´Zelda: Twilight Princess´: Rev controller features confirmed, after all

In the seemingly never-ending saga of the rumours surrounding ´Zelda: Twilight Princess´ having Revolution controller compatibility, Mathieu Minel, Nintendo of France´s marketing director, seems to suggest that such compatibility is a given. He spoke to Jeux-France (my translation is based on Babelfish).

Which form will the special [controller] functionality take? Will there be two versions of the game or will it be within the source code of the [Gamecube version]? We do not yet know which solution will be chosen, nor what that functionality will be.

Though we do not yet have a release date on our schedule, I can tell you that we are already working on the marketing campaign for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. So I think the game will launch soon, though that still isn´t a precise statement. Especially because of its Nintendo Revolution compatibility, there are many factors which influence this game´s release date.

While Minel definitely seems to suggest that there will be Rev controller features, there are wrong translations of this interview circulating the net. As far as I can make out, Minel never explicitly said that he ´knows those features will be included´ (though he certainly implies it). Nor did he ever talk about ´a new and violent battle system´, as other translations suggest.

Minel made another interesting comment, when asked about whether the Revolution will be playable at E3 and, if so, what titles we can expect on the showfloor.

Yes, Nintendo Revolution should be playable at E3 2006. Concerning the games which will be presented at the American event, I can only tell you that you will probably be surprised...

Intriguing, indeed. I pretty much expect to see ´Metroid Prime 3´ and a ´Mario´ title playable on Revolution at E3. I cannot imagine a title that would truly surprise me. But I am eager to find out.

EDIT The question regarding Zelda has just been removed from the original article. Even an image showing Link disappeared. I will try and get in touch with Jeux-France and update you promptly.

The question is: where exactly will Nintendo be holding their press conference? In the big room or in one of the smaller rooms? I think you might be one of the few who can clear this up.

Also, someone just found out that the Kodak theatre is reflected in the ON helmets. Just look at these pictures:

These are not photoshopped, you can check that in the video and some of the pictures.

The ON video was made before the E3 2005 press conference and before Nintendo announced they'll be showing up in the Kodak theatre next year. If it's a guess, it must have been a pretty damn good one. If someone would have told any of you about the Kodak Theatre before Nintendo, I'm sure no one would believe it. So why would Pablo even consider doing something like this?

Also, the Kodak Theatre is one of the few with 3D projection. It would be perfect for showcasing some sort of projector or headset.

  7. From www.gonintento.com:

Finally, the definitive answer as to where Nintendo’s keynote will take place. This is an email from our Nintendo rep Allison in response to my question last night.

"It will be held at the Kodak Theater (not the ballroom). We’ve way outgrown the ballroom as folks from last year will agree. The fire marshal delayed the briefing because sooo many people were packed in there and there was no room for aisles. So we’ve upgraded to the theater. Cool huh?"

  8. I read what your story and to me I don't think he knows at all.

Just because you work for Nintendo doesn't mean you are privvy to all the answers and all the information. Specially when you work outside of Japan and America (Nintendo's bigger corporate offices.)

I chalk this up to a director acting as he knows more than he does. Trying to say something to the press to make himself seem important in this whole Nintendo Revolution mystery, but in truth he knows nothing.

  13. Translation in point form:

    - Laurent Fischer has become Nintendo’s new European marketing boss

    - 2005 was a good year for Nintendo in France, Nintendogs has sold much more units in Europe than Japan or even USA.

    - Nintendo seems to be serious when they say that maybe people won't even be allowed de take pictures of the games for Nintendo Revolution at E3, journalists will be able to play so they could express their very own feelings about the Revolution experience to the gamers. sucks... Hope they won't do that anyway...

    - the controller has to be very natural for the gamer, even if it will be very strange at the begging, this is the goal for Nintendo.

    - They still don't know if it has a microphone in it.

    - Nintendo Revolution online service should be very similar to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for Nintendo DS.

    - A new Zelda (not The Legend of Zelda : Twilight Princess), Mario and Super Smash Bros. Melee will be released on Nintendo Revolution.

    - Good surprises (games) to come at E3 for Nintendo Revolution.

    - The Legend of Zelda : Twilight Princess should have Revolution features : Special edition or included initially in the game ? They still don't know but Marketing has already started in France for The Legend of Zelda : Twilight Princess.

    - PlayStation 3 controller could work like Nintendo Revolution controller...

    - Mr. Miyamoto is working on some new Nintendo characters for Nintendo Revolution.

