PS3´s full power to remain untapped forever, says Sony

Sony really deserves every single word of bad press they get at the moment, I have come to accept now. Why, you ask? Because their executives are rubbish at communicating their product.

Sony Computer Entertainment exec Phil Harrison recently went on record, saying that the PlayStation3 is so powerful that "nobody will ever use 100 percent of its capability."

While that might sound impressive at face value, it is undoubtedly the most ridiculous statement someone can make about a product like this (one that is both so expensive and cutting edge) and is sure to drive potential buyers towards either competitor.

Think about it. It is like saying that a hair dryer is really powerful, but will never actually work at full output capacity. You still have to pay plenty extra for that extra power, although it will go unused, of course. Mind you, Mr. Harrison would make an excellent hair dryer, with all the hot air coming out of him these days.

I think that Harrison should be fired for making such moronic statements at a crucial time for what essentially is a great product. And I would not be surprised to see that happen soon, too. After all, last time I called for Ken Kutaragi to be sacked - and remember what happened just over a week later?

  1. It's no secret Sony marketing has been really bad of late, but this is just stupid.

Maybe i'm missing the point, and for the record i actually have a half decent development knowledge since i'm in the software development industry, but this just strikes me as a very foolish comment.

I kind of see what he meant, but for the average savvy consumer this pretty much says you're wasting your money on this product.

Personally i like to feel im getting value for money and also that i'm getting my moneys worth with each game i buy. Hearing this kind of stuff makes me think that although i might be getting the more powerful console buying a PS3 i'll probably be wasting my money each time i buy a game because it's so badly designed that no matter how hard the developers try they won't get the best out of it.

This is exactly why i'm not getting involved in the HD argument. It's pointless since this gen consoles look crap in HD, next gen maybe but right now it's like taking a step back! And an expensive one at that, 10 years my ass!

  2. I think you are misinterpretring what Harrison tries to communicate with his claim I'm afraid to say.

If anything, it's ought to underline the future proofness of the system.

Even Alex Ward of Criterion acknowledged at some point (in an interview) that last generations' potential will never be fully utilized since they only managed to squeeze out about 60 percent of the original Xbox'theoretical power. And please keep in mind that is a statement from Criterion, the company behind renderware!

What Harrison says is certainly not without rhyme and reason in my book.

  3. Anonymous has a point.

When I read what he said I just thought it was in relation to Cell. I havent followed the PS3 so closely but the Cell processor was built for various devices, if the PS3 doesnt fully use all of its power it wouldnt surprise me.

So really consumers probably pay for it, Sony should of just made a chip dedicated for gaming.

Either way Anonymouse his comments can be misinterpreted and the average joe bloe would see it how Fal has mentioned. Not good PR when Sony are really finding it hard with the PS3 now.

I am not a fan of Harrison.

  4. Games for Sega's Saturn couldn't use all the power of the machine, bc it was too complicated to write good code for the multiple cpu. Same problem with PS3 - and maybe the same fate...

  6. hey guys! On gonintendo.com people are using the Wiimote to play PC games, so far I've seen Call of Duty and WoW. I'm getting my Wii for Christmas so maybe I will be able to try it on WCIII afterall. Bottom line, you'll never know which is better till you try (Mouse and keyboard or Wiimote)

  8. Hi Anonymous. My word, how embarrassing! Thank you so much. You are perfectly correct: George Harrison is with Nintendo. Phil Harrison is Sony´s guy (and one tall guy, by the way). Corrected.

  13. Even though Phil Harrison is right, I have to agree that what he said was pretty stupid. While it's true that the core power of consoles will likely remain untapped, it's almost as if Phil is trying to limit whatever potential the PlayStation 3 has, as well as condescending developers.

I've always thought the PlayStation 3 is an overpriced Xbox 360 and it sounds like Phil Harrison has just reinforced my belief that it is.
