Wii to ship 16 million units this year, says analyst

Nintendo is expected to ship 16 million units this year, an analyst with IDC has told Bloomberg.

Nintendo's lead will widen, pressuring companies even more. Researcher IDC predicts Nintendo will ship 16.1 million players this year, outpacing Microsoft's 9.87 million Xbox 360s and Sony's 9.1 million PlayStation 3s. Wii game sales will total $2.2 billion, trailing only Xbox 360, said IDC, based in Framingham, Massachusetts.

The analyst expects that these figures will ensure that Nintendo will overtake Microsoft and claim market leadership this year.

The article concentrates on Electronic Arts and other publishers underestimating the impact of the Wii until now. Those companies are apparently now rushing to get "their best-branded product on that platform. That will take a good nine to 12 months," another analyst claims.

  1. I love the FACT that no-one expected Nintendo to reclaim dominance in the console market again. This has happen many times in this industry...I still remember Sony proclaming how the PSP will take the handheld industry by storm and shove Nintendo into the darkness much like they did with the PS1/N64 wars. Hahaaaa, Remember, remember 1983. Nintendo has a way of surprising this industry...just because they have for rughly 10years been out of the number one spot doesnt mean they cant take it back....watch out Sony and Microsoft NINTENDO is kicking ass!!!

  2. 16 million a YEAR?!?! That's like... 4 million in 3 months? 1.33 million a month... ~440,000 units a month to each major market... If the Wii does those sorts of numbers it'll be selling at a rate even HIGHER than it's already selling! That'd put the Wii at 22 million worldwide by March 31 '08... in 1.5 years already having surpassed the GC's lifetime total!

  4. They have to keep the momentum with that, and with large titles coming out later this year, it's likely to happen.

  5. 16 million is far more reasonoable than the 20 million figure some people are floating around at other websites. Go Nintendo!

  6. Yeah, 16 million units this year. They will have accomplished it without a single Wii ever being available in a store or online ANYWHERE! Seriously... to sell 16 million units you need to be able to manufacture 16 million, right?

  7. I wouldn't say that... I'm typing this on my Wii at the moment, so there are a few systems out there. :P
