Nintendo to announce Wii launch event in Germany?

There are fresh rumours concerning Nintendo´s upcoming announcement of the Wii´s release date and pricing, courtesy of Nintendo Now and thanks to my good friends over at Go Nintendo. The former claims to have been given off the record info from a reliable source.
This source (...) informed us that there is a strong possibility that some new annoucements about the Wii will be made at the Leipzig Game Convention, which runs from August 24-27. We were also told definitively that Nintendo will hold its own show to demonstrate the Wii, which will likely be the console's final display before the launch. He did not give any details on kiosks--this does not mean there will not be any, he just did not know.

When asked about the Tokyo Game Show, our source said that Nintendo will likely not surprise anyone with a sudden appearance on the showfloor, but he was not certain whether or not further announcements were planned for the show. He did say, however, that new information was more likely to come at Leipzig.

Now, the wording in the article is a little unclear. Particularly this sentence: ´Nintendo will hold its own show to demonstrate the Wii´. Will this be a show to take place alongside the Games Convention (much like Electronic Arts pre-show to the UK´s former ECTS) or are they talking about a later date? In the latter case, where would it take place? If it was to take place in Japan, surely it would be a SpaceWorld.

At any rate, if their source is correct, then we will at least learn about that event at the Games Convention, if we don´t get any direct information concerning Wii there.

I happen to know a few things concerning the GC myself. I understand that Nintendo is again not too happy with allowing third parties to install Wii consoles on their showfloor booths. In fact, noone has been able to assure me that Wii (or PS3, for that matter) would be accessible to the public. However, I know for sure that Wii consoles will be playable in the Business Center area (for both exhibitors and media professionals). And Nintendo would be fools not to scatter dozens of Wiis across the showfloor, too, particularly after the strong E3 showing in May.

  1. Hi Lyxx. I don´t think you posted here before. Not recently, anyway. But no matter. What do you mean by ´great hostel´, though? A hotel? I don´t quite remember Nintendo announcing the DS launch date at such a place...?

  2. Hey Fal,
I think that Nintendo could do their own thing by doing a pre-show, something similar to the European tour. I think they will let people come in and play some new software, and then at the end address everyone and announce the date and price. Similar to what they did at last years TGS. Let some journalists come play the Wii, then go and unviel the controller to the public. But this time everyone could come.

  3. Oh, I'm so happy I have a professional visitor ticket :)
Now I hope the waiting times won't be so long. How many professional visitors and exhibitors are said to come?
On the other side, the rest of the area should be free then ;)

It is not a console to chill back and play afterwork ! This Wiimote idea is so stupid ! The games will be so short and simple, especially cheap !

Please give reasons to support your opinions. As it is, you are simply trolling. I take it that you haven´t played Wii yourself. If you had, you would know that you can easily chill while playing it. Also, most games will be neither short nor simple.

  6. you will get tired physically, especially your wrist will start hurting! Try to play Red Steel one hour! Its impossbile, it tried at E3 ! Not only the controls were bad, but also after 15 minutes of playing my hand did get tired !

  7. My only fear on Wii is getting tired. My own personal reasons though. I could never play gun games due to it. I get very tired quickly. I think will depend on the game for me (ie excite truck) but either way I will still be buying it.

  8. You know, the expectations are too high for the Wii and i dont understand this hype. I can remember the pre-launch time of the N64 ("Ultra64", they also changed the cool name!!), most people, including me, were so excited about this machine, i even did not buy a PSone and waited for the N64. But, afterwards it was all a hoax ! Big dissapointment and the change to PSone! I mean the 64 was not a real failure but it did not achieve the hype around him, after his release. Games like Resident Evil, MGS or Tekken were superior and the PSone made the race, because of the better technology in relation to multimedia(not the processor but the CDROM gave it more power)!! Nintendo is wasting too much money for nothing, they should stop with this stupid innovation crap and start producing powerful machines , which will bring the gaming industry forward ! Every real gamer out there wants graphics and a powerful machine that is for sure, only the stupid cant admit it ! I mean i have not seen anything until now that i was able to say : "Wow !!" I mean nintendo told us that we are going to say it, but the graphics suck really ! The Xbox 1 looks better !The visual aspects are vital for gaming, and therefore they should leave the gaming market, because they are slowing the progress ! Shame on them, that they have lost their aggressivity in producing consoles!
I mean look at the games please, they look exactly like they look on gamecube, Metroid 3 for ex. This is a shame, but you are big cowards or really stupid fanboys that you cant admit it!

