Five companies, including a Bluetooth headset provider, game console maker and trucking company, are said to have signed up to market end-user products containing NeuroSky's chips.(...)
NeuroSky is working with videogame console makers on an application to sense the mood of the gamer and adjust the game accordingly. "It's like having a dancing partner who follows your lead," said Yang.
In difference to a possible Nintendo / NASA connection I wrote about in the first part of this post, this new (old) article actually mentions that the investor is a console manufacturer. That means it´s down to the big three. Now, the very idea would hardly be considered by Microsoft or Sony. So it pretty much has to be Nintendo.
If you read my old post on Neurosky, thoughts on thoughts, this technology is nowhere near as advanced to allow the gamer to steer a car or negotiate a 3D environment. If it´s just a matter of sensing the mood of the gamer and adjusting the game accordingly, that could indeed be a possibility. I remember there were rumours before the E3 that Nintendo would include this very kind of feature. If I remember correctly, the rumours related to a heart rate monitor. The practical upshot is the same, though. You are playing a horror game that knows when you are afraid. Doors unlock only when you have calmed down. That could well be a possibility.
Sorry if you have come across this before. I know this was posted two weeks ago on this Nintendo forum thread. But the story received too little attention, I guess. I didn´t see it until now, anyway.
EDIT The EE Times posted an earlier article concerning Neurosky. Here´s the interesting bit:
NeuroSky (Santa Clara, Calif.), a fabless design house that consists of U.S. chip designers and neuroscience experts from Moscow National University, is developing a dry sensor product, a signal processing chipset, and intellectual property (IP). The company also claims to have an exclusive license to brainwave interpretation algorithms, which were developed in Russia.
The company said it will embed these components in a lightweight, low-cost headset, which will interact with separate electronic and electromechanical devices in "neural-mapping" applications. Initially, it will focus on three applications: sleep/drowsiness detectors for the automotive and industrial markets; therapeutic solutions for attention deficit disorder (ADD) problems; and gaming consoles. (...)
The company, which has 17 employees, has obtained less than $1 million in funding thus far. It plans to raise some $3-to-$5 million of Series A financing in the near future.
The funding will enable the company to develop its product line, which is slated for 2006. This funding will also be used to put the chipset into production, strengthen its patent portfolio, and boost its marketing and sales efforts.
Just to show they will be able to mass-produce by 2006. Happy speculating, everyone!
Very very interesting...
ReplyDeleteI talked to Capcom yesterday. RE5 is not planned for the Rev at all. Sure, that may change at a later date, but the Rev would have to come out tops before they reconsider, I guess. They have seen the controller, so they already know the ´secret´. Sorry, I guess their decision seems pretty final.
ReplyDeletefalafekid,
ReplyDeleteyou are kidding me when you said it was not planned for revolution. re4 was the only game i loved this generation. how could they dammmit capcom dammit.
Sorry, it´s not being developed for Rev as far as I know.
ReplyDeletedid capcxom tell you or indicate any reason why, from the looks of the game it seems it has been indevelopment since last year on the xbox dev kits. and from what i have read mikami is not on the project so is most of the res 4 team. hmmm
ReplyDeleteDlphnMod, how exactly can you 'guarantee' the hardware is not powerful enough.
ReplyDeleteThat's a dumb thing to say considering Nintendo has not released ANY specs on the unit.
I found this on a forum :
ReplyDelete" Translated from the Japanese Capcom boards:
Right now Resident Evil 5 is only in development for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, we are currently planning a Revolution version as soon as Nintendo releases more info on their console since we have been approached by Nintendo on continuing the RE franchise on their next system. We replied that if Resident Evil 4 did well then it would be a good possibility and it has met expectations so far and will reach our target of 1.8 million by the end of the year. We have not yet received much information on their hardware but they said that once their controller was finished they would start sending development kits."
So all Nintendo needs to do is finish the controller then a RE sequel will head to Revolution. ARE YOU HAPPY NOW! "
But I don't know if this is official...
I think "Blogging sucks t3h p33nz0r" is on the right direction here.
ReplyDeleteCapcom as Square|Enix are company roted from a japanese culture. Therefore Capcom will like Square|Enix did with their Final Fantay series, not to lose face by keep on their RE/FF Series on Sony but a spin-of title(s) on Nintendo alà Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.
Remember that Sony and not Nintendo who helped both company's bost their
sales thnks to the playstation popularity.
But of course, both company or more exacly Capcom, Enix and Square + have had a healthy parnerships before even Sony was in the picture. And now that old man Mr Hiroshi Yamauchi finnaly stept down and Nintendo learned their misstakes and accept their defeat and honorbly make that up by listened to their partners wishes - then I think we will defenetly see the return of the kings!
oh btw, soory for my sooo bad typings. But I hope you undertood what I wanted to say.

Falafelkid, I'm not sure why Capcom would tell you if it was coming for the RS if it was a secret. Also, isn't it interesting that Takeuchi stated one of the main goals was to convey atmophere, to the point where players can feel the hot air of the desert. Where it gets so hot, they will need to seek the sanctuary of a cool cave. Sound familiar? Perhaps Capcom no longer needs to give nintendo exclusives, since the system itself will deliver mechanics unavailable on other consoles. Something to think about.
