Nintendo confirms more Wii secrets, PS3 gets own rumours

Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo of America´s Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, has confirmed that there are more secrets about Wii. She gave IGN an interview (most likely at the New York Wii event three weeks ago), which only went live recently, as part of their Weekly Episode 28:

IGN: "Do we have any more surprises on the way before launch?"

Kaplan: "We do have a couple of other surprises. You know probably not as big as what you got today, but more details on a couple of different things that I think people... I think your folks will be very pleased about."

So we can still have fun speculating about Wii.

We can, however, also speculate about PlayStation3. On PS3Forums, a user called ps3insider claims to have access to a prototype and has posted the following:

I said before that you could use the ps3 not only by controller. but as you see now also with remote.

however the question you should ask yourself is. does the remote controller has actually sixaxis compatibility

Already before TGS, another user called Scrivener posted some rumours on the General [M]ayhem forums, basically predicting the following:

* ´Killzone 2´ will be Sony´s secret weapon since, apparently, it looks exactly like the E3 2005 video. He predicts an announcement around launch.

* There will be 200 new PSP titles shipped between now and Christmas.

* Sony has not given up on UMD movies and is starting an initiative to revive the format by reducing the recommended retail price to $15.

About Kaplan´s comments, it seems as if she wants to downplay the proportions of what´s still to come, referring to those secrets only as ´details´. She did make clear, once again, that they will please the hardcore gamer crowd, however.

I am almost absolutely certain that those details have to do with the online service Nintendo has planned for Wii. Remember what Iwata told me at E3 this year:

Maybe you are underestimating the power or potential of Wiiconnect24 now. After all, Wii is a console that can be connected to the internet 24 hours a day with minimal consumption of power. In the near future we can reveal what it can do an then you can understand many secrets behind the Wii machine.

As far as the PS3 rumours are concerned, I believe they are entirely bogus. I don´t think Sony would be able to include motion sensors in the remote control if it came as part of the bundles. If it was an extra, only some users would buy it and developers could not rely on users owning one. Also, the button layout is that of a typical remote which doesn´t lend itself to hitting buttons while moving it around.

As far as the older PS3 rumours are concerned, I don´t believe them either. If Sony had such a killer app with ´Killzone 2´, they would not idly stand by and watch their share value dwindle. If they had one, they would have shown us their secret weapon by now, I believe.

One thing is for certain, though. While Nintendo´s strategy of releasing information only bit by bit seems to have succeeded in generating hype (media coverage, for sure), this has not worked for Sony. News sites like PS3Land are highly critical of the lack of information about Sony´s online plans.

sony is really starting to piss me off. fine, put tilt sensors in the remote: it's not going to help. simple as that. it's more "me too" bullshit and they know it. really, all they'd be doing is underlining that wii is the system to own, if you ask me.

just the *look* of the remote, as well as the buttons functionality and their layout, just scream "80s". don't they? there aren't any tilt sensors in ps3s remote.

...and fuck perrin kaplan and her "secrets". i'm gonna be bitter about the revolution spectulation for years to come. ;) that's my fault, though. oh well!

...okay, i still want to know what they are :P i bet we see nintendo try to incorporate a p2p-type network with wii. i think a fella named anticrawl originally speculated on that idea, and i like it.

we shall see.

oh, and the killzone2 stuff is GRADE A BULLSHIT. simple as that. if they thought they had *anything* on gears of war, they'd have talked about it at least once in the last... what... 2 years? heh. the end.

-"superfan" tactics.

I don't believe Perry Kaplan anymore. Look: Wii region code, "please hardcore gamers"... mmm maybe I'm wrong, I wish I'm.

And Sony... simply trying not to sink in blue ocean...

I hate to be a pessimist, but I don't think we're going to see any earth-shattering secrets. Nintendo's already shown what needs to be shown on the Wii, so I think the suspense to needs to stop.

I agree - the "secrets" marketing scheme has worked all this time, leading Nintendo fans around by the nose-hairs, but at this late point in the game, it's a played-out, obvious and desperate attempt at keeping the hype going towards launch.

I'm pretty sure that the 'details' that Kaplan was referring to were probably unexpected game support. She said that it would please the hardcore gamer crowd, so perhaps it is just her telling us that 'something' is coming to the Wii?

Something unexpected?

Who knows. Riddles are fun.

As for the PS3-Mote thing, I seriously doubt it, for the same reasons that Falafel posted: it's just too much money. They would have to raise the price of the already $600 console just to include 'Sixaxis' support in the remote.

By the way, 'Sixaxis' has got to be the stupidest name in the world. It would have sounded better if they would have gone along with their unoriginality spree and called it the 'Dual Shock 3'.

Hi Midsummer.

So true. I already found Sony explaining the motion sensitivity at E3 with the slogan ´six axes of freedom´ ridiculous. There are only three axes, of course. The fact that one axis goes both ways doesn´t make it six ;)

Oh, and it is also grammatically incorrect, strictly speaking. The plural of ´axis´ is ´axes´. So ´Sixaxis´ really is like calling a car ´Fourwheel´ or a person ´Twoleg´.

maybe No Shock 3 but then i think i read that somewhere else.

