My good friend Product_Number_18 has come across an interesting Nintendo quote that might hint at a previously unannounced Wii feature.
Nintendo president Reginald Fils-Aime has, perhaps unwittingly, mentioned a microphone that will be utilized more in future software. Reggie said this towards the end of a recent interview with the Forbes Video Network:
There are things that I think we are just now scratching the surface of, in terms of what the system can do. One piece is the microphone and how the microphone enhances the gameplay.
Was this just a mistake? Or did Reggie unwittingly reveal a previously unannounced Wii feature? I have always believed that there was a microphone built into the Wiimote. What do you think?

What got my attention more was the stuff he didn't say. I got the feeling he really wanted to say something several times but held back. The "scratching the surface" comments everytime the Mii's are mentioned or online.
If i had to bet i'd say it was the online functionality. Hopefully it's everything we imagine it could be, Mii's and online just seem to conjure up so many possiblities. Just don't give us a watered down online experience like we got with the DS.

Ok so my (wacky) theory is that the wiimote speaker is both a speaker and a microphone in one.
This would explain why the speaker quality is worse than some people expected.
I don't know the full physics behind them but the way i understand it they are similar in priciple so maybe the same component functions as either a speaker or a microphone.
Afterall it would make no sense using both at the same time.
someone who has a wii needs to be brave an sacrifice there controller in order to prove or disprove it.

A speaker and a mic ARE basically the same thing. You can take any speaker and turn it into a microphone and vice versa. The only difference is in the amount of power they both need to function properly. Speakers obviously need a lot of power to be effective in most situations besides in a phone or earbud headphones. A mic, like in a phone, is powered by the sound waves that hit it and that is transeferred into electrical current. It may be that the speaker in the Wiimote will double as a mic as well. Perhaps the poor quality of the speakers output suggests this very fact.

And I thought that (when read this topic)that it might/should be a feature that will utilize with the DS as this will keep the connectivity and make it live (the connections activity btween GC-GBA & Wii-DS) plus that will or might attached more customer.

As you can see I'm using a Wii game here to illustrate the sheer importance of controls and the impact it has on the overall game design and expirience when done wrong. You probably know what ratings Red Steel got for it's unrefined controls. Yet still, many people who had the chance to test try either Call of Duty 3(which does it better controlwise than Red Steel) or Red Steel didn't abstract away from the fact that it still had an egde over conventional controllers. It should be clear by now that I'm not beating my own drum here. I insist on my opinion that the new control method may very well have a stronger and more magnifiscent impact on innovation in game design than the solely software specific(and in my mind subtle)innovations on the other consoles that you so doggedly defend.

Quite the opposite actually. It's no mystery in my book that GOW blithely helps itself by breathing down other peoples neck. It's clear as daylight. On this account alone I don't see anything that justifies its' purchase over any other game. To be honest with you, I couldn't possibly care less about GOWs' clumsy, heavy-handed characters and apocalyptic ,sucked dry, monster/alien invasion/uprising cliche story. And eventhough the technology in games like Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime 1 never matches GOWs' I find them much wittier and far more distictive when it comes to the variety of environments, sheer architectural detail, texture design, character design and overall art style(but there's certainly no accounting for taste I should add ).

Is it just me or is conventional gameplay with standard controllers getting boring?
Just recently I went to my local game dealer and bought Jak 3 for PS2, supposedly one of the best jump and run/action-adventure games that are available for the system (after reading some marvelous reviews of the game I should add).
Maybe I should add that I am a big fan of jump and run games ever since the good old NES days.
Having spent about 5-6 hours or so with the game I must confess that I have a strange feeling. I can't help it. I have a feeling that is creeping the ish out of me.
A feeling of emptiness. And you know why ? Because-lo and behold- I'm sitting here and wondering what got me into gaming at all.
Somehow after playing Jak 3, I feel totally out of touch with games. There is nothing that conjoins me with them anymore. And you know what the weirdest thing about all this is? Jak 3 isn't even a bad game at all. Far from it. Quite the opposite frankly. It's actually a nimble exemplary designed piece of interactive entertainment. It's perfectly paced and offers so much alteration(youfly,jump,cruise,shoot,slide,kick,glide,float etc.). I would even go as far and say that it's one of the best put together games I have ever played. It's challenging without being unfair or too easy. The controls and graphics are also quite buttery and robust. In fact, it does so much right that I wouldn't even dare to critizise it, I wouldn't even know how to put it in words to be honest. Yet while playing it, I never got that sense of delight and achievment, progressing through the game. This game just totally crushed my world view. How on earth could I not have fun with a game that totally appeals to me ? a game that does so much right ? a game that has such a charming, vivid style ? Just how on earth ? Is it due to me being stoned all the time, taking hits from the bong ? Or am I simply jaded ? Or have I simply played too many games with the same gameplay formulas eventhough they are not as well put together? To conclude,I guess either one of the above or conventional controllers simply don't do it for me anymore...

Hello, first time i post on this site.
My thoughts on the whole microphone is that it will be a headset with another function than just a microphone.
The headset could offer a way for the Wii to measure where your head is in accordance to the screen. This would enable slight camera movements when you move your head, and therefor enlarge the feeling of depth. And it will truly make you say "wow".

No, they are not exclusive and yes, they really can complement each other.
HOWEVER.
The problem is, that it simply is rudimentary and unreasonable to demand "gameplay advancements AND technical advancements" from Wii when you take the concept and current market situation into account.
What you don't get is that Wii simply wouldn't be Wii if the system was more expansive.
Again,to make Wii powerful they would have had to charge up to 450$ for it(as Miyamoto underlined on BusinessWeek.)
And your argument that they could have done it by making a smaller profit on it doesn't really add up either since they simply don't have as much money as the competition to throw around. Remember that Nintendo is a games company and not a multimedia giant like Sony. They would have run a higher risk, had they lost money on each system sold.
What is wrong with you?
Can't you see that the mass market price is in line with the entire concept and philosophy ( a small affordable system ) behind Wii ? And that in turn, it's simply not reasonable to demand high end from it in the present state of business?
And why can't you see that the system you demand from Nintendo at the moment could never be reality, is ghost ? Wii the way you'd like it doesn't add up from a business standpoint if you take all the factors into account. The technology is not cheap enough yet to demand such a system from Nintendo. They were third last gen. They had to go a differnet route this time around in order to survive, in order to obtain acceptance in the home console sector once again. Thus it's simply foolish to complain about graphics.
I know that it is a double edged sword. I would also like to have both. But since I understand the approach and philosophy behind it I am content with it, as I'm not too blind or ignorant to see that this was easily the most reasonable way to launch a new console for Nintendo.
That's why I simply find it rudimentary to complain about the graphics Peer.

Yes it is technically possible to use a speaker as a mic, and actually possible to do it the other way around though pretty hard. Both these methods are give pretty crap results though.
I'm suggesting they could have built a component designed to do both, one or the other, not at the same time.
Do i think they did? Not really. I don't think the possibilities of using a microphone on the controller actually sank in for them until it was a too late. An attachment is certainly possible, though not being built in would make it as supported as the GC mic was.
