Pre-E3: Red Steel exclusive
Here is a story I still owe you people with a few interesting infos thrown in. In early April, I was exclusively invited to Ubi Soft Paris to test Nintendo´s upcoming console and Ubi Soft´s ambitious shooter Red Steel, formerly codenamed Katana. There were only a handful of other media people attending, since this was meant to be a ´Game Informer´ exclusive. The German magazine ´Game Pro´ managed to squeeze into the deal too. And that magazine was kind enough to put me in touch with Ubi Soft when I found out that they were onto a big exclusive. But let´s get to the good part first: here are the four high-res screenshots, as well as the nine low-res ones, straight from the press kit:
At the lengthy introduction, the similarity of the DS and Wii strategies was stressed numerous times. Asked about the Wii´s tech specs, the developers replied that those for the DS were never released, either.
As to the development of the game, Ubi Soft learned about the controller design in late June or early July. In early August, they were shown a prototype by Iwata and received the first technical info. Later that month, they received Gamecube dev kits with wired Wii controllers. They had only just received Wii dev kits when we visited in April. All the content we played (which was a shooting range level) was running on the Gamecube kits, while we were shown some levels on a high-end PC, ready to be ported to the Wii dev kits.
The Red Steel development team is split into one team for ideas and design and one for engineering. At the time, the entire team encompassed 85 people and counting. They were assembled from various teams, most notably Ghost Recon 2, Rayman, BGE, Prince of Persia.
They correctly pointed out that old controller types spawn gameplay that is about timing, i.e. pressing and holding buttons. Now, it was about movement. The challenge was to balance big, strong movements with subtle and more relaxing challenges. From a development point of view, the challenge is to organize the player´s 3D space. All different moves have to be different enough not to be confused by the sensors.
As Red Steel is about exploring Oriental culture from a Western perspective, the inspiraton for the game lies within movies like Kill Bill, The Last Samurai or Batman Begins - not martial arts movies. In most movies, however, swordfights are portrayed at epic lengths, while real Katana fighting is very short-lived. The game will opt for the more realistic portrayal, instead. Hence, about 70 percent of the game will be spent using guns, only 30 percent will be sword action. 30 percent of the game will take place in Los Angeles, 70 percent in Japan.
My first impressions of using the controller were that it takes only a minute to adjust to. Then you are raking in the kills. At first you think you are just getting lucky a lot. Then you realise it´s not luck. It´s experience, since we have pointed at things a million times before. You get the feeling of suddenly sitting down and playing the piano beautifully when you have never had a lesson in your life. It´s almost like discovering an unknown power in you.
We got to play a shooting range level, which was well animated and had good level design. Nevertheless, it got boring the third time round. Yet I continued, because the controller method is kind of innately fun. It seemed just so original. The cable connecting the Wiimote and nunchaku attachment is sufficiently long for shooting. It may be different for swordfighting. The development team was hoping that the length would be extended.
An interesting point mentioned by the team was that conventional controllers only enabled fairly flat level design (with enemies standing roughly at the same level). Coordinating two analogue sticks in full 3D (front/back and left/right, as well as up/down) was just too difficult. The Wii controller truly enabled the team to place enemies on different levels. Also, the player can target and move faster with the Wii´s controller.
My first impressions of the graphics were that they were certainly sufficient. As the entire level was still running on the Cube kits, the final graphics would look even better.
Prior to the trip, I had to sign an NDA that expired May 10th. Unfortunately, I was unable to post all this info then because of time constraints. Hope you enjoy it nevertheless. As far as I know, there is some fresh info here, if only in the screenshots.
Lovely to hear I hope this game becomes popular enough to warrant a sequel. The ideas behind the game are amazing enough but a sequel would help fix what was broken...On a side not have you heard any other rumors at E3 concerning a Kid Icarus sequel Fal?
ReplyDeleteVery interesting, for Cube dev kits Red Steel looks really nice I wonder how it'll look like on the Wii. :-)
ReplyDeletecool
ReplyDeleteFrom E3 reports, Red Steel didn't get too much good reports on the controls, mainly the swordplay. How did the sword elements feel to you?
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear from ya fal, better late than never. :) God I wish I was in your shoes. Lucky lucky. So yeah, any other things you've been hiding from us or what? ;)
ReplyDeleteHey, an update.
ReplyDeleteHi Kraid, hi everyone. I know you are all very concerned with that question, whether the Wii games at the E3 were running on actual hardware. I cannot speak for Red Steel, because I didn´t play it myself, nor did I ask Ubi Soft. But another large publisher, close to Nintendo told me that the games were running on the final consoles. There were no Gamecube dev kits hidden in the stands. That is what a reliable third party tells me. Nintendo has not yet replied to my calls.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter too much whether the hardware running the games at E3 was final or not, if developers hadn't received that hardware well in advance of the show. If the games had been running on GC hardware until close to the show, they wouldn't have been able to do much to improve the graphics beyond that when moving over to the final hardware if they didn't have a good deal of time.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous.
ReplyDelete(...) if they didn't have a good deal of time.
I agree. Consider that Ubi Soft´s project is one that Nintendo considers a vital third party title. And they received the first Wii dev kits only in April.
Incidentally, those kits are tiny. They are only about 30cm wide, black and have a funky little LED light running around in a circle.
Hello Fal.
ReplyDeletenice having you back post something again ;)
I kida wonder "opps, I can see the mukry clouds comking" if you know anything more about Hollywood/Broadway tech that you CAN'T tel us?
yes or no thats all.
thnks for great ride while being in your blog Andreas! And goodluck to whatever you do in future, eventhough had hope to work with you about some projects of mine, but I see that you have otherthings to do ;)
cheer!

