in virtual console, umm especially GC titles which the Wii already plays, i am am however hoping for some gameboy action in virtual console, i would love to get the mario, zelda, and metroid gameboy titles from the gameboy line,

Yeah I disagree with the thought that Perrin's comments about Prime 3 have anything to do with the "last secret" of the Wii. Plus, there is only a week left until Corruption gets released, so I'm guessing there will only be traditional marketing coming for that game.

As far as a secret in September, it seems like a pretty weird time to announce something. I would have said Lepzig, but thats August? And, if they are talking about Lepzig, then why not introduce it at E3? Maybe to focus on the mainstream at E3 and the hardcore later? I don't know, but I'm sure it is something just as simple as a hard drive or microphone attachment.

saw this on another site:

about 3/4 down the page

Q) What is the suprise, Reggie have a suprise on September announced, but what is this “surprise”?

A) Wait until your WiiConnect24 systems makes your Wii flash blue in mid-September. Plenty of fans will be extremely happy, as this is certainly not something minor.

the plot thickens!

Kapplin mention at E306 that a feature for the Wii that the "hardcore" would be pleased about. Has this been shown? I don't think the weather channel counts.

They know how to keep the hype train going, thats for sure.

We will see what it is, I am skeptical but wont be unhappy either way.

This "last secret" concept has made me so very tired.
I've read way to much about this and thought way too much about this.
I almost want it to go away.
I can't take it anymore.

Well Fal you responded in your original post by asking us to refer to the TGS 2005 video for more clues into this issue.

The only information I can speculate on after viewing that video closely, was that VC games could some how be controlled by the Wiimote. (The girl making classic mario jump up by flicking the Wiimote).

Furthermore, its well within Nintendo's reach to enable certain VC games to be playabe online through Wifi.

Is the Wii portable? Why wont this issue die? There is no battery. A battery attachment would look ridiculous. The Wii is not portable.

Is the connection between the Wii and DS going to improve. Yes, I honestly feel strongly that the DS should get some form of VC support. All the systems currently supported on VC are capable of being emulated on the DS as well. How great would it be to be able to transfer VC games you own to the DS to take with you when youre on the go?

Remember, Nintendo is always one to do things simply. No headaches. Mainstream and easy to use.

The Mii channels has much room for improvement. Wii Voip isnt a bad idea. Picture channel should be used to share saved video from games.

Maybe we'll get a dedicated NiFi channel.

Who knows... September does.

The best realistic last Secret i can think about would be the ability to play GC games with the Wiimote.

This would really rule! But by the same time it would make Wiimakes obsolete, what would be nice, bc i'd rather like to play my imported original RE4 version than some cash-in remake by the (since a while) lousy Capcom...
