My good friend Product_Number_18 has come across an interesting Nintendo quote that might hint at a previously unannounced Wii feature.
Nintendo president Reginald Fils-Aime has, perhaps unwittingly, mentioned a microphone that will be utilized more in future software. Reggie said this towards the end of a recent interview with the Forbes Video Network:
There are things that I think we are just now scratching the surface of, in terms of what the system can do. One piece is the microphone and how the microphone enhances the gameplay.
Was this just a mistake? Or did Reggie unwittingly reveal a previously unannounced Wii feature? I have always believed that there was a microphone built into the Wiimote. What do you think?

Thanks to: Product_Number_18
That or a mic and boom set that would plug into the connector on the bottom of the Wiimote.
ReplyDeleteHi Jason Alexander.
ReplyDeleteGood point. But can I ask you an off-topic question here, please? Why did you take Inc and Rebus on as writers? They were the biggest spammers last year and they don´t even post anything on your site. Why?
Hope you can clear this up, because you do have a great Blog.
Thanks, Andreas.
It looked to me like he meant to say "speaker" the fnaboys are getting to him
ReplyDeleteWhat got my attention more was the stuff he didn't say. I got the feeling he really wanted to say something several times but held back. The "scratching the surface" comments everytime the Mii's are mentioned or online.
If i had to bet i'd say it was the online functionality. Hopefully it's everything we imagine it could be, Mii's and online just seem to conjure up so many possiblities. Just don't give us a watered down online experience like we got with the DS.
Hi Shaun.
ReplyDeleteThe "scratching the surface" comments everytime the Mii's are mentioned or online.
Also a very good point. What about some kind of Animal Crossing-ish type MMO environment for Miis?
Sorry for double post, but i just thought of something and since i know you love rumours with an argument i'll try and explain...
ReplyDeleteOk so my (wacky) theory is that the wiimote speaker is both a speaker and a microphone in one.
This would explain why the speaker quality is worse than some people expected.
I don't know the full physics behind them but the way i understand it they are similar in priciple so maybe the same component functions as either a speaker or a microphone.
Afterall it would make no sense using both at the same time.
someone who has a wii needs to be brave an sacrifice there controller in order to prove or disprove it.
ReplyDeletei would do it but... im not insain.
lol na i havnt got a wii of course, nz guy 4 a reason
Wahoo i didn't sleep through all my Physics lessons at school afterall
ReplyDeletehttp://www.zyra.org.uk/sp-mic.htm
He meant to say speaker imo, I would think we would know if there was a speaker in there from the guys who are opening up their systems/controllers.
ReplyDeleteStill, what caught my ear was - >METROID CONFIRMED FOR SPRING<
A speaker and a mic ARE basically the same thing. You can take any speaker and turn it into a microphone and vice versa. The only difference is in the amount of power they both need to function properly. Speakers obviously need a lot of power to be effective in most situations besides in a phone or earbud headphones. A mic, like in a phone, is powered by the sound waves that hit it and that is transeferred into electrical current. It may be that the speaker in the Wiimote will double as a mic as well. Perhaps the poor quality of the speakers output suggests this very fact.
ReplyDelete..a definitive pont on the Wiimote feature as he without hesitation looked down on it and pointed or as you will, plased his finger ontop of it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought that (when read this topic)that it might/should be a feature that will utilize with the DS as this will keep the connectivity and make it live (the connections activity btween GC-GBA & Wii-DS) plus that will or might attached more customer.
but obiously it was realated to the Wiimote only...
Ps: thx for keeping the community up to date Fal.

