WiiSpray project reveals second prototype
The German student behind the WiiSpray project has just published pictures of a second prototype controller. WiiSpray utilizes a spraycan shell for the Wiimote to turn the console into a digital graffiti tool.
When the first prototype was unveiled, Core77 reported about the project with the likes of SlashGear, Engadget and Joystiq picking up the story.
I have been in contact with the inventor and am hoping to bring you further news about the project soon. As the project is his diploma thesis, he is currently unable to divulge too many details about industry interest in the project. But just imagine what kind of gameplay this controller and application could spawn, if released commercially.

I really hope that Nintendo contact these passionate people, and award them with a offer to bring it officaly to Wii-users. Either trough license agreements or purchasing the whole project.
If Nintendo really expressing Game 3.0, a 2-way communication and user-defined gaming future - now its the time to show the world!

Wow more gimmicks. Nintendo, cancel the Wii before more people create useless crap!
- Kony
Hey Kony. Thanks for your comment. But do you also think the Zapper is a gimmick? I don't think you have used the existing peripherals, have you? At least some of them revolutionize the way we play games. It sounds like you are simply clinging to the status quo, for old time's sake. In that case, you probably opposed the introduction of the PC mouse in the eighties for the same reasons.
At any rate, let us not forget that those "gimmicks" as you call them are the main reasons why the Wii has become the market leader in home consoles by a long shot. And Sony and Microsoft are scrambling to issue similar controllers. I would rather call the 360 and PS3 controllers "useless crap" than the Wiimote and some of the great peripherals it has spawned.
this is truly just another gimmick, another shell, another piece of plastics..
i can just see my little brother playing with it.. for an hour or two
guess what wii needs... GAMES!!!
some awesome games just came and are coming on 360 and ps3 while wii prooves to be just a toy, a hype, something that peaople are buying just to try it
there are some games on the way... but nothing spectacular and must-have
Exactly, pero_detlic.
I'm welcome to any innovation and changes, but if it doesn't prove itself for a couple of years, then it is what it is, a freaking gimmick! We have seen little good to come out of the Wii-mote. As petro_detlic said, it's nothing more than a toy. Developers are expressing their unique ideas on platforms they're more comfortable making it on, mainly ones with powerful processors and conventional controls. The Wii has proved nothing. It's just a fad, a successful gimmick that will last shortly. With no exciting games coming out this year and the next, it will eventually degrade as such.
i feel ripped off as a consumer. even nintendo itself isn't making enough effort on their games, i've got mostly pre-gamecube graphics, full bag of plastic add-ons... not to mention that i will have to buy 4 wiimotion plus to get true motion control and if i wish to play some new games...
that is RIP OFF
and that's not all- they are releasing "remastered" gamecube games! make some NEW games please!!
i almost feel stupid for buying the wii
i was a huge nintenod fan, but now i have to reconsider that
i remember some great times with N64 and gamecube, there was a bunch of games that i wanted to play and realy enjojed them
now, im just sick of this wii fit/play/music/sport/crap/toilet brush cleaning mini games that paris hilton and my grandma would buy
and therefore i will not definetly buy a plastic can so i could make a "painting" on my tv
nintendo is just running for cheap money, nothing more. it is a fact now
"But just imagine what kind of gameplay this controller and application could spawn, if released commercially"
painting graffiti? killing flys and bugs? window washing? falafel, come on...
i had that idea two years ago with getting up in mind when the wii wasnt even out now some german kid is turning it into reality...lets see...
IALS
Geez!
Bunch of grouches!
Kony,
I'm listening but,
You have to explain your points with examples.
You wrote:
"but if it doesn't prove itself for a couple of years, then it is what it is, a freaking gimmick!"
What does "proving itself" mean?
Here's my "proof"
Im a gamer and I love my wii. I have all 3 systems.
The wii is selling great and it's really fun.
The new Wario for Wii is really awesome and innovative.
The animation frame rate and graphics are sick.
I'm playing all my old favorite classics for cheap.
Do you know how nice it is to just pick up Zelda Nes from my desk with the push of a remote control button?.
Great old school music, graphics and sound.
Metroid is really fun.
Everyone knows the THE FORCE for wii
is the better version.
The force is really fun moving with 2 controllers!
Destroying a Wookie with a left jab is friggin fun.
Then there's the lightsabers!
Which will only get better with the add-on!
And tonight I played video games with my parents for the 1st time. Seriously people, it was really fun.
My girlfriend plays tennis with me and hogs the controller for Animal Crossing. It's just fun and cheap and unique.
Very unique.
Like as in the new standard.
Nintendo Rules.
And Falafel the graffitti thing seems like a gimmic.
