Nintendo becomes market leader in Germany

Nintendo has claimed market leadership of the home console market in Germany. The German financial newspaper €uro am Sonntag cites industry insiders who in turn cite the following sales figures from the ´Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung (GfK)´:

Wii: 291.000

Xbox360: 281.000

PS3: 99.500

Monthly sales in July paint a clear picture of the current trend:

Wii: 26.000

Xbox360: 5.000

PS3: 8.000

I recently estimated on the basis of current Videogame Charts figures that Nintendo also just snatched worlwide market leadership in the home console market. The GfK figures should be regarded as more reliable, though.

EDIT At the Games Convention, I confronted SCED´s head of PR, Uwe Bassendowski, with the above figures. He gave me the GfK´s weekly figures (13th - 19th of August):

Wii: 8.000

Xbox360: 1.300

PS3: 5.500

PS2: 7.500

He insisted on adding the PS2 numbers, saying that in overall hardware sales Sony was the clear market leader and sold the most consoles right now.

  4. Nice to see the comeback of
nintendo. Before the ds and the wii I believed Nintendo would eventually go the same way as Sega. But the guts to go a different path of innovation than the competition and the inspiration to use technology previously never used in handheld/console gaming brought the Nintendo company deservedly back on the topspot.
The real big games haven't even been released on the Wii this year. I wonder what impact a game like metroid prime 3 could have on the sales of the nintendo wii.

  5. Sweet! It's so difficult to find new on European sales, so any scrap of news in that regard is welcome.

But this is shocking. I never knew that even in Europe, the XBox 360 had hit such a brick wall in terms of sales. Maybe the price barrier is very, very, real the world over, and maybe most markets just can't be expected to pay that much for HD graphics.

Nintendo really called it this generation.

  8. **** Metroid Prime 3 nicer with new engine? and what Retro should have done to give Corruption a new look*****

Could Metroid Prime 3 look better with a new engine instead?hmmm...I don't know....I'd say it could.. but the question is at what cost? a new engine probably would have taken up more time. Would it be out by now then? and would it feature the same level of polish?...whos to say?

Nonetheless...the thing is..you know....Lets face it..despite all the graphical upgrades like better particle effects, bloom lighting, more polygons, robust textures, etc. Corruption still looks a lot like it predecessors from a visual standpoint at the end of the day. And while improvements are definetly visible, they still remain kinda subtle. It still looks like something that you'd expect on Cube. Now, don't get me wrong the art direction and general level design is still sublime thanks to Retros skilled artists, but technologywise I can't argue on the fact that it "awfully" resembles its predecessors visually like 1Up tartly put it. But what really is beyond comprehension for me is why for instance they haven't toyed with the idea of updating the Samus weapon and character model design since the first Prime. That alone would have worked wonders in regards to the look. It would have given this sequel a newer, fresher look compared to the first two. And that's the thing, you know, on one hand you have all these superbly designed, complex, multi layered environments but on the other hand, you still got the exact same gun from 5 years ago and the exact same Samus character model designwise that even back then I thought wasn't doing justice to the sensible, edgy design of the environments.

I still remember how a friend of mine(xbox gamer)who I showed the first Prime was immediately put off after seing the green gun at the very beginning...you know...just by the looks of it!!!he was like "why is that gun green, it looks like a toygun for kids, why isn't it grey metal? " or something. You get the picture. It's really strange. You have all these talented artists and designers building exemplary imaginative levels and creatures yet somehow they do not consider for a second to remodel...you know...to update the essential elements you see on screen in order to convey that new look, that visual freshness that is so sorely needed (from a first impression). Those are things that Retro could have easily incorporated to differentiate 3 from 1 and 2 visually.

Maybe he should have played the game to find out that you constanly get upgrades to the weapon. At the end the weapon and the suit have a pretty badass metallic black look.

"why for instance they haven't toyed with the idea of updating the Samus weapon and character model design since the first Prime"

I guess most Metroid Prime fans like her suit like it is and since the suit and the weapon are usually upgradable, i think there will be optical upgrades to it too...
