Wii´s ´last secret´ to be revealed in September?

Nintendo of America president Reginald Fils-Aime has hinted at a surprise announcement regarding the Wii within two months, according to Infendo, who do not name a source.

Reggie Fils-Aime hinted at a “good” Wii surprise coming our way in September, but didn’t really say much more than that. Which is a shame, because I thought he and Blake were BFFL after E3.

What we know: It’s not the Mii popularity contest Channel, as he mentioned that in the same interview where he said there’s a surprise inbound to the Wii.

What we don’t know: Everything else.

There have been numerous rumours regarding a ´last secret´ to the Wii. Please read the commentary to this post for a good summary. Please appreciate that the post was written before the console´s launch and has not been updated.

To sum it up, Reggie originally promised that a secret would be revealed around launch. He later backed away from those claims.

So did Reggie perhaps promise the unveiling of the secret too early, retracted from that promise ... and now it is time to finally deliver? More importantly, where did Infendo get the quote from?

EDIT The quote is taken from Spike´s Gamehead interview, embedded below (the quote is 2:20 minutes into the interview).

  2. Hi Falafelkid

Do you think that the last secret will be a hardware or software announcement?

    @ Anonymous...

Isnt WiiConnect already in your Wii? Infact games are already making use of this feature. So if indeed there is to be an announcement I dont thinK it'll be that. If its what Reggie was reffering too (Wii will have another "BIG" revelation around launch time) that we never saw, then it could very well be BIG.

But what excatly could a BIG revalation be? And how BIG does he mean by BIG? Could a statement made by a huge film producer a few years back stating that a Japanese gaming company would be first to the market with stereoscopic 3D projection. Could we just get a HDD or a better online community that would allow us to interact with others like 360 owners are doing?

Whatever it is, I hope its good. Maybe Miaymoto is making a Halo type game? LOL...wouldnt that be different.

now i'm tired. i'm tired of the "secrets". if it's anything but stereo3d then-- whatever-- cool. if it's stereo3d, i will shit myself with laughter.

    that is all.

  7. I believe they got it from when Reggie was on gamehead.

  8. It was a quote from Gamehead trust me.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The quote was from a gamehead interview and in the context at least my take on it was that it was something to do with wiiconnect24 or another channel. something along those lines.

  11. Here we go again....

Perrin did say the same thing to Matt from IGN before the Wii launched last year. "An announcement that hardcore gamers would like."

What could that be? I've thought of 3 things:

    1. True Specs revealed and Nintendo explains what the Wii can really do when a developer actually tries.

    2. Nintendo announces the licensing of Unreal Engine 3 for the Wii.

    3. Nintendo announces that the Wii will be HD compatible for 720p via firmware upgrade.

Those are the only reasonable things I can think of. The whole DVD thing is something we already knew and wouldn't be a surprise.

    Let the speculation continue!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Urgh, give up on all this "true" hardware nonsense.

It's a new wii channel, most likely connected with demos, and even then it probably still won't be out until well into next year.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I will throw my two cents in.

Reggie said it was Wii24connect specific.

That is the only fact we know...so I doubt it will be hardware related. Although, it could have hardware implications.

I believe this is going to be a firmware update. A very big and important firmware update, that will do several things for the Wii owner.

No It will not magically turn the system into a cool Xbox 360...

But it will allow SD Cards play Virtual Console games on your Wii, and it will allow game saves to be accessed from the SD Cards.

Now, I am speculating here, but I predict that a Wii upgrade will be coming soon that allows Gamecube Games to be played with the Wii Classic Controller, and that it is only a matter of time for that fix to be created. Reason I believe this: Nintendo isn't creating new Gamecube Controllers yet still promotes Gamecube backwards compatibility.

Finally the firmware update will come with the new Mii channel talked about at E3. That is a given.

I think it's far more likely that the GC compatibility will be dropped altogether from a further hardware revision.

  15. rogue_pigeon:

Hmm, I don't think so. The Backwards compatiability is a big selling point for the Wii. And I don't see Nintendo dropping that for a hardware revision, unless they figure out a means to achieve backwards compatiability through emulation...and then Nintendo can use the Classic Controller through emulation for Gamecube games.

But, I don't see Nintendo splitting the market with a hardware revision that adds anything new to the Wii, and the Wii is cheap enough that it doesn't need to worry about taking anything away to make necessary price drops in the future.

I just believe there is still many problems with the firmware that Nintendo needs to address...they are all small issues, but they need to fixed, because they will become much larger problems for Nintendo in the future.

  16. VR helmet at last! ;)

  17. The wii is built on the same archetecture of the gamecube. A simple downclocking is all it takes to achieve gamecbue playability. Tehre's no reason to scrape backwards compatibility.

    Demo Channel?
    Music Download Channel?
    Movie Download Channel?
    VOIP Channel?

Who knows. All those right there, aside from Demo channel, would be quite a surprise.