"digital graffiti tool?"
I can't imagine it replacing the real deal.
It seems pointless.
How does a trigger vary from an aerosol button?
Keep up the good work.

what do we use a spray can app for...?
I am not going to talk to anyone specific here, because the criticism voiced above is either just plain flamebait or born of blatant fanboyism.
The Wii and its control scheme is clearly the biggest innovation in gaming since Nintendo invented the traditional controller, held with both hands. If it wasn't as important an innovation, both of Nintendo's competitors would not be rushing to copy it.
Being a game journalist, I am bound to impartiality and non-bias, of course. I could talk for hours about how Sony revolutionized third party relations with the PlayStation or how Microsoft set the bar for online gaming on a console. When it comes to controls, though, Nintendo reigns supreme, once again.
Whether it's harmless family fun (´Wii Sports´), shooters (´Metroid Prime 3´, ´James Bond: Quantum of Solace´) or downright nasty brutality (´The Godfather: Blackhand Edition´, ´Manhunt 2´, ´MadWorld´) the Wii's controls are a huge step towards making gaming more realistic and towards immersing the player in the gaming experience. If you don't see that, you obviously don't know much about gaming or are a fanboy. Being a fanboy and, for example, disregarding Nintendo products is fine by me. But you people should top preaching your preferences as gospel. It is not.
That was the basics. Now onto the details. As far as the spray can shell is concerned, it may simply become another controller shell that will rot in your shelf after ten minutes of use. There are many examples of such controllers. But it's still far too early to judge this one. It looks like it may have interchangeable caps and a decent application. So let's wait a little longer, shall we?
Okay, time to talk to the reasonable people here ;)
Hi Silwer.
I really hope that Nintendo contact these passionate people, and award them with a offer to bring it officaly to Wii-users.
I am sure that there has been industry interest in the device, but the inventor cannot say as of yet. I hope he will be able to divulge more info soon.
Hi Ansis.
First of all, I very much agree with everything you said there. I wouldn't want to play 'Star Wars: Force Unleashed´ on any other console and I wouldn't want to play ´The Godfather: Blackhand Edition´ on any other system either. At the same time, I wouldn't want to miss playing ´Grand Theft Auto IV´ and I am greatly looking forward to ´Resident Evil 5´.
It's not alway the market leader who gets all the good games. There will always be titles on another system that you will want to play. Last generation, the PS2 was the system of choice, but ´Eternal Darkness´ and ´Halo´ alone were compelling enough reasons to own all three platforms.
Falafel the graffitti thing seems like a gimmic.
"digital graffiti tool?"
I can't imagine it replacing the real deal.
It seems pointless.
How does a trigger vary from an aerosol button?
And hi NZ Guy
what do we use a spray can app for...?
Like I said, it's not a given that this idea will make sense. But the inventor has big plans for the projects:
I`m planning to build a new spraycan with more functionsand also an advanced software with collaborative spraying option, different caps, different colours…. and maybee different Sprayers make an appointment and create grafitties together: online! The communication will take place by the picture and will be videochatsupported.
Like I said, let's wait a little and see where this goes. Think about the next generation of ´Jet Set Radio´, with online multiplayer perhaps. That would be a cool idea.
So let me get this straight, Kony and Pero Detlic: you think the Wii is a gimmick, a toy, and a piece of crap because Nintendo wants to create a system that appeals to a whole new group of people and broaden the horizon for the gaming industry? So are you saying old people and middle-aged parents shouldn't play video games, and that it should be exclusive to people like you guys? You guys are too hardcore for the Guitar Hero crowd, huh? What do you guys do with your Wii's, pick up chicks with it or something.
I have a better idea, Kony and Pero Detlic, instead of annoying Nintendo, with your stalker-like mentality, to intimidate them to do what you want them to do, why don't you behave the way you guys are acting in this comment section in front of those "casual gamers," you feel don't deserve to play games, so that they don't buy a Wii. I mean if you want the gaming industry to be a utopia where it only revolves around you guys and others who think like you, why don't you show them what the industry is full of: annoying, zealous, immature, and outrageously psychotic fanboys. Yes, with people like Kony and Pero Detlic, why would any actual mature person be into gaming in the first place. Perhaps you two really need to get together and join a cadre of 8-year-olds who argue with their mothers over a chocolate milk on Xbox Live because for a couple of guys saying the Wii is a toy, you sure are childish.