  14. hi falafelkid!

at least he didn´t say something like "mario wars nike shoes" or something like that ^^

anyway, i think its a good idea to add special revolution controller features. i think that zelda:tp could be more successful that way. most people would buy a rev with zelda:tp and a rev game. or nintendo may even release a revolution bundle with twilight princess (wich would be odd, to be honest. bundeling a next gen console with a last generation game ;-) )

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm really sorry, but I need an answer since it could explain some things about the 3rd secret of the Rev.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi Stabby. Please don´t double-post, but thanks for the info. I have seen that find, but I am totally unconvinced that that is the Kodak Theater reflecting in that helmet.

    1) There is only the illuminated arch visible, but that setup is by no means exclusive to that specific venue.

    2) The large screen-like rectangles on either side cannot be accounted for. there are photos of the Kodak Theater with screens, but they are nowhere near as big as that reflection would suggest. Consider that the loges are so near to the stage that screens that big just wouldn´t fit.

    3) There is a light source from above. That huge white spot on top of the helmet would suggest a natural light source (a skylight) in the roof. That doesn´t exist in that Theater.

I am pretty sure that there is pretty much no resemblance there.

At any rate, it has long been established that Nintendo will hold their press conference not in the Ballroom, but in the big theatre where the Oscar ceremony is also held.

    ReplyDelete
  26. thnx Falafelkid, but if it's not the Kodak Theatre, then what is it?

Also, I have one more interesting theory about Zelda on the Rev. Why would the game have to be delayed 6 months to include Rev controls? Doesn't sound too logical to me. Unless Nintendo really wants to showcase the Rev's functions with a big game like Zelda. But the controller isn't THAT special, right? So what if the Revolution does make use of some kind of 3D projection? It explains perfectly why it takes so long to include the Rev functions and why Nintendo wants to launch the game together with the Rev.

And I think Nintendo using the big room this year could also be a hint to 3D. The big theatre is one of the few with 3D projection.

    ReplyDelete
  27. it seems to me that jeux-france edited more than one time the interview.

    look at http://www.gamekult.com/tout/forum/lire_374892_page5.html

there is clearly a part about the zelda combat system.

    Which is no more there.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm convinced: Revolution will make use of 3D projection and so will Zelda: TP.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Stabby, how do you get Revolution/Zelda TP confirmed to have 3d projection out of that? I mean honestly. It just confirms that zelda will use the revolution controller.

I wouldn't expect any other sort of enhancements though unless it comes as a full DVD as well as a GC disk because there would be no room for more content.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I will have to agree with Anonym here. Such a delay can surely be explained with controller functionality only. That would easily take six months.

Consider that manufacturers of 3D stereoscopic technology have told me that games would not have to be specially adapted to 3D output. It would even work with old games.

Also, if 3D output took Nintendo that long to incorporate into a Rev game, then how come the developers still seem to have no clue about that kind of thing?

Finally, I just want to remind everyone that 3D projection is no dead cert in my opinion. I don´t even think it´s very likely. All I want to point out is that it´s a possibility that shouldn´t be dismissed outright. Again, we shouldn´t get our hopes up too high.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Zelda in 3D wouldn't require more room, just some extra programming for the Rev. And there are way too many clues hinting to 3D projection, I'm convinced that the Rev will use some sort of new visual display. And so is Falafelkid.

Read my comment from a few posts earlier:

"I have one more interesting theory about Zelda on the Rev. Why would the game have to be delayed 6 months to include Rev controls? Doesn't sound too logical to me. Unless Nintendo really wants to showcase the Rev's functions with a big game like Zelda. But the controller isn't THAT special, right? Not only that, but there are patents hinting to 3D and the comments from Brooke Burgess regarding Robert Rodriguez' assistant claiming there will be a game machine beating IMAX to using 3D.

Burgess also made a comment about a 3D periphal for the gamecube being shown at E3 2004, though that could have been the controller.

    ReplyDelete
  32. @Falafelkid: Nintendo delayed Zelda because they want it to be released together with the Rev. It doesn't have that much to do with more work on the game.

Perhaps Nintendo wants a big franchise to showcase the Rev's 3D capabilities. Zelda would be perfect in doing so. If Nintendo releases Zelda a few months before the Rev, the game would have gotten old by then.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I guess Stabby's assumption comes from the Kodak theater being one of the few to support 3D projection.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi Stabby.

Nintendo delayed Zelda because they want it to be released together with the Rev. It doesn't have that much to do with more work on the game.

