´Metroid Prime 3: Corruption´ earns massive praise

First reviews of ´Metroid Prime 3: Corruption´ are full of praise for what is emerging as the must-have title for the Wii console. Metacritic notes a score of 95. And check the Gametrailers review, who awarded the game a 96:

Here are some of the comments from the above review:

"The four or five hours leading up to this [the finale] are some of the greatest moments in gaming ever burnt onto a disc."

"It [the game] proves that there is no better control option on any console."

"You´ll never want to play another shooter with dual analogue sticks ever again. It´s that good."

"Playing Metroid Prime 3 can be a near-religious experience."

"It can hold its own against any title on any other platform."

"The original Metroid Prime is one of the highest rated games in existence. But ´Metroid Prime 3: Corruption´ is easily superior."

Also, here is IGN´s video review (including some spoilers), which is only slightly more critical with a score of 95.

Finally, while Gamespot´s review is due next week the site offers plenty of gameplay videos. So does 1UP, who gave the game 90 marks.

I have already given you some brief impressions from my hands-on last week. I guess there is little to add to the above reviews.

EDIT Actually, Gamespot just published their review. They did write that it was forthcoming next week, but that was last week, so here it is. They are even more critical than IGN and awarded the game an 85.

GamePro also gave the game an 85, dragging the Metacritic average down to 91.

I am not arguing the greatness of Retro Studio's versions of the Metroid franchise.

But is it just me or does the art direction seem completly something non Metroid?
I always thought that the Prime series doesn't look at all like the old Metroid games (aside from Samus and her suit)
From the new creatures to the music and the backround textures....
None of it resembles the old games very much.
I don't mean more details and polygons either.
It just doesn't feel very Metroid to me.

Super Metroid till remains my favorite of the series.
Till then this is just an excellent first shooter that happens to have brief glimpses of Samus and her suit.(with an unusually widely praised auto lock on shoot for me cause I cant aim feature)
Am I wrong or does anyone agree with me?

The art style I can maybe agree with you on, but the music is pretty much exactly what I would expect for a 3-D Metroid. Super Metroid's still my favorite too, but Prime is a very close second. Can't say anything about Corruption until tomorrow though~

@Granpaw

I just recently started to play Super Metroid, only my second Metroid experience (besides Hunters) after Prime. It's funny that you think that Prime series doesn't look and feel like the old Metroids, bc after about 10 min playing Super Metroid i thought that it really feels pretty much like Metroid Prime in 2D...

I guess: different people = different point of view :-)

Gamespot gave the game a 8.5 claiming it's hardly fresh and lacking online play among other somewhat nit picky reasons they came up with to critizise the game.....an odd rating to say the least, as it is simply not in line with the majority of other review scores. Like earlier overly critical Wii reviews this one doesn't seem to add up either. The mostly positive text does not reflect the rating..look...the thing is...there is indication imo that Gamespot is biased...I've been following Gamespot reviews for many years -while I found the Zelda rating to be somewhat appropriate as the style and theme mirrored Ocarina Of Time rather sobering- and it didn't went unnoticed when all of a sudden they started giving Nintendo games unreasonably bad ratings for incomprehendable nitpicky reasons...fishy indeed....

Funnily, a comparison between their God Of War 2 and Corruption reviews vividly confirms the suspicion:

God Of War 2 got a 9.2 rating and Metroid a 8.5 from Gamespot.

But the thing is, God Of War 2 doesn't do anything different in terms of gameplay ...like Metroid, it's "just more of the same" if you will...so that's already something that doesn't add up..why would you give Metroid a lower rating than God Of War 2 for lack of freshness when in reality God Of War 2 is just as similiar to its predecessor gameplay and design wise?

What's even more puzzling though is that the graphical presentation in GOW2 isn't improved to the same degree as the presentaion in Prime 3 appears to be from what I've seen so far...again, neither from a design standpoint nore technology wise, so consequently why would you
give Metroid a lower score there compared to GOW2???

Furthermore, Prime 3 clearly has the new controlls going for it...the people over at gamespot seem to completely brush this substantial feature -which further improves and differentiates Corruption from its predecessors- under the carpet as it clearly doesn't affect their rating..that's beyond comprehension....SO to conclude: God Of War 2 doesn't have new, innovative controlls! God Of War 2 doesn't have the visual edge over Corruption and
GOF 2 certainly doesn't reinvent the wheel in any way and I very much doubt that GOW2 is more fun than Prime3..so why does Gamespot give it a better score than Prime 3?..

This comparison only confirms what many people suspected ever since their weird, overly critical reviews started showing up namely that Gamespot is up to no good.

The 360 doesn't have the motion sensitive controller, which could be a reason for them saying "perfect controls." They can only say that in relation to the other 360 FPS's. However, I'm not defending their Metriod Prime 3 score; I haven't played yet but with the other great scores and the quality of the other two games I'm sure it deserved higher than 85. Gamespot does seem to be biased a bit when scoring Nintendo games.

gamespot is a piece of shit.

ials: i was afraid that metroid would come out and you'd be back to your usual shit-talking. i'm glad to find that's not the case. thanks for accepting the facts on this one. next up: mario galaxy.
i like your take on the gamespot reviews too. it's the first time i've found myself agreeing with you in ages. good show.

-"superfan" tactics.

GamePro shouldn't count, and Gamespot sucks ass. Bioshock is a great game, but it's not a five point difference between it and MP:3. Also, the comments for cons anre ridiculous:

"Some of the contextual actions don't control all that well": Maybe you just don't know how to control a remote, dumbass

"Streamlined controls make things a little too easy and a little less adventurous": 'Slick controls make game easy, dur, make game unplayable harder get higher score, dur.'

"Doesn't do much different than the previous two Metroid Prime games": Halo 2 did dual-wielding and let you play as a crappy alien. WHAT A DEPARTURE FROM HALO 1 OMG.

Biased. SOOOOOO biased.

We need a Swiss review group.

I can attest, the game is that good, and I'm not even a quarter done yet!

It really shows how poor Red Steel's controls actually were. I can only hope that other FPS developers for Wii use Metroid Prime as the standard...
