Wii has outsold the Xbox360 in all territories making Nintendo overall market leader in the current-generation console market, the Financial Times reports. Numbers may be slightly distorted, however, since the Japanese figures include an additional month.
According to data to the end of July (the end of August in Japan), people have bought 9m Wiis, 8.9m Xbox units and 3.7m PS3s.
The data is based on sales figures from Enterbrain in Japan, NPD Group of the US and GfK of Germany, which tracks European sales.
Predictions turn out true
In early August I predicted that Wii was only days away from the number one spot. Two weeks later, Nintendo officially won Germany.
Then, only days ago, the above figures started to appear on various forums, linking to a Nikkei report in Japanese. I was unable to verify the story beyond a reasonable doubt. But now we have confirmation.
No console above 10 million
What is interesting is that these sell-through figures differ greatly from both the predictions of Videogame Charts and NexGen Wars, who both put Wii and Xbox360 at well above ten million units.
Figures distorted?
It should also be said that only including the month of August for Japan distorts the figures to the point where Wii´s lead becomes questionable. Let us turn to Videogame Charts for weekly sales estimates.
Each week, Nintendo sells just less than 38.000 Wii consoles in Japan, making for roughly 150.000 units each month. Meanwhile, Xbox360 sold 1.700 consoles last week, making for slightly more than 6.700 units per month. If you deduct those estimates from the above figures, Xbox360 still has a very slim lead.
No significant distortion
I recommend disregarding this aspect, however, because the difference would be less than 50.000 units (which must be within the statistical error margin) and it is only a matter of weeks before the Wii will have established a clear lead.

Worth playing on metroid visuals lol
Never heard no bs like this before:
"Metroid Prime 3: Corruption's graphics are a difficult thing to judge. In all honesty, the graphics themselves are not particularly impressive. The models are slight improvements over the ones found in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, but it's hard to be as impressed as one was back when Echoes was released. Furthermore, there are a few cases of really terrible model work. The few times that Samus removes her helmet, the facial model is absolutely terrible, complete with stiff, block hair that would have been embarrassing on the PlayStation 2. While the actual graphics are simply passable, the detail and effort put into the environments and effects are fantastic. Enemies react in different ways depending on how you fight them, melting under the plasma beam or dissolving into ash if killed by a Metroid. Simple effects, like water falling on Samus' visor in a damp cave or the way a barrier slowly melts under sustained weapons fire, do wonders in making the worlds that Samus explores feel actually alive."
ha ha utterly confused and contradicting
ouch

It took 13 years for the "King of Gaming" to return to his throne, but what a return it is!
Moments like this you have to let soak in, you never know what the future holds. The tyranny of the "S" and the new guy "M" may return...
Not to boast not to brag but honestly...
ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME!
Nintendo is back baby!!!
This is me---> :D
falaffel, i thought you would be smarter than this
Vgchartz covers worldwide data not only Japan, US and germany.
'The data is based on sales figures from Enterbrain in Japan, NPD Group of the US and GfK of Germany, which tracks European sales.'
so this leaves us, the rest of europe (including UK, which is bigger market than germany) Canada, Southern Americas, australia, etc etc
I was reading lately an interview of Igrashi san who said that although wii has a very big installed base he is concidering making games for the 360 because 3rd party games sell there better then on wii.
So although wii is incredibly successful 3rd parties are still very very luke warm about it, remember the comments of that sega guy?
Now I take a look at the 360 library and I got baffeld away..
ironically Microsoft is supporting video games which I would concider as art.
Bioshock, Gears of war, the new game from Bioware, Xbox Live arcade... etc etc..
In now am I a Microsoft fan, I use linux on my machine.. But seeing what they have on their list makes me wonder if after 16 years of Nintendo my next machine will be a 360 and not a Wii..
I am NOT a Microsoft fan ;)
excuse my penslip ;)
Given the latest August NPD numbers it seems that Wii's lead is already growing significantly...
That said, those very same numbers continue to paint a rather bleak picture for third-parties--that is, the lack of Madden 08 Wii is somewhat disturbing...
Oh, and Worth Playing simply ain't worth reading.

Heh I'd slit my wrists if I ever made that error.

How could Wii's lead be questionable? Microsoft's number includes every console which has reached the customer, which includes "Red Ring of Death" replacement units. Conservative estimates place the failure rate of the 360 at 15-20%.
If they're saying they've delivered 8.9 million 360s to customers, then that gives them an installed base between 7.1 and 7.6 million consoles.
Not only has Nintendo delivered more consoles to the end user, their defect rate is significantly lower. This means that the race isn't anywhere near as close as the published numbers indicate... Nintendo is easily ahead by more than a million consoles.
Yikes, the fanboyism in this blog's comments can get pretty severe, but I guess that's to be expected.
It's interesting to know that the numbers are this high, but I won't be particularily happy about it until it translates into more of the "hardcore" variety of games. Certainly, Metroid, Galaxy, and Smash Bros is an awesome step towards that (and possibly the upcoming medal of honour game as well), but publishers are still lagging behind the system's popularity.
Hopefully next year will be better... though to be honest, I don't have too much to complain about. Metroid Prime was awesome, Smash Bros is shaping up to be a real treat in time for Christmas, and to fill the gap there's always Halo 3 and Mass Effect.
I was unable GW2 Goldto verify the story beyond a reasonable doubt.Buy RS Gold But now we have confirmation.