Well,to be honest, I think that Blizziboy and Grandmaster biatch s.... d.....
ReplyDeletein the industry!
thats a very ilse way 2 insult ppl anonymous...
ReplyDeleteand i dont no wat ur on about but good 4 u (thumbs up)

So in case you missed it :
*****DAVID vs. GOLIATH****
ROUND 6
"Not only do you post comments in the wrong threads and continously display your intolerance of other gamers' tastes, it's time you actually played the games you're dissing."
Now this is really an unbounded cheek. What you say has nothing to do with nothing.I am just as much entitled to an opinion as Herr Schneider its' majesty.Such a statement at the very beginning of your text only attests to your overall lack of substance as you clearly feel inclined to incite others against me with this pointless irrelevant deviance.
" To suggest that innovation is primarily made possible by changing the control mechanism is like saying all books are the same because they rely on text and make you flip pages. As I've said again and again and again, I enjoy Wii, I like the new control mechanism and have high hopes that it'll lead to innovative games. But please drop the argument that other consoles' games haven't evolved or added much to gaming."
With all due respect Herr Schneider, that was probably the most rediculous and pointless comparison I have ever heard in my entire life. Books and games are two entirely different mediums. Books are already consummate for what they are since they serve their purpose for hundreds of years. They leave nothing to be desired.
I insist that Mario 64 was the last real evolution in gaming.I added a new dimension to gaming. All the games that you see nowadays feature the main ingredients that were introduced back then in a robust manner with Mario 64.
The innovations that you speak of on other consoles are a drop in the bucket compared to the innovation(s) that Mario 64 brought to the table. As far as innovation is concerned, people neither won't look back and remember the ability to command your team mates in Rainbow Six: Vegas nore will they accossiate (real)innovation with the ability to play GOWs singleplayer mode in co-op. No! They will look back one day and clearly spot Mario 64 as the game that set the ball rolling.Again, the innovation you talk about is in most cases so subtle, so peanuts, that it's not even worth mentioning I'm afraid to say.
"Likewise, just like I can enjoy the excellent Twilight Princess -- which sticks really closely to the age-old Zelda formula with just some minor added Wiimote elements -- I can enjoy titles like Rainbow Six: Vegas which stick closely to its established gameplay paradigms. R6 perfects the cover/shoot mechanics by introducing third-person elements to the series, improves squad control (tell your team what to do and when to execute it), adds more story elements, and radically upgrades the graphics to bring home an even grittier and more realistic experience."
Red Steel is the perfect example why your argument doesn't add up.As many reviewers acknowledged, the story and presentational side of things get the job done quite buttery. Leaving not much to be desired. The controls on the other hand just totally crush its' undeniable potential by forcing you to move the reticule almost to the edge of the screen in order to move the camera which in turn translates into akward movement. As you can see I'm using a Wii game here to illustrate the sheer importance of controls and the impact it has on the overall game design and expirience when done wrong. You probably know what ratings Red Steel got for it's unrefined controls. Yet still, many people who had the chance to test try either Call of Duty 3(which does it better controlwise than Red Steel) or Red Steel didn't abstract away from the fact that it still had an egde over conventional controllers. It should be clear by now that I'm not beating my own drum here. I insist on my opinion that the new control method may very well have a stronger and more magnifiscent impact on innovation in game design than the solely software specific(and in my mind subtle)innovations on the other consoles that you so doggedly defend.
"I'm not too cool to express my likes and dislikes: I love good gameplay AND I love good graphics and sound. I think a game like Gears of War absolutely lives off its visual impact. One moment, it makes you feel like you're in the movie Pitch Black, afraid to step into the light because swarms of flying creatures will take your head off. At other times, you're running for your life because an oversized and frightfully rendered berzerker beast is out to pound you to goo. The fact that the entire game runs perfectly in two-player co-op online (and has loads of elements designed for two players to work together, such as one guy moving a spotlight to protect the other from darkness, or one driving an APV and the other manning the turrets) is proof that the developer wasn't content to entirely rely on graphical dazzle."
First of all, it's not about being "too cool" to express his feelings towards something. Instead It's about separating the wheat from the chaff. Gears of War - if anything- is the prime picturebook example of stagnating, static game design. There is absolutly nothing new in terms of raw innovation that Gears of War introduced. Quite the opposite actually. It's no mystery in my book that GOW blithely helps itself by breathing down other peoples neck. It's clear as daylight. On this account alone I don't see anything that justifies its' purchase over any other game. To be honest with you, I couldn't possibly care less about GOWs' clumsy, heavy-handed characters and apocalyptic ,sucked dry, monster/alien invasion/uprising cliche story. And eventhough the technology in games like Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime 1 never matches GOWs' I find them much wittier and far more distictive when it comes to the variety of environments, sheer architectural detail, texture design, character design and overall art style(but there's certainly no accounting for taste I should add ).