About the secrets for the harcore crowd I bet is something in relation to WiiConnect24 hopefully online play could be added later to launch games.

Sixaxis is a stupid name, then again I said the same thing when I first heard the name Wii.

It's just a name, it is the quality of the product that matters to me.

WiiConnect24: I think that the full unveiling of this feature will please the homebrew communitiy, with some modding of games. Do your thing on your computer, send it to your Wii, load it up on WC24, and it'll be put up on the Market.

It could also...replace disks? You buy a basic disk, load it up, and WC24 fills in the data? Like Zelda, for instance ((I'll use OoT as an example)). You bought the disk and you left it INSIDE the Wii for a day. The next time you play, there will be all of the data from the beginning to when you become Older Link, then you repeat, and it goes until the end.

I'm probably not saying it as I want to...I may be trying to describe...uploading variations on the basic game, so that every game is unique. Like, in SMG, there may be a total of twenty planets in the game, but there are actually 40, so there are different combinations and positions fo these planets.

Also, episodic content can be sent, or more like a podcast, but good. Like Sam and Max: you can buy each individual episode, or just buy the entire season.

About the Sony rumors...200 titles for the PSP in two months? They can't make 500,000 consoles in six months, so how are they going to develop that many games? What is the PSP library? 200 games? More? Then how is that library, which started in Feb. 2005, going to DOUBLE int two months? SCEI is going to DIE if the PS3 fails, because the PSP started off great, but is slumping now. And UMD is MIA from most PSP owners. How can they even CONSIDER having a new, unnecessarily complicated and expensive medium when they already tried one and it flat out FAILED?
Ricockulous, I tell you.

How about a "Gamephone"...
Imagine playing MP3 Online and your friend isn't online, but his Wii is. Now you could send a message or an invitation to his Wii wich would then ring or something, just like a telephone.

We have to think about ways how the 24:7 online thing could be used.

Anyone who is thinking there is big secrets left for the Wii is really kidding themselves. I'd say they are feeling insecure, thats why there is hope in them.

Time to wake up children and have your breakfast. You will think more clearly when you eat your breakfast ok.

As for the Sony rumours, that is just ridiculous and I dont believe a word from it. It is like how desperate Nintendo fans were making up garbage months/a year ago, now Sony fans are getting desperate and trying to create illusions.

Im not into buying wii secrets any more either. its totally lame now.
just as i thought the revolution was truly a revolution. all it is a slightly beefed up gamecube with a simple controller. yah sure games are going to be great and fun but nothing really REVOLUTIONARY ABOUT IT.

i thought it was going to be like super futuristic holographic projection, augmented reality type star trek hologoramish type thing.

i still dont know what nintendo is up to. didnt nintendo make some sort of secret deal with steven spielberg? I heard there is a new 3-d thing come out.

in any case im not gonna fall for any more hypebullshit from nintendo. All im going to do is enjoy and play the games. Thats all i can do as a gamer

If the simple controller as you put it becomes the standard it will be a revolution.

Sony already took the first step of the revolution by adding Sixaxis to their controller...

LMFAO.

Well it seems that people still want the PS3 regardless of the bad press. Game Stop/EB Games sold out of their preorders in under a few hours. It seems that the North American launch of 400,000 units will more then likely sell out pretty fast. Now the question is can Sony deliver the 1.2 million units by December 31 in North America? Sony appears to be sticking with that number; perhaps that is why they delayed the European launch?

Personally I don’t think Sony’s sales will have any influence on the Wii sales figures (or vice versa) but could definitely cause trouble for Microsoft.

The first Nintendo Wii television ad has been shown in Japan:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htabgrx9JAc

Original:
"Kore ha nan deshou?
Atarashii rimokon.
Nintendo Uii rimokon."
(Note: "Rimokon" is a combonation of the words "remote" and "controller" — combining words is something the japanese like to do.)

Translation:
"What is this?
A new controller.
Nintendo Wii controller."

And yes, japanese TV commercials often are this short.

The only thing your responsible for IALS is spreading BS and spamming for Sony.

Some Guy, well it was expected to sell out anyway, big deal? Nintendo will have more units sold by the EOY and have many people hyped at XMAS creating a flow of word of mouth.

And thats only USA. Japan get barely any units and the rest of the world waits until March.

Just want to get this off my chest real quickly. The Gamecube was by far the superior machine compared to the ps2. Graphics, gameplay, even the controller in my opinion. I've had plenty of time with both systems and have thrown in on anything playstation. Screw playstation and screw sony. The gamecube got no love and deservidly so the way nintendo played things although I still contend it was the 2nd best system last gen. The Wii won't suffer from that poor support but they are seriosly annoying in their lack of serious online gaming. So I'll stick with Halo till then.
