Wii outselling PS3 in Japan six to one

Nintendo´s Wii console is further gaining momentum, currently outselling the PlayStation3 at a ratio of six to one in Japan, Reuters reports (via Yahoo News).

Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Wii game console outsold Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 by a ratio of over 6 to 1 in June in Japan, a game magazine publisher said, solidifying Nintendo's leading position.

Nintendo sold 270,974 units of the Wii in the four weeks ended June 24, compared with 41,628 units for the PS3 and 17,616 units for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, according to data from Enterbrain.

The Wii's lead against the PS3 was 4 to 1 in April and 5 to 1 in May.

Was avbout to post that earlier today.

And other news Sony Australia are trying to manipulate numbers here. Quite pathetic.

BTW IALS, your so called 'hit game' Motostorm is good on graphics however plays like crap. The graphics are good but not mind blowing over anything else. However it was a demo and will give the final revision another shot if I have the chance.

If these are the kind of 'hits' PS3 have in store I doubt the other two consoles have too much to worry about with the PS3 being overly expensive and all.

6 to 1 Sony should be extremely worried with Japan being a major zone for them.

Yeah, I am kind of ambivalent about ´Motorstorm´. I regard it as the best PS3 title to date, but it has some serious flaws, I believe. It plays slow, especially when compared to the extremely fast-paced ´Excite Truck´.

Also, most people I know have tried the motion control but switched back to the normal button layout after a few minutes of failing badly.

That is exactly the wrong kind of game, Sony needs. They need games that get people excited about the motion control feature. AFter all, that is the only feature that distinguishes the PS3 from the Xbox360. I have yet to see a PS3 game that looks better than 360 titles.

I didnt actually use the motion controller as it was at a retail shop so was bolted in so I cant comment on that.

If you regard that title as the best PS3 title to date then its quite sad.

I have only physically seen with my own eyes F1 (which wasnt bad)and Resistance (which I played but since I dont like FPS I cant comment much, was ok though).

But yes yoou are right, they need to make use of their motion controller better and they need to get some of X360's customer base or they will be in big trouble in the Western market. Or I should say; even in deeper trouble.

I wonder what the battarang would of been like. I have never liked the PSX or PS2 controller and wished they moved away from these designs.

Hi Fal...

It doesnt surprise me at all that Wii is selling so well compared to the PS3/X360. Gaming I feel is reaching a stagnet point so early in its lifetime. Also becoming too focused on just one group! mainly males 17-25 years old.

Not that this is a bad thing. Personally I fall within this small group and when these games are done well they can be a very enjoyable experience and In some instances blow me away! ( ZELDA: OOT)

Both of Nintendo's latest wonder-machines are branching out to new people. Something Nintendo has done many times in the past. After all if your the only person on the market with something everybody wants then it means MEGA-BUCKS!

Wii's success is based on its price and the Wii's remote. Which doesnt only mean good news for the consumer but probly more importantly the developers that create the games we love. They are able to create ambitious software that they couldnt do before, for fear of not selling enough copies to recoup the investment and make a worthy profit. After all these are companies that need to make money to keep making games! It just makes sense.

With the X360/PS3 big games need to sell roughly 500,000+ copies just to get into making a profit and if that game is a flop then thats millions wasted. Infact this is something we are seeing more and more of. Companies finacial reports, reporting major fincaial loses! With Wii its not such a gamble and theres even a larger demographic so you can create games such as Brain Training for very little money and yet it could be amazing to interacte with! Compelling millions to buy it.

At the end of the day, graphics I dont think matter to people as much as Sony and Microsoft would lead you to believe...Dont get me wrong I do like them when they are done right but I would rather have a new experience with the type of games I love than just another five years f the same.....

Well the PS3 has probably two other games better than motostorm, but they are not quite system selling games. (Although once upon a time they would have been.)

Virtual Fighter 5
and
Resistance

VF5 is a time exclusive port and if you like Fighting Games is pretty good. Resistance is that game Sony hoped would be the new Halo. A new IP first person shooter that would bring gamers over to Sony's camp.

But it didn't work because Xbox 360 has like 3-4 FPS that are better or at least as good.

Both 360 games AND PS3 games look absolutly STUNNING compared to Wii games. There is no need for them to outshine each other when they look this good.