How can you accept a machine which is only a gamecube with a new controller ????
I mean , are you blind not recognizing this fact?
You are talking about innovation, LOL ! Look at Zelda, Mario or Metroid = Innovation ? No !
Its always the same! They change only the graphics !

It is important that the consumer gets State-of-the-Art technology when buying a console !

  9. "Nintendo is wasting too much money for nothing, they should stop with this stupid innovation crap"

Ok, you do know that innovation is what moves an industry right?

"Every real gamer out there wants graphics and a powerful machine that is for sure, only the stupid cant admit it !"

Son, a "real" gamer would be a person who plays what he enjoys, I find most 2D games more enjoyable then any 3D game out there.

'The visual aspects are vital for gaming"

    And gameplay isn't?

"This is a shame, but you are big cowards or really stupid fanboys that you cant admit it!"

And you must be a graphics whore. I bet if the Wii had 360-esque visuals you would shut up right now.

"How can you accept a machine which is only a gamecube with a new controller ????"

We accept the Wii's concept of producing new ideas and extending a wider audience.

"Its always the same! They change only the graphics!"

That's what you get for being a graphics whore.

"It is important that the consumer gets State-of-the-Art technology when buying a console!"

Wii-mote, DS connectivity, Online system, Downloadable content, I see a state of the art console.

Totally right, dp. I am sure Anonymous has never played Wii. I previewed Red Steel in April and I actually did play for an hour (which would have been impossible at E3, by the way). I even played standing up and I never got tired. In fact, I kept on playing the shooting range demo level over and over, simply because the input method was so much fun. So, don´t worry about these kind of comments. They are totally unfounded.

  13. Yo , after reading your comments, i must really add that everyone of you is a real noob, in relation to gaming. You are speaking like communists, supporting the weakest and talking senseless things.
You are the one, who always says: We dont care about graphics, we have gameplay ( like the others dont, think of GodofWar, idiots! ), but
Ywhen other consoles get games like FF or MGS than you look like a greedy dog and wish you could play also in such a quality. You know, in fact you are so much in your fanboyism that you even cant critizise your "sellingyoufordumb" company ! That has nothing to do with fanboyism! You know why i am doing criticism over "BigN" (not nowadays!) , because i do like them, but they have changed a lot, and in my opinion in a bad way ! They are destroying the classic type of gaming ! You cant change the whole market by only producing a new peripheral, not at this time, maybe when Virtual Reality is possible with extreme good hardware, but not with this kind of weak machine!

You really haven´t played Wii. It´s a powerful machine, graphically speaking, and a significant step up from GameCube. Games like MP3, Red Steel and Project H.A.M.M.E.R. looked spectacular - and played great. And the Wiimote will prove to be the biggest innovation in the otherwise stagnant console hardware market.

  16. I hope so, and i am ready, or eager to see the wii in action. Maybe then, i will change my mind, but also the whole secrecy about the launch date is killing my last nerve!

I think also that nintendo is going to drop the bomb at Games Convention!

And another question is, why is nintendo not showing some pics from the new zelda? Could it be that the Wii version will be very different, also in terms of graphics?
Although, why is nintendo not showind any other game pics? Is there maybe the last secret? Because every visitor of the E3 has played on gamecubes and not Wii - Stations ! Was it a strategy to protect something or to mislead the competitors ?

Well, I´m glad you see things this way now and we were, perhaps, able to change your mind. Let me guarantee you: although I am not at all convinced of Sony´s newest offering, I am very much looking forward to playing some more PS3.

  18. Hey guys, feeding the trolls is funny lol, but troll this, graphics whore, why are you a fan of ps brand when,technology-wise, the whole world and his wife know they are the weakest? Now your only arguments seem to be based on POWAH and GRAFICKSX. Interesting...

    Apologies.

If im right about Leipzig i think i will eat a hat. Bring on the Wii.