Hi Silver. Thanks for your comments. This blog isn´t closed yet, though. I will post plenty of exclusive update in the next few weeks. Again, I aim to post videos of my interviews with Satoru Iwata, Phil Harrison (Sony Computer Entertainment), Robbie Bach (Microsoft), Cliff Bleszinski (Epic Games), Todd Hollenshead (id Software), Peter Molyneux (Lionhead Studios), Doug Lombardi (Valve Software) and Denis Dyack (Silicon Knights). So stay tuned.
ReplyDeleteAs far as a cooperation is concerned, please remind me again what it is that you had in mind. I´m busy for the next few month (with that music clip, especially) but it´s not out of the question in autumn.
Yo! More news on Wii.

Nice update yet & Thank for the picture. ^ ^
"The ideas behind the game are amazing enough but a sequel would help fix what was broken"
ReplyDeleteI find that a rather amusing statement considering that neither console nor game have been released yet.
Also, considering how few people have actually played this game, I don't see how you can declare any part of it broken.
Let's just wait for it to be released shall we?
It looks ugly and like the gamecube or xbox. Im going to buy the PS3 with the BluRay Player! I dont care about people who are talking like communists about the price ! The PS3 is worth the price, because just look at the specs !! Im sick of you dumb words about innovation and fun, because imo the other systems deliver more !!! Just look at the PS2 ! You are a shame for the gaming community !
ReplyDeleteAnonym.
ReplyDeleteYou are a shame for the gaming community !
Haha. That´s entertaining, man. Funny, funny stuff. If you look up the terms ´trolling´ and ´fanboyism´ in a dictionary there should be a photo of you, mate.
Hi A-R.
ReplyDeletelastly, i can reveal that sony decided on including gyroscopes as early as september or october. that is why it is even more puzzling that they only had one meagre demo to show for it.
Those are my words. Please cite them as such.
Fanboyism !!! LOL !! I knew you have nothing better to defense yourself. You know what, the only weapons you have to defense yourself is: innovation, fanboy... Man i have pity with you, because you know nothing about gaming you noob. You call me a fanboy!! LOL!! Man i have every machine in my home, machines that you havent heard about them. Yes, i also have every nintendo product, but im not freaking like you. Because im able to critize the whole situation in the gaming market. You know what, you are the sort of people which someone can cheat rapidly. Like N is doing, giving you a gamecube only with a useless controller !!! Man this is waste of money. But you know what, this time i will not buy the Wii because im fed up with N. When you are playing with your Gamecube, oh i mean "Wii" (LOL), the same time im playing on my PS3, Xbox360 or PC, and this is Next Gen , believe me...
ReplyDeleteIf you look up the terms ´ignorant´ , "blind" and ´noob´ in a dictionary there should be a photo of you, punk.
Anonym.
ReplyDeleteBut you know what, this time i will not buy the Wii because im fed up with N.
You see, kid, it´s being ´fed up´ with companies that is at the heart of fanboyism. You have to consider each console on its own and see its own merits. I would never diss a console for being manufactured by Sony or anyone else. I am a games journalist and naturally cannot express any such preferences.
As to your trolling, please grow up. And I would like to see you school me on consoles, mate.
P.S.: You also might want to get a dictionary ;)
Anonym.
ReplyDeletewohl mal die älteste aller news
First of all, English please. Otherwise you get deleted. Secondly, you might want to read what I wrote, because there is plenty of stuff in there that Game Informer didn´t write about.