"I will not buy bad games with good graphics, but I'll buy good games with bad graphics. You can stop repeating the company line to me that it's all about reaching the mass market or how the industry is declining (it isn't in the US. That's a problem unique to Japan, which is hyper-focused on mobile and portable culture), because you're neither telling me anything I haven't heard before nor are you making a convincing argument by trying to degrade good games. You hurl insults at me saying I'm "brainwashed," yet you dare repeat Nintendo's justification why its console is underpowered while trying to force the viewpoint that gamers should ignore technical advancements and be content that new control elements are introduced. How about both?"
That sounds utterly confusing. You contradict yourself with your statements there mate. First you attach prime importance to gameplay and gameplay mechnics over graphics just to put the importance of graphics on a par with it at the end of your text.As for your other statement concerning decline in the industry.
The industry is INDEED NOT declining in the US since people like you buy into the muddy waters of Microsoft and Sony. They pulled the sheets way over your head. And I'm certainly not trying to degrade good games. I'm simply pointing out the lack of innovation on tried and true gameplay formulas, and I'm cocksure that Wii finds a remedy by forcing developers to rethink their general on approach on game design.
"The statement that "Nintendo is the only company that drives the industry forward in a reasonable manner" is hollow, as Microsoft delivered an amazing online experience with Xbox Live that got console gamers playing and talking to each other online, comparing each other's accomplishments via achievements, trying their mettle at simple, downloadable games (which they weren't doing on their PCs) and building up friend lists quickly and easily. Sony is obviously struggling to give us anything but raw power, but nobody in their right mind would brush off what the company has done with PSX and PS2, broadening the console-playing audience in the first place with the help of third parties."
Look, I'm not going to argue with you over things that clearly digress from the matter at hand. The only thing that is distinguishable from the games you mention as far as the online expirience is conerned is the community aspect and the plurality of it. You are totally at cross purposes with me I'm afraid to say. Noone denies that Sony broadened the market or that Microsoft built up a proper online service for its' console. You beat about the bush there since it's simply besides the point. So what? Does that change the fact that innovation is stagnating to the fullest in this industry? Sorry, but I really don't get your point there I'm afraid to say! The games you talk about are a dime a dozen nowadays concept and gameplay wise.
Again, the subtle innovation that you mention can't hold a candle to the innovation that Nintendo introduced with its' new controller.
"The fact is, I have broad tastes in gaming. I am able to enjoy Brain Age Sudoku one minute, then jump into an online match of Splinter Cell and enjoy it all the same. There's a time for simple presentation and graphics, such as in Wario Ware. And there's definitely a time for cinematic experiences with dazzling visuals and audio, like God of War, Metroid: Prime, Metal Gear, Gears of War, Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, F-Zero GX, and so on. F-Zero GX, for example, did little in the ways of innovation. But it was an incredibly enjoyable racer in its own right. Not every game has to reinvent the wheel, as enjoyable launch games like Trauma Center show. It uses the same control concept as its DS counterpart and even duplicates the majority of the stages, but it's still a fun game.
Finally, please stop with your misguided assertions on what I like and dislike. My "excessive dissatisfaction and attitude towards the system far outweigh your cautious optimism?" Where do you get this crap? Do not mistake the desire to get better visuals out of a console that I waited five years on and paid $250 for excessive dissatisfaction. Just like I can complain about Gears of War being too short of a game and still enjoy its two-player co-op or that the camera system in Shadow of the Colossus was made by Satan himself, I can enjoy Twilight Princess and still lament its graphical shortcomings.
Since your arguments are running in circles and you're obviously not able to convince me to suddenly not enjoy games that I like or pretend like changing controls are the only ways to innovate, this is the last time I respond to your posts unless you change your tune and tone."
And that's just pure contempt. I am simply tired of wading through the same old games that merely feature minor ajustments to the concept and aesthetics yet pretend to have a blast with them because normal-mapping and HDR lightning make all the difference according to you techies. Big deal.At the end of the day I'm still just pressing the same buttons over oand over again with my thumb that affect the gameplay. Abstract button combinations that serve their purpose. Please respect that I favour the new method of control. It seems like a breeze of fresh air. What you don't get is that I'm not saying that it's neccessarily the games that are bad, instead it's just that I have a hard time enjoying those games nowadays since I have played too many of them, even with all the added bells and whistles. To conclude, maybe by impressions of JAK3 will shed some light:
Is it just me or is conventional gameplay with standard controllers getting boring?
Just recently I went to my local game dealer and bought Jak 3 for PS2, supposedly one of the best jump and run/action-adventure games that are available for the system (after reading some marvelous reviews of the game I should add).
Maybe I should add that I am a big fan of jump and run games ever since the good old NES days.
Having spent about 5-6 hours or so with the game I must confess that I have a strange feeling. I can't help it. I have a feeling that is creeping the ish out of me.
A feeling of emptiness. And you know why ? Because-lo and behold- I'm sitting here and wondering what got me into gaming at all.

