German industry event ´Games Convention´ to relocate for 2008

Europe´s biggest computer and videogame trade show, the German Games Convention, will relocate for 2008, several industry insiders have told me in confidence.

Until now, the event has been held in Leipzig every August. But, apparently, several large exhibitors are unhappy with the location and are pushing for the show to relocate. Leipzig has a modern site with five halls and additional outdoor space. But the city is hard to reach. Leipzig only has a small airport and is located in the east of the country.

It appears that no definite decision has been made about the new location. Several cities are said to be in the running, however, with two cities mentioned as the most likely to inherit the event.

Frankfurt is home to the world´s third largest venue for trade shows and hosts the book fair and the automobile show, both of which are the world´s largest.

Cologne boasts the world´s largest photographic and imaging fair, as well as the most important furniture fair.

The ´Games Convention´ took place for the first time in 2002. The dates for this year are 23rd to 26th of August.

EDIT The local government of the state of Hesse has openly thrown their weight behind Frankfurt´s bid for the ´Games Convention´. At the Gameplaces event, Minister Volker Hoff said that Frankfurt was the ideal location for the large trade show, as German technology news service Heise reports.

Hoff pointed to the airport (the world´s eighth-largest in terms of passenger count) and the fact that many studios and publishers are located nearby. Indeed, here is the impressive list:

Nintendo of Europe in Großostheim and Frankfurt
Sony Computer Entertainment Germany in Neu-Isenburg
Atari Germany in Frankfurt
Konami Germany in Frankfurt
Sunflowers in Heusenstamm (´Anno 1701´ aka ´1701 A.D.´, ´ParaWorld´)
10Tacle in Darmstadt (´Elveon´, ´GTR´)
Crytek in Frankfurt (´Far Cry´, ´Crysis´)
Related Designs in Mainz (´Anno 1701´ aka ´1701 A.D.´)
Deck13 in Frankfurt (´Ankh´, ´Jack Keane´)
Keen Games in Frankfurt (´Anno 1701´ for DS, ´Secret Files Tunguska´ for Wii)

The article continues with a rebuttal on behalf of the ´Games Convention´ owners, the Messe Leipzig. According to the company´s boss Wolfgang Marzin, the industry fully supports Leipzig. "We know from the industry that the current concept is the only viable one for the GC and that one belongs to Leipzig." Well, that is not what the industry told me. Remember where you read this story first.

  1. Hamburg is not on your list - I've heard rumors that state, that HH is one of the favorite cities, too.

  2. Hey Magnus. Hamburg has been very interested in the GC, you are quite right. Frankfurt and Cologne appear to be the favourites at the moment, though.

You mention that the site owners Leipziger Messe also own the show and its brand and that the German entertainment software association (BIU) has a contract with them up until and including 2008. A fair point.

However, pretty much the same happened with the E3. The ESA owned it and had a contract with the city for years to come. The ESA had even signed contracts only weeks before the event was cancelled (and eventually downsized into insignificance), according to the LA Downtown News.

The show had been contracted to stay Downtown through 2012. Attendees of the trade event (it was closed to the public) patronized at least a dozen Downtown hotels, and the establishments were traditionally booked months in advance. (...)

People throughout Downtown expressed shock at the announcement. Michael Collins, executive vice president of L.A. Inc., said it was especially surprising considering that just a few weeks ago, ESA officials were signing contracts for services tied to the 2007 expo. It remains unclear what costs ESA is obligated to pay. (...)

Collins said he was told that ESA was responding to a "very influential" group of exhibitors that felt the size of the show made it difficult to do business.

"They had a group of exhibitors," he said, "that said 'We are not creating an optimal sales environment for our kind of customer.' The event has taken on a different kind of direction, so that many of the events were actually distracting, and it was not a focused sales environment where they could focus on those clients they wanted to talk to."

So you see, contracts and brand ownership are worth nothing if the exhibitors are willing to revolt. After all, what good is a trade show without any exhibitors? That is precisely what is happening here. And I can tell you that it is almost certain that the GC will take place in Leipzig for the last time this year.

First of all, please post comments in English, if possible. I will try to paraphrase your argument.

You are not completely happy with the comparison to the E3 scenario, since the GC setup has the trade show married to the location (since the show is owned by the people who run the Leipzig Messe).

The ESA-equivalent could, you argue, install a new trade show entirely and that would not stop Leipzig to carry on with the Games Covention, albeit in a smaller and more regional incarnation.

Well, my immediate response is that that is just what happened with the E3. It became smaller and more regional.

But there are good grounds for believing that a GC without the major publisher´s support would simply not be viable. Who would pay a fee and travel some distance to see a trade show without participation of the big publishers?

No, I am sure that a scaled down version of the GC is not even an option for Leipzig. It´s either the full-blown thing - or nothing at all. Without the support of the major companies in this industry, the GC is dead.

  8. Hi Anonymous.

Again, this blog´s language is English. Please adhere to that, if you can.

I am updating the article, but your quote appears to be very biased. You might have quoted the original article. Anyway, that´s what I will do in my update.

  9. Ooh! Drama!

Hey Falafelkid, this reminds me, could you do another run down of upcoming conferences all throughout the year? I liked that feature from last year because it sort of prefaces the entire year in terms of conferences and possible news flashpoints.

  10. “We developed the PS3 as a hardware that lasts for decades and believe we are in a marathon rather than a sprint. With that said, SCE will accelerate the expansion of the PS3 platform over the next several months by offering a rich lineup of attractive software titles and pursuing own promotional activities as a platform holder.” -

Sony spokesperson Nanako Kato responds to the Wii outselling the PS3 6 to 1 in Japan

My response to that is that you can do many sprints but not everyone finishes marathons.

  11. The "very influential" group of exhibitors that felt the size of the show made it difficult to do business. it must have been Nintendo & Co. They where on the forefront to support the new Expo.