I disagree. I am sure they are working hard on adding substantial controller functionality, albeit only for minigames perhaps. But that alone would take the better part of a year.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi 910do. That cameron project is set to be a massive multiplayer, as far as I know. I myself cannot imagine that genre on a Nintendo console. But Nintendo have said that this genre would be well-suited for the Rev. So it´s a possibility.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I presume that Zelda it is gonna be released close to Rev's launch, but the best strategy is be to release Zelda 2 - 3 months before the Rev, that way Gamecube owners won't feel betrayed, plus think about it, having Rev functionality would add replay value, Gamecube owners will buy it as soon as is out, then they would buy the Rev and could play the same game again just different interface.

    ReplyDelete
  37. First they confirm it. Then they unconfirm it. Then they confirm it again - until we all feel stuck in a time loop.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I refuse to believe this until further notice

    ReplyDelete
  39. "And I think Nintendo using the big room this year could also be a hint to 3D. The big theatre is one of the few with 3D projection."

Where do you get this information that the Kodak theatre is one of the few places with 3d projection?

I think thats total bs. give me proof!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Mathieu Minel: "I just know that Nintendo will release either a special edition of Twilight Princess for Nintendo Revolution's controller new functionalities or include these functionalities directly into the original sourcecode, thanks to the compatibility between the two systems. But actually we still don't know which option will be chosen. We don't have any releasedate as well, but we're already working on all the marketing aspects of Twilight Princess so I think the game will be out soon, even if the exact date is yet unknown. It all depends on the compatibility with the Revolution and a lot of others things. You know, this game will be a full set of surprises, especially with a new and violent battle system but I can't tell anymore."

    there you have it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. @Falafelkid: everyone is starting to wonder if the Brooke Burgess comment from last year is true. I'm talking about Robert Rodriguez or his assistant (not sure) stating a game machine will beat IMAX to bringing 3D to the mainstream market. People all over the net are asking for someone to find out Robert Rodriguez' e-mail adress and ask him about it. And I couldn't find anyone better up for the task than you.

If his statement is proven to be true, then this could be the biggest piece of evidence that Nintendo will enter the 3D market. Because if anyone is in a position to catch all the latest rumours in the entertainment industry, it would be Rodriguez.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Brooke Burgess is speaking the truth. I have met him a few times while he was working for EA and as recently as November last year. And around the time he revealed that info I contacted him about he assured me that he was right since his sources came from friends/former co-workers at EA. And not all of the games will use that 3D stereoscopic technology.

On another seperate but related note I have some Retro Studios news. Metroid Prime 3 is starting to look pretty amazing at this point and will WoW people at E3 in every expect. It will use that 3D stereoscopic feature one Retro employee told me imagine playing as Samus and her 'hud' and weapon pops out in 3D away from the screen. It' s hard to explain but when we get to see it at E3 it will be amazing.
Retro Studios have also began the first real very early work concepts on another new title set to be released in late 2008/early 2009. But right now 90%+ of Retro is working on MP3.

  43. Hi Stabby. You know what? I´m already on the case. About two weeks ago I contacted Rodriguez´s agent and they gave me his biographer´s mail (I think that was her job). But, unfortunately, she hasn´t replied yet. This is an important person to contact and, I am afraid to say, this is also where I reach my limits. But I will try and contact her again, maybe I´ll get an answer.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi Anonym. First of all, welcome. Can you please give us an indication how you come to know Brooke Burgess? I would also like to know if you wrote ´WoW´ deliberately with upper and lower cases and are trying to hint at a massive multiplayer. It seems like that to me, but I´d prefer it if you said things outright. Thanks for sharing the info, though.

  45. i was just simply checking sum images when i find something quite interesting.... many people has declared that this: http://cache.kotaku.com/gaming/images/revzelda.jpg image is a fake, but really... there is not much to "fake" it, what you see is a gc controller connected and you see the game on the computer screen... then you see a quite large cord which seems to be the power cord witch disappears under the flatscreen, next to it you see a cable that looks to be connected at the frond panel of the computer. We can assume that this possible is a USB port, and according to this patent image http://www.insidegamer.nl/getimage.php?id=64158 we can conclude that is possibly is connected at the right spot on the rev...

oh btw, remeber that wierd slot on the backside of the rev, the one just above the video connection.. well it seems that it just magicly dissapeared on this: http://www.insidegamer.nl/getimage.php?id=64170 picture and many others???

You are quite right. He may also only have meant that due to the Rev´s backwards compatibility, the game was being held back for its launch. As I said, other translations were wrong in saying he explicitly stated that point.