It's perfectly paced and offers so much alteration(youfly, jump, cruise, shoot, slide, kick, glide, float etc.). I would even go as far and say that it's one of the best put together games I have ever played. It's challenging without being unfair or too easy. The controls and graphics are also quite buttery and robust. In fact, it does so much right that I wouldn't even dare to critizise it, I wouldn't even know how to put it in words to be honest. Yet while playing it, I never got that sense of delight and achievment, progressing through the game. This game just totally crushed my world view. Wouldnt susprise me if there is a MIC in it. My speakerphones are a MIC/speaker combo but in order for it to be better quality they need to be seperate components. Not unless they have developed something better.
...um guys!
ReplyDeleteThis seems fushy somehow. whtat do you think?
Read this interesting link. A interwiev conducted by Gamasutra with the Wiimote developer partner , Dr. Wei Yen:
GS:
"This seems like it’s aimed at independent developers, is that what Nintendo’s trying to do?"
WY:
"This isn’t the question you’re asking, but I want to answer something else, if you don’t mind."

that mic should have been there from the start, some secret... pfff, that's lame as can be...
ReplyDeletetry again nintendo...
if i may suggest something...make some software that lets us play gamecubegames (example: metroid prime 1 & 2) with the wiimote...
now that would amaze me...
but not a stupid mic wich should have been there from the beginning...
did i just repeat myself...?
Hello, first time i post on this site.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts on the whole microphone is that it will be a headset with another function than just a microphone.
The headset could offer a way for the Wii to measure where your head is in accordance to the screen. This would enable slight camera movements when you move your head, and therefor enlarge the feeling of depth. And it will truly make you say "wow".
What do you think of that Falafelkid?
Grandmaster biatch please tell how come that Blizz149 is an angel from heaven compared to you?
ReplyDeleteAnd please please tell me just how small must your penis be when you you constantly feel inclined to bitch over other peoples comments?
Just how small?
Don't you see that the BIATCH in you is ouzing all out again you tard huh???
Are you to blind to see that Jealousy and envy speaks out of you???
I'll be damned if I ever said anything bad against Blizz since you are the unsurpassable, swallow, miscreant, booby punch I have ever had the pleasure to come across.
Maybe people don't come anymore because the can't hear you pointless sucked dry blubbering anymore.
THE IALS at least posts shit within reason.
Please do THE IALS a favour and jump out the fuckin' window or stfu once and for all.
Kid neither gives a shit about what I post nore about your bitching. How about that tard?
Seriously Grand master biatch,
I can't hear the voice that is speaking out of your text.
All I hear is whine,whine,whine.
Please bring back Blizz and get lost forever. I would exchange him with you every second witout turning a hair.
Cheers.

