10 million Wiis sold, top console by next week
Nintendo´s Wii has broken through the significant barrier of 10 million units sold worldwide, according to Videogame Charts. At the current pace, Wii will become the top console by August 19th. Let me talk you through it.
Currently, Wii is a mere 290.000 units away from claiming the top spot. In Japan, Wii has sold 70.765 units more than the Xbox360 last week. In the US, the number was 56.941 and in Europe we are looking at a weekly surplus of 46.855 units.
Add those figures up and you find that Wii is closing the gap on Xbox360 by 174.561 units every week. At that pace, it will take 1,66 weeks for Wii to level with its competitor. That would be around the end of next week, say Sunday, 19th of August.
EDIT Actually, the current sales figures have already gone down to a difference of only 220.000, reducing the time span to 1,26 weeks. This equates to one week and around 1,75 days - so expect Nintendo to claim the throne between Friday 17th and Saturday 18th.
EDIT By the way, according to the NexGenWars figures, the difference between Wii and Xbox360 is still 1,20 million units. Hence Nintendo would be market leader within 6,89 weeks - around the first week of October.

I remember sometime last year when the editors at IGN decided not to include the WII in an group editorial on the future of video gaming.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it will be that soon since the 360's price drop will no doubt get more units off the shelf.
ReplyDeleteYou'd be surprised, Anonymous. I've sold a total of zero 360s since the price drop, much like the PS3. Something tells me that it will stay close to that way until Halo 3 hits... and even then I question the number of 360s that'll go out the door. Halo pushed a good number of XBoxes into consumers' hands, but I'm wondering if the 360 will just be selling Halo to the consumer this time. Many current owners bought a 360 with the promise of Halo 3, so it's possible that the sales spike from Halo could be disappointingly small (compared to our expectations).
ReplyDeleteYou just cant count on Halo to sell a console. Sure microsoft has a good handful of titles coming out by the end of the year but not all of them are exclusive to the system and the new GTA wont be out until next year now. Also people you have to remember Wii has a bigger demographic than anyother console its just that simple. Wii will overtake 360 soon and when the BIG three hit I think we will see a bigger amount of Wii's being sold especially running upto christmas.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of the holidays I wonder who will make the no.1 topspot for christmas toy? id say its between the DS and Wii....lol Then after christmas when people want to diet for the new year they will go crazy for WiiFit for sure!
I still want a 360, there are loads of great games on it now and even more are coming. More than I got my eye for on the Wii, that's for sure:
ReplyDeleteWii - Mario, Smash, Metroid, RE: UC and Ghost Squad, maybe even the japanese lighgun/sword action game. If a new version of Star Soldier actually is in the making, it would be very interesting. There are a few more titles, but nothing that compares to the 360's upcoming lineup (I don't think I have to mention all those games)..
Good news nonetheless, it means good games will be coming (at some point) as publishers turn their attention towards the Wii.
Oh and the DS has a great lineup.
ReplyDeletehalo 3 is obsolete compared to metroid prime 3 and future wii fps games
ReplyDeletei see no point in 360s existance AT ALL its obsolete as a games console and rubbish as a computer
wii plus a pc/mac = COMMONSENCE
BUYING A PS3 OR 360 = BLIND TWAT OF A CONSUMER
SORRY THATS NOT JUST MY OPINION THATS A FACT
I never even mentioned Halo 3. In fact I havn't got much positive to say about Halo. But if you can't appreciate the great titles coming to the 360, youre not much of a gamer. I'm not going to make a list for you - if you don't know about other upcoming games for the 360 than Halo 3, well then that's just a pity for you.
ReplyDeleteBe a fanboy all you want but you'll miss out on some great games.
I agree. Anyone who says the PS3/360 are useless in the industry are either hitting the celebratory dega-bong too hard, or they're just in denial. I'm a happy Wii owner, but I'm also looking into a 360 for titles like Blue Dragon, Bioshock, and Resident Evil 5. It's impossible for a gamer to really enjoy the full spectrum of games if s/he doesn't have access to a majority of the titles. But what do I know? I'm just an enthusiast. :)
ReplyDeleteOr, don't buy a 360 and wait for those games to come out on Wii... ; )
ReplyDeleteSeriously, what a year! Gratz to all gamers, Nintendo is back.
360 can go and jump, I dont see much point MS being in the industry.
ReplyDeletePS3 on the other hand if it becomes affordable will be a worthwhile purchase. SCEJ/SCEA and its 2nd parties make good games, cant say much for MS. Just keep them on PC where they are better suited IMO.
I'd rather play "Colin Mcrae: Dirt" on a 360 than on the PC. For instance. The only games I prefer on a PC are generally FPS (which seem to have a great future on the Wii) and strategy games (which also could work great on the Wii), most other games are more comfortable to play on a console.
ReplyDeleteA quick off-topic note: Is the man formerly known as the Angry Nintendo Nerd ripping me off?
ReplyDeletei'm sure he bought that from t-shirt hell or something, dude. it's a stupid shirt anyways.
ReplyDelete-"superfan" tactics.
Fuckballs? Fuck balls? Terrible t-shirt anyway, but Jesus does he look intimidating! Flames and all. I'd cross the street if I ever saw him.
ReplyDeleteWow the Wii is set to take the lead in under a year...congrats Nintendo!
ReplyDeletewhat a heb that dude is, and cross the street? why i'd walk right upto him and laugh in his face for being a fool
ReplyDeleteoh sorry for the double post i thought some of you would find this interesting, apparently i have been banned from joystiq for not sharing the same opinion as one of there bloggers and not tolerating having my posts deleted and kept reposting them, mind you they were not offensive in anyway, mind you they didnt just ban my account they banned my ip range when i made an attempt to let it be known that Jared Rae deletes and edits user comments.
ReplyDeletealso it will be Nice to see Nintendo take the #1 spot again, and to whoever said it, the 360 definitely is not useless there are many good games on it already and many to come, at the moment it is much more a gaming machine than the PS3.

Oh Wow Falafelkid! Just saw your posts in that NeoGAF sales thread. I've lurked there for a couple of months and believe me, you were THIS CLOSE to getting banned, lol. You're lucky they allowed you some slack, because as soon as you linked to this story with its VGChartz numbers I though "oh dear god he's dead."
ReplyDeleteIt seems a pretty tough forums to break into. They have a lot of odd traditions and rules that newbies often run afoul of. Additionally, I think a lot of industry people go there but don't reveal their true identity, so they're not all sheep like the typical internet forums.

Please don't even dignify NGW's numbers with a mention. Their collective heads are buried so far up Microsoft's ass it's not even funny.
ReplyDeleteA mere 20,000 consoles now separate the two. I think that's about how many 360's fail in two months.
ReplyDeleteMicrosoft manufacturing game consoles???
ReplyDeleteI Cant Get Behind That :)