Yeah, I'm a fanboy, a Nintendo fanboy who doesn't like the Wii because it's a piece of shit. I don't hate all of Nintendo's products, falafelkid; I grew up with the NES. All I want to see is Nintendo to become great again, succeed with substantive value like they have in the past. They didn't need to succeed by putting out useless and unnecessary gimmicks like the Wii. I remember when games were the only thing that made or break the system, not the overabundance of accessories that will never be used. I thought the Wii was supposed to give developers some room to display unique ideas, but they end up giving us terrible ports and High School Musical. All the real efforts are dedicated to crap like WiiSpray, which will hardly be used, so in part, wouldn't that make it a gimmick?
Nintendo has become a laughing stock amongst the gaming community, all the while still getting embarassing games like Bratz Babies. Nintendo has never shown an ounce of concern for how much dignity and worth they're losing over this cheap console. Core games are practically non-existant. Mark my words, the Wii will never succeed for long, and it will degrade into a fad.
Kony.
You are a fanboy, no doubt. But not a Nintendo one. Like I said, it's fine. Sony and Microsoft have changed the industry in some very important aspects. Just don't pretend you actually care for Nintendo or view them without bias, like I do. That's laughable, given the rubbish you are writing. Oh, and:
Mark my words, the Wii will never succeed for long, and it will degrade into a fad
I am going to say this for a third time now and I hope you finally take this in:
Both Sony and Microsoft are rushing to copy the Wiimote. And having your entire competition up in arms copying your product is the ultimate proof that you shook up an entire industry and changed it for the better.
I also don't care how many times you mention the ´High School Musical´ game. Because you don't seem to know that you can buy this one for PSP, PS2, and PS3 as well.
It's true, though, that the market leader gets shovelware. That's always been the case. The NES and SNES suffered from it, the PlayStation and PS2 suffered from it. Now, it's the Wii's turn. But you are forgetting about the cream of the crop.
Saying that Wii is a kiddie console with no more than casual and kiddie games is the best way of embarrassing yourself. Because the Wii portfolio bears 15 survival horror titles, six of which are exclusive, among them big franchises like ´Resident Evil´ (three games) and ´House of the Dead´ (two games). With ´MadWorld´ and ´Manhunt 2´, the Wii also has the two most violent and controversial videogames on offer this generation. And there are plenty of straightforward action games like ´Ghost Squad´ that easily beat most action on other consoles.
I shouldn't have to mention less violent AAA titles like ´Metroid Prime 3´ or the more casually compatible stuff like ´WarioWare´ or ´Big Brain Academy´ which to me as a hardcore gamer are all fantastic titles I would not want to miss.
So, please, don't make a bigger fool out of yourself than you already have. Just leave, mate.
You don't know how many Nintendo fans, like myself, are pissed off with the Wii. Take a look at the comments section at the GoNintendo blog! Nintendo has been selling nothing but turd for the useless casual gaming crowd. They're selling themselves out to them like whores. They don't seem to care about the core gamers who made them in the first place.
Oh, and those "survival horror" titles, yeah ports, a mini-game (MadWorld), and light gun shit. Boy, have developers been oh so lazy with the Wii. Nobody wants to play any of those games because they've already played them on the last-gen consoles. Light gun has been dead with the slow decline of arcades. Nice try.
- Kony
i don't have problem with wiiremote.. it's fine, i like it, its innovative and all
but no more stupid shells! no more mini games. bring on some real games so i can actually USE wiiremote
funny, two best wii games, brawl and galaxy, would be playable just fine without wiiremote
My little Kony.
ports, a mini-game (MadWorld), and light gun shit.
I suspected you'd embarrass yourself even more than you already did - and you were happy to oblige. Well done!
Light gun has been dead with the slow decline of arcades.
Sorry, I did't get the memo. I wasn't supposed to have those tons of fun with my Zapper? I really must apologize for enjoying all those shooters on Wii, I guess. What a completely ignorant statement there, mate. Is ´Grand Theft Auto´ passé as well? Should I apologize for playing that great game too?
Pray tell, what is your learned opinion on the competitors' portfolios? Snubbing at exclusive titles like ´Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles´ and ´MadWorld´, you surely frown upon ´Gears of War´ or ´Metal Gear Solid 4´ too, I trust.
Or if you are more of a graphics whore, then surely you pitied all those 110 million fools that bought the least powerful console last generation by a long shot, a little box called the PlayStation2.
pero_detlic.
i don't have problem with wiiremote.. it's fine, i like it, its innovative and all
but no more stupid shells! no more mini games. bring on some real games so i can actually USE wiiremote

Okay, you are talking very rationally here. I understand your concerns and share some of them. You need not worry about a lack of games that make good use of the Wiimote, though. By now, there is something in every genre (with the possible exception of RPGs, I guess) which features the Wiimote in a meaningful and immersive way.