PLEASE take a gander at the newly released gamefront Mass Effect, Assasins Creed and Fallout 3 shots for a moment...

...I gauranty you what you see on those shots you wont see on Wii even 5 years from now...

Obviously not! But your not getting Wii. It's all about the game! And if play magazine is right about Metroid Prime 3's controls being as revolutionary for First Person games! Then games like Halo have far bigger competiton from Wii than PS3's amazing graphics!

And incase you havent noticed...ppl prefer Wii...So there!!! lol :)

i'm not expecting ps3/360 graphics from wii, but i expect them to double the gamecube's.. which is not happening, and won't any time soon... and that's BS

i saw some shrek, mario party 8 and others new games's screenshots and they all look like below-average gamecube games, some even n64 like (rattatolie, something like that). i could acctualy count the polygons.

the wii si nice, but graphics just suck hard. i hope it's developers fault

and wtf is with mario party's fake wide screen?? that's just insane in 2007

i really hope that metroid's controlls are that good, that would be very very nice

I have to agree with you on that. The reason this seems to be happening is because developers didnt expect Wii to be such a hit and instead of taking time to develop these games they rushed the software to make it out within the launch of Wii. However, I wouldnt say Wii isnt capable of good graphics. Certinly their not going to achieve X360 quality. But they can and do look beautiful. I think if you look at games like Harry Potter, Mario Galaxy, MP3 and more you can see the potential.

Id keep my eye on E3 this year! Am sure many third parties and Nintendo using the hardware as it deserves.

harry potter doesn't look that special too me. prime 3 looks exactly like prime 1 and 2.

well, on the other hand galaxy and brawl looks nice. since these two are first party, so there is still hope

but STILL these two won't look better than RE4 or Rouge Leader. and i don't want to count some original xbox games.

i dont need HD graphics, but wii is really suffering graphic-wise. i can't belive that 6-7 years old visuals cost 250$. visuals do matter, it's VIDEO game system, crying out loud. we are watching stuff on TV, i don't want countable-polygon crap

it's such a shame that developers are not trying harder. hopefully, that will change

I totally agree that dev's havent up till now payed Wii the development time needed to make their software visually better than it should be. I would put this down to companies predicting MS and Sony's systems to sell better and therefore have a larger install base.

But as you can see this just isnt the case. Once again they got it wrong as people so often do in life. Now, developers are having to shift there attention onto Wii due to its massive success. And because of this they are rushing software quickly onto the system to make a quick buck. Even so...Wii is meant to be around twice as powerfull as Gamecube and your right in saying that most games havent really shown that. MP3 in still screens doesnt look that great, but im sure when that game is finished, and you see it i motion that it'll look amazing with its bloom lighting etc. Just dont expect amazing things from Wii visually. If you must have the best graphics! Id recommend a PC.

I cannot wait until E3...I hope we see games that make full use of Wii's hardware.

Maybe Falafelkid has seen a few games that look amazing???? Welll Fala???

Hi Touch-Gen.

To be honest, I never got see many games at shows like the E3 (or like the Wii launch event in London). I just conduct interviews, really.

But if I had to single out one game that will absolutely amaze everyone, it would have to be ´Metroid Prime 3´. That game already played great at the E3 2006. And that was well over a year ago. Since, Nintendo has been giving it the ´Zelda: Twilight Princess´ treatment (in terms of polishing it)... and I cannot wait for it to come out.

I cudnt agree more...Retro is a very accomplished studio that has the backing of Nintendo's MIGHT! And if MP1/2 are anything to go buy + the inclusion of the Wii-Remote into the mix I believe where in for another leap in console FPS that has the potential to revolutionise this genre. Something that hasnt happen since Goldeneye on the N64.

More than anything about this game. I cannot wait to see the impressions of the control scheme. I really hope Nintendo and Retro can get FPS's to work the way we all imagine they would on Wii. If they can do that then I think the controller can really prove itself to the hardcore gaming community and developers alike. Then maybe people will take Wii more seriously. Not that they arent, I mean which development company wouldnt take a money making machine serious like they did with everyother one...PS1/2, Every Nintendo Handheld, NES, SNES, DS and the Wii of course.