  19. I’m going to play devils advocate here and say that hardware power does matter. I am not saying that a game can not be fun or enjoyable with out HD graphics (current generation). There is much more to processing power then graphics, some examples of these are games physics such as rag-doll physics instead of static death animations. But this goes beyond rag-doll effects; advanced collision detection is also a valuable asset that comes with high-end hardware. It is almost impossible to get a RTS game to run on any of the current generation consoles (at least run well). In this day and age MMO are becoming more popular along with single player games like Spore that require massive amounts of resources. If a console cannot support a game that will have hundreds if not thousands of units/actions onscreen simultaneously that will affect game play for that title.

According to Epic games they say that the Wii cannot support the Unreal 3.0 engine due to its limited hardware abilities. Although they said it could run the Unreal 2 engine just fine. It should be noted that the reasons for this had nothing to do with graphics, the Unreal engine supports all resolutions (even lower then the standard 640 x 480). It was the advanced physics code that was too much for the Wii.

The reason I bring all of this up is not to bash the Nintendo Wii but to point out that if some likes to play PC games, PS3 or X Box 360 doesn’t necessarily mean that they are a “graphics whore” but may prefer different types of game play.

    P.S.
I do not own a playstation or PS2, the last console I purchased was a DreamCast. Today I mostly stick to PC gaming.
    Sorry for rambling on.

  20. Anonymous,

I can relate to the initial shock of a "weaker" machine. It was tough for me at first but then you just have to accept the fact that Nintendo is not about shaders, rag doll, and advanced physics at this point in time.

Instead they are focusing on giving us a new controller that will give us plenty of games not possible on the 360 or PS3.

Don't get me wrong, I will eventually purchase one of the two above because I do want what one of those two machines will provide. I'm just not going to pay what they are asking for right now.

360 and PS3 are essentially XBOX and PS2 with a lot more power.

Ask yourself, would you prefer a GameCube with more power or a motion sensitive aiming controller? Would you prefer to watch your enemies die in real time calculations or aim at them in Red Steel? Me, I pick both. The thing is that your not going to get both in one machine. It is in fact cost prohibitive.

So if you want new games that you can play with your family get a Wii. If you want the graphics and physics go with one of the others.

Just accept the fact that for Nintendo to have followed the route of 360 and PS3 would have been death. To have had the controller and the specs would cost too much.

As for getting frustrated about Nintendo's lack of news, that is your problem. Maybe it is time to get a hobby to pass the time. Perhaps some wrist curls to expand your gaming stamina from 10 minutes to 20 minutes ( Just playing with ya ).

If a controller that provides new types of games and fun is not for you, I suggest you move on.

Good luck with your future gaming,

    D-Bone

  21. Hi D-Bone,

I think I should point out that the 10:10 was mine and no others. I know that can be confusing since all none member post are marked anonymous, perhaps I should have specified that it was my first post. Personally I don’t care about Nintendo’s lack of release info or Sony’s lack of info for that matter. As I mentioned in my post I am a PC gamer, yes we do exist : )

The main point of my post was that there are different types of game play. That goes beyond both controller and graphics. Physics and large scale simulation games are just some of the examples I posted.

I will also agree with you that there should be a console that supports both. I would also go as far and say that it shouldn’t be about the console but the developers and the software that they make. In the end it will be up to the quality of the titles and not the console manufacture.

  23. 10:10,

You can sign your name at the bottom or use the "Other" option to avoid confusion.

I agree there is a lot the Wii is missing out on due to a lack of power. The thing is, everything has a cost and Nintendo has decided what we are going to get based on cost.

I think they are a smart group of people and have found a sweet spot as far as Wii specs are concerned. To further elaborate, adding 100mb to the ram may not give that much of a performance boost or may put it above their target cost. I'm not going to try and figure out what that sweet spot is.

I guess my point is, we all know what the Wii is so there is no point in dwelling on what it is not.

    Thanks,

    D-Bone

  24. We are the ones who are enjoying or observing the progress in the gaming industry nowadays. We were the ones who saw consoles come and consoles go, we will be the ones who will see and play. But one thing makes me proud, i realisized that to be a gamer of this and the last century is a privilege. We did play with the pioneer consoles and we made what gaming is today. Can you image that in 500 years the people will not talk about a NES or even get the chance to hold one.
We will not see, what will happen in the far future, in relation to gaming, but one thing is for sure, even in heaven we will play games !!