But, like I already said, there are a number of controller shells that are doomed to gather dust after fifteen minutes of use. My fishing controller is not exactly in heavy use, of course.
But what exactly are you complaining about? The Dreamcast had a number of peripherals and noone complained about that. So did the PlayStation2. Just think about GameTrak *shudder*. You don't have to buy them, you know? I really think that your criticism is not based on reason but simply the public perception of the Wii, which leaves a lot to be desired in most cases.
sorry mr falafel but I somewhat share the same feelings as that "kony" guy which shouldnt come as a surprise to you
(he almnost seems like a reincranation of me doesnt he ;-)))
well anyway, as kony mentioned theres simply A LOT of BULLSHITTERY going on Wii and Ninty doesn't seem too bothered about it......yeah yeah I know I know ...theres is no reason for them to change their direction etc etc. ....I understand with wii they are reaching for a wider audience and they are extremely successful with their approach but it simply leaves us core gamers in the mist....I persoanlly dont think you are the core gamer type of guy..I might be wrong but I can't imagine you sitting in front of a TV playing true hardcore games like Okami, Prime etc for hours on end...you are more the casual gamer type of guy, playing games more on occasion..at least thats my impression from reading your blog for over 3 years and seeing your responses.....am I right?
Anyway the thing is when you look at it from a core gamer's perspective then the line up seems like a bad joke compared to what the cpompetition offers-
I mean falafel come on seriously lets face it: You don't win the hardcore core gamer crowds over with PS 2/Cube ports they played before like Godfather, Scarface, Okami, Driver 3, Farcry, Bully, Resi 4, Manhunt 2, Death Jr, Zelda etc.
Some of those games might be good but they simply do not count since they have been there before in some form or another - thus, you'd be a fool if you took all those games into account when judging the Wii line up.....
And now lets take look at the exclusives:
We have:
- Umbrella Chronicles - a low budget mainfranchise spin off, period
- Zack and Wiki - low budget game with some clever puzzle design - gets extremely frustrating and unfair towards the end with the most illogical puzzle I have ever encountered in my entire life...simply laughable if Capcom expects me to think in such nonsensial pathetic patterns
- Red Steel - Rush Job with horrible controlls and "okay" presentation- could have been so much more.
- Metroid Prime 3 - good game but hopelessly inferior to its predecessors, to Prime 1 in particular...lacks a lot of the depth and polish which made the first one a milestone and an instant classic to begin with- oversimplified weaponsystem - still has its moments in skytown to be fair though
-first Wii Sonic - horrible game
- Galaxy and Zelda: Both are great games without a doubt but as Miyamoto himself statet he felt llike something was missing from the games and that they were not "new" enough...I shared the same feelings upon finishing both games mysels(I have obtained almost 240 stars with Mario and luigi btw)
- Smash Brothers :
Gamecube game with higher rez textures - got the EA treatment :-))
-Soulcalibur legends:
Shitty low budget spin off of a classic series
- Disaster day of crysis
Extremly lame redundant game lacking a true direction and a solid execution amongst other things that make up a good exclusive game
and then we have the multiplatform releases with Wii always getting the most crappy version.. with low rez unoptimmized graphics like Quantum Of Solace and tacked on controlls.
AND BTW Falafel since you mentioned Quantum Of Solace - just because the games are there doesn't make the line up better-if said games and the wii versions respectively are widely considered as utter rushed crap. 95% of all multiplatform releases are best played on either PS3 or 360 since they are simply more polished on the other systems.
And thats it basically and so what we are left with is a bunch of super bad quickygimmicky games like marykate and ashleys guitar petz, donkey's magical banana conquest and wini poohs high school musical express;-)) (you get the picture) that are aimed at grandparents, girls, and lil kids. as you can see theres not much to drool over from core gamers point of view.
Seriously, Mr falafel compared to the 360/PS3 Wii's core gamer line up is simply laughable. And that's simple cold hard fact. And lf you are too stubborn and biased too acknowledge that you are simply rejecting reality.
With that said lookin into to the future I'm a little more optimistic that it might change soon with games on the horizon like MH3,Tenchu4, Cursed Mountain, Overkill, Conduit,F5 and hopefully Red Steel 2.
Bottom line is the hardcore gamers might have become a minority and Nintendo has never been as successful as now by broadening the market with casual software.... however if they want to win over the core gamers hearts once and for all, they need to address 3rd party support big time and offer deeper core content themselves.
Dein Liebling ;-))

HOLY SHIT!!!!!