However, he seemed to imply it, not least by wondering by which route the special features would be incorporated. Also, if you think about it, some Rev features at the very least or even a dual-platform release would only make sense. I take that as a given.

  76. Hi Caligula. I know for a fact that there are still known unknowns concerning the Rev (in Rumsfeld´s words), i.e. unknown facts of which we know that we don´t know them. I certainly know, because I have been told first hand. I have also been told that the last secret will be bigger than the controller.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Who told you the last secret will be bigger? Did he or she say it litteraly?

    btw great avatar :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. Hi Stabby. I cannot reveal who told me, but this is direct info. And it was not meant literally ;)

    ReplyDelete
  79. Could you have interpreted it the wrong way? Are you sure that your source is legit? Is he or she just as trustworthy as an important Nintendo employee?

I think you just got me more hyped than ever :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think that any source that Fal chooses to stick to instantly has more credibility than our local light shedder and the not so seriously taken seriousgamer.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Thank you both for your trust. regard this source as totally trustworthy, as much as a Nintendo employee. This is the same person that told me there wouldn´t be any more news after TGS until 2006 - and they were spot on about that.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Was he as credible as a Nintendo employee when he told you there wouldn't be any more news until 2006, or do you trust him because he was right about that?

anyway, there isn't anyone I would trust more than you, because you're the kind of person that has doubts easily (ie Sunder), so you must have some really good reasons to believe this guy.

    ReplyDelete
  83. The problem is that its just doesnt make sense that a bigger secret exists Falafelkid.
    It just doesn't add up.

You cant tell me that a build in microphone is bigger.
You cant tell me that touch sensivity is bigger.
You cant tell me parralax-mapping or cube-mapping is bigger.
You cant tell me resitance to being tilted is bigger.
You cant tell me that 2000 dollar dev-kit is bigger(I must admit though that makes justice to a bigger secret in a more magnificent way than other rumours.)

You can tell me 3d projection is bigger.
You can tell me stereoscopic 3D is bigger but that would be just too far fetched and unrealistic.
    Do you get my point?
    it just doesnt make sense?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Really Falafelkid if you got time lets talk about it and clear it up once and for all...
    let the conversation begin
    I encourage all people
    to participate.

    ReplyDelete
  85. anon: read falafelkids post about "why 3d projection makes sense" if it doesnt make sense to you...

i've also been thinking about the arguments against 3d projection, and i just want to make one small point supporting the idea... (this is a post i made somewhere else in response to another blogger who questions the idea of 3d projection for various reasons)

while your arguments against this sort of technology far outweigh my arguments in support of it, there is another point i wanted to make about 3d projection technology in regards to the argument referencing "scaring away" or "not appealing to" nintendo's "blue ocean".
I was just thinking today how pop-culture has been "warming up" the general public to the idea of 3d (and/or holographic) projection since the beginning of television... unfortunately, right off the top of my head the only two examples i can think of so far are "the jetsons" and "total recall" but i think you understand the connection i'm trying to make... i think that the general public, upon hearing news of a new machine that presented its viewable material in stereo 3d like a hologram, would think to themselves "dang!!! thats gonna be just like in total recall!!!" know what i mean?
i think a ton more people would be receptive to the idea just because they've seen it in movies...
i kinda compare this with the idea of a "hoverboard" coming out... you know? most people would say "KICKASS! thats like in Back to the Future! i NEEEEEED ONE!"
i'd bet you'd see 50 year old men out on the streets trying to ride them... whether it made them sick or get headaches in small percentages or not...
    make any sense?

    -tactics.

p.s. falafel: long time reader, first time poster... you're great!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Seriously Falafelkid, you can not tell me that Nintendo will give us glasses neither can you tell me that a hologramm will come out of it...
The controller is the biggest innovation.

There could be something internal with Hollywood like some special new technique to get high quality in a cheap way or something..
But that would hardly be bigger.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I wouldnt trust your source Falafelkid

    ReplyDelete
  88. tactics watch TGS

    ReplyDelete
  89. i dont understand what's so unacceptable about having to wear glasses for 3d... most especially non-cardboard non-blue/red ones...

is there really such a problem with wearing friggin 3d glasses? i mean seriously...

i think thats HUGE. its sooo different from normal controllers that it would have to be considered huge.