Why exactly are you (The I.A.L.S) so obsessed with the size of peoples penis's?
ReplyDeleteThese constant long posts are annoying. Your arrogance refering to yourself in third person, constantly preaching through these comments is detremental to this site and tars the comments feature. Something i'm sure falafelkid is fully aware of.
The fact you use this site like your own personal soap box is clear to everyone. It's just plain sad, set up your own blog. The real reason you do it is you know this site has traffic, your own blog would not, admit it to yourself and grow up.
If there is a way to limit post length and number of posts per news item i suggest it be implemented.
Is it any wonder discussions through this site have declined.
Just stop with your diatribes already.
ReplyDeleteReal men mind their own business.
See Falafelkid is real.
THE IALS respects him for that.
He minds his own business and doesn't let people unnerve.
That's difference between you and him.(Plus we share some musical ground I should add)
I prefer this place as its not run my some fancy clown like you.
And I appreciate that thi8s place isn't too crowded.
I'm not that internet chat type of person. I'm not an internet nerd.
I do this just for fun.To give you people and myself some alteration.
What would the world be without people that are bit off the mark huh?
You are simply no match Grandmaster biatch.
And stop calling yourself like this.
You are really the last person who deserves such a title!
Get your act together!
It's all good laddi!

IGN disassembled the wiimote, and there was no microphone in it.
ReplyDeletei dont know if they had retail-motes, though. but as this feature on IGN is from 21st november, i guess they are retail ones.

Like i said before they technically could use the same component for both, so taking it apart wouldn't prove anything

hi, didnt nintendo already say like months ago that they will release a headset for wii?
ReplyDeletetechnically its possible to use a speaker as a mic.

IALS:
>Running out of arguments Peer?
------------------------------
PEER SCHNEIDER IGN:
I know you know that's not the case. I simply realized the futility of arguing with someone who doesn't understand that there's such a thing as wanting gameplay advancements AND technical advancements, that the two aren't mutually exclusive and often actually complementary."
---------------------------
IALS:
No, they are not exclusive and yes, they really can complement each other.
HOWEVER.
The problem is, that it simply is rudimentary and unreasonable to demand "gameplay advancements AND technical advancements" from Wii when you take the concept and current market situation into account.
What you don't get is that Wii simply wouldn't be Wii if the system was more expansive.
Again,to make Wii powerful they would have had to charge up to 450$ for it(as Miyamoto underlined on BusinessWeek.)
And your argument that they could have done it by making a smaller profit on it doesn't really add up either since they simply don't have as much money as the competition to throw around. Remember that Nintendo is a games company and not a multimedia giant like Sony. They would have run a higher risk, had they lost money on each system sold.
What is wrong with you?
Can't you see that the mass market price is in line with the entire concept and philosophy ( a small affordable system ) behind Wii ? And that in turn, it's simply not reasonable to demand high end from it in the present state of business?
And why can't you see that the system you demand from Nintendo at the moment could never be reality, is ghost ? Wii the way you'd like it doesn't add up from a business standpoint if you take all the factors into account. The technology is not cheap enough yet to demand such a system from Nintendo. They were third last gen. They had to go a differnet route this time around in order to survive, in order to obtain acceptance in the home console sector once again. Thus it's simply foolish to complain about graphics.
I know that it is a double edged sword. I would also like to have both. But since I understand the approach and philosophy behind it I am content with it, as I'm not too blind or ignorant to see that this was easily the most reasonable way to launch a new console for Nintendo.
That's why I simply find it rudimentary to complain about the graphics Peer.

Yes it is technically possible to use a speaker as a mic, and actually possible to do it the other way around though pretty hard. Both these methods are give pretty crap results though.
ReplyDeleteI'm suggesting they could have built a component designed to do both, one or the other, not at the same time.
Do i think they did? Not really. I don't think the possibilities of using a microphone on the controller actually sank in for them until it was a too late. An attachment is certainly possible, though not being built in would make it as supported as the GC mic was.