I PROMISE YOU I'LL REREAD MY STUFF AND DO A SPELL CHECK BEFORE I EVER POST AGAIN!!!
that was so poorly written it doesn't get much worse..lol..... its almost like a wii port....now you know how a Wii port feels like to hardcore gamers Mr Falafel
;-))))

"And there are plenty of straightforward action games like ´Ghost Squad´ that easily beat most action on other consoles."
OMGLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLOOOOOOOOOLOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOLOOOOOOOOOLOOOOOOOOOOL
excuse me but that made me laugh so hard :-))
Jeeesus, mr falafel, I hate to tell you that but please edit that out for your own good. I really hope you were joking when you said that because if you weren't I don't think anyone will ever take you seriously again after reading that line...man....that line was serious amen tear out!!!
IALS
Falafelkid, what the hell are you talking about? I complimented Grand Theft Auto series as one of the games that most people want to play unlike complete shovelware library that continues to infest the Wii. Just because you enjoy it doesn't make it a good system. I'm sure there are idiots who enjoy the 32X and Virtua Boy for the same reasons. "Oooooo, you can use a visor instead of a TV set," or "ooooo, it's not a stand-alone system." The Wii is a piece of shit, with shitty titles and shitty gimmicks! It's obvious, with IALS and Pero Detlic, that I'm not the only Nintendo fan who has spoken out against it. The Wii sucks, and Nintendo needs to make a system that appeals to a group of people that matters in the gaming industry.
- Kony
My little Kony.
Your loopy comments have entertained me to such a degree that I am awarding you the official title of village idiot of this blog. Congratulations (and apologies to the former bearer of this title who is now unemployed).
The Wii sucks, and Nintendo needs to make a system that appeals to a group of people that matters in the gaming industry.
You're such a laugh, mate! Until one year ago, you were probably raving that Wii would never attract the majority of gamers. Now that it has, you are saying that it is the wrong kind of majority. Funny, funny stuff. But that's where those many years of hard training in professional lunacy really pay off. Again, well done.
It has not attracted the majority of gamers. The only thing the Wii has attracted are nobodies, casual "gamers." They aren't real gamers and they don't play real games. Solitare on Windows wouldn't qualify a game and a person who plays it doesn't qualify as a gamer, so it would be false to consider them as such. The only thing the Wii has attracted is are compost heaps of shit!
Wii fails!!
- Kony
It has not attracted the majority of gamers.
Muhahahaha. That is the best line from you yet, my little phoney. That's like saying that Ferrari sells mainly to people who don't have a driving license.
Not selling Wii to gamers? What are they using it for then? Oh, you are such a laugh, mate! Keep going.
The Wii is not a gaming system, it is a piece of shit because of the low processing power that prevents developers from making real games.
Wii fails!!
- Kony
My little phoney.
The Wii is not a gaming system, it is a piece of shit because of the low processing power that prevents developers from making real games.
Let's take your argument back one generation, shall we?
The PlayStation2 is not a gaming system, it is a piece of shit because of the low processing power that prevents developers from making real games.
Oops. You didn't mean to say that, did you? Or are you suggesting the PS2 shows what the future holds in store for Wii? Oh my...!
Ok, I don't know who is the real village idiot, but it looks like your reading comprehension hasn't advanced a jot.
The last generation's processing power gap wasn't that big. The PS2, while relatively underpowered, was almost as capable as the Xbox and Gamecube because there were no differences when you compare games from all three last-gen systems. This generation has a monsterous gap where the Wii is completely outdated and haven't advanced at all where developers are in the confines of its liimited resources and forced to develop shitty games. No quality is possible on the Wii, as a result and Nintendo, once again, has shot themselves in the foot!
Wii fails!!
- Kony
There were no differences when you compare games from all three last-gen systems.
With exclusive titles, there was often a huge gap. Less so with cross-platform titles because they were simple ports. Noone bothered developing multi-platform titles for each console. Multi-platform titles looked the same because the PS2 dragged the standard down to its level.
I mean, the low graphics memory bandwidth plagued developers for the console's entire lifetime. And the PlayStation3 isn't exactly the developer's darling, either. Of course, you knowing nothing about videogames wouldn't know that, my little phoney.
But it's still better than the Wii's limited shit. Developers still many to work with.
Wii fails!!
- Kony
Ok, I forgot "have" in that sentence. But, still, there are absolutely no resources with the Wii.
Wii fails!!
- Kony
My little phoney.
Ok, I forgot "have" in that sentence.
That still does not render your ramblings a complete sentence. Ever heard of an object? Probably not, since you are the antithesis of objectivity.
We will not forget of which Sony's commercial layout will GW2 Gemsbe popular along with the first couple of PlayStations along with the Twin Great shock controller work best illustrations for that. These people were certainly the very best hunting gaming systems Diablo III goldof their age group.