  92. There is some truth in what you say

    ReplyDelete
  93. I think that Deep Parallax mapping would be a very big deal, because the level of realistic detail them becomes so much more drastic in implimentation.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Hi everyone. I´m at work, so not too much time. Let me make my opinion very clear, again. I know there is another secret and it will be bigger than the controller. After all, that´s hardly surprising, given the hype Nintendo generated with their mysterious comments so far.

Now, I strongly believe that the Rev will be a portable console. The size limits the hardware greatly, so they wouldn´t have designed it so small without a goos reason. So there must be some kind of way of viewing Revolution games ´on the go´.

There are numerous possibilities here and some are to do with 3D images: holographic projection, VR, AR... I wouldn´t say that 3D is likely, but it is certainly possible and could make a great deal of sense, looking at the evidence.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Falafelkid we are all waiting for clarificatzion..
    please elaborate on your statement.
what would you consider bigger than interface?
    What is realistic?

Come on Falafelkid, you honestly think thats bigger than the controller?
Furthermore, wouldnt you put it past Nintendo to implement a device or something that you cant explain logically with your words that shows a hologramm or a headset??
    You must be kidding me!
Also, why do you refuse or avoid to tell us who the source is eventually all he hinted at arer just indications of things to come and nothing that would get him in trouble.

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  99. So how is it going to work if Revolution is suited for on the go affairs?
    Please elaborate Falafelkid.
and what exactly makes you confident that this secret is bigger?

    ReplyDelete
  100. As I said, I have no time to elaborate. I have gone over this a number of times before, too. Please refer to my older post Why 3D projection makes sense for details.

    ReplyDelete
  101. why would you call what i say verbal diareha? personally i dont think any 3D projection, AR, VR are going to happen also note that 3D projection would require a dark or very dim room and i dont think Nintendo would put that kind of restraint on its use,i dont think any of the type of force feedback mentioned will happen either as it would drain controllers battery to much, i also dont think you will be able to play it "on the go" either, and i dont think they will be able to use the Flash Memory as RAM either as it would not be reliable becouse some people might have the 512MB almost full and have no SD cards and it also wouldnt be as fast as dedicated RAM, what there secret is i dont know but i'm willing to bet its something non of us have even thought of yet, and weather its bigger than the controller i think is strictly a matter of opinion. i do believe though in the end we will be pleasantly surprised.

    ReplyDelete
  102. maybe they call it verbal diarrhea because you make 300-word-long sentences that dont fucking make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Can I ask everyone please to keep things calm. Anonymous, Blizz419 has been a valuable contributor to this blog for many months and he has done nothing to provoke you, so please stop with that kind of abusive language.

    ReplyDelete
  104. also note that when your at work and your multitasking, you tend to type what you think as quick as possible and just get your point across. yes i have a life and a job unlike a few of you out there.

    ReplyDelete

  115. hey anon at 1:33,

imagine if they made the matrix into 3d.

imagine the dodging bullets scene where the camera pans around neo. now imagine it being in 3d! it would actually feel like you are there. something like that would work better than just showing a movie in 3d. there needs to be movement of the camera in the scene to be truely immersive.

    ReplyDelete
  116. its amusing how i get accused of being arrogant, over confident and compensating for something when in reality i am just simply defending myself from an uncalled for insult

    ReplyDelete
  117. at 1:38

to be really immersive you need to be able to look around freely.
the process described by Cameron is the classic film conversion, but there is also now specific camera for steoscopic 3d.

The new news (because look at the press release it's one year old) is the passif glass . no more shutter glass.
    read the explanation there

  124. Hey Falafel,
Have you ever looked into the tech that Nintendo was experimenting with a few years ago where your emotions would affect gameplay. I remember reading about it, but now can't seem to find anything on it. It would take a game like Tetris, and the sensors would pick up on your stress level, and the game would get harder or easier based off that...I think something along those lines may be the "secret"...Love the site by the way, keep up the excellent work!

  126. Hey Falafelkid

Some guy on the revolution lifestyle boards has posted a very lengthy email conversation he had with a VR manufacturer.

The thing that blows me away is that that the VR company kind of mentions that the ON is real with his quote.

'I have seen the Nintendo ON video (the full one). When I first watched it, I was reminded of our tech. I was excited to see technology, but I was also disappointed that we weren't able to be the first to do it. As it turns out, we are able to be the first!'

  140. It'll certainly be interesting to see more future GC games use Revo "forward" compatability. Even better, using NWFC to put out updates for older games, such as Resident Evil 4, for example, to utilize the controller. Who knows, the LoZ Revo compatability might end up being an update you can download from NWFC onto the console itself, that allows the game to use the controller.