You dont have a Wii YET and YOU WILL buy it.
I dont buy consoles based on specs, I buy it if it has good games and will buy a PS3 if it has them too. If I can afford and justify it being worth it.
Why aren't all the screenshots in 480p?
ReplyDeleteWhy are all the PS3 screens we see not in 1080p?
ReplyDeleteI'm so looking forward to using Wii. For once there will be something refreshing in the home market, just as Ds has done for handhelds. Trauma centre and Phoenix wright are just 2 of many superb examples of a complete shift in the idea of 'gaming' as it has come to be known.
With so much more 3rd party support now out there for the Wii i can see this time around why the trolls are coming out from under the bridges. I loved the PS1, liked the PS2, but from what i have seen so far am very less than impressed with Sony this time around. Has not the chief of SCEA pr dept left, ran away, hidden, whatever you want to call it. Even she cannot cope with what Phil harrison has to say anymore. This does not strike me with the utmost confidence in their product. Shame really.
@ 910do
ReplyDeleteyeah you're right! those lighitng effect looks nice and somewhat more realistic than I've seen in many years.
and if anyone have notice that games like Reed Steel and Mario Galxy have some cool "edges-on-obbjects" effects!? I might have not played tuhosands of games, but don't you guys think that those "edges" blends very nicely into the background?
/M
@ Fal.
I have your old email and hope sending you a business proposal soon.
danke
oh...wait a minute!
ReplyDeleteI just had a thought beaming down into my head. Nintendo have in many occations expressed that they wanted to open a new market via the non-gamers. Now think this:
One of these "non-gamers" might be the gamers without a console - PC gamers!
Now, how many are they? Alot I suposed. So these gamers are using monitors (CRT/TFT) which usually using much more pixels in games right?
and when Nintendo mentioned that Wii will be able to be palyed on either tv or a monitor. Could this mean that Wii graphics might be even better than HD (1280x720-1920x1080)
just a thought though :)

Great to read you again Falafelkid, as usual.

Hello Falafelkid,
ReplyDeleteIts been a while. I have a new post in my blog called ‘Wii battery supply in the feature - Possible explanation: An "expansion projector”’. I think it is interesting for you and your audience.
Thank you a lot and please send me you email so I can talk directly to you. I think it could be interesting, specially for me haha.

Really very interesting, Yanko.

Thanks Yanko. Interesting stuff. Thanks for the interesting read.
ReplyDelete"The user also needs to connect main unit 54 to a power source. This power source may be a conventional AC adapter (not shown) that plugs into a standard home electrical wall socket and converts the house current into a lower DC voltage signal suitable for powering the main unit 54. Batteries could be used in other implementations."
ReplyDeleteCould being the operative word there. It doesnt mean the Wii has a battery. Patents are patents, you need to read behind the lines sometimes. Unless you know fully about the product it is very hard to decrypt at times.
Batteries can also be external which could be a reference to something else no related to Nintendo. Batteries can also be referred differently than we know them as.
Good analysis though.

ReplyDeleteCan you post as next the interviews with the Satoru Iwata and the other Nintendo people?
ReplyDeleteWhile it seems like a cool idea I don't think The projector add-on would work very well with the Wii sensor. Not from a technical point of view, but from a portability point of view. So we can project an image on the wall but where do we put the sensor? Most people are more likely to have a tv than a wall space that would be good for a projected image.
ReplyDeleteD-Bone
very nice, yanko. i have a question for you: have you heard of a company called "interact"? they make video game peripherals. i am the proud owner of an interact LCD screen and battery that attach to the top and bottom of my gamecube... they're very cool.
ReplyDeletemy gamecube is completely portable, though the battery only lasts for 1.5 hours.
i sure do love it. i had to think of this company when reading your patent in question... with wii sitting horizontally, maybe an lcd screen could attach to the top, like my gamecube?
i sure love the light blue optics projectors. especially the idea of incorporating two of them into wii for a stereoscopic 3d image... that would be the ultimate pwnage.
i definately 100% agree with you on one thing though, the speaker *WAS NOT* the "secret" like so many people seem to believe. that is absolutely idiotic. anyone who believes that the speaker is "the secret" is even crazier than us 3d/projector types :)
thanks for the awesome read, yanko! keep up the great work!
also, anon above me, thanks for the link to that laser projector article... that's awesome. sounds like they're really making some good progress in making the picture full color! great news!

Thats a PS3, not a Wii :-P
ReplyDeleteFunny, no?
ReplyDeleteI've seen this when in our office they bought the professional model for the presentation room.
I was like "is my manager playing the wii or what???" and then I tried it and it works fine as a mouse.
The problem is I don't think it's 3D capable.
But it gives a good idea of the wii interface.

Check this out its wired but a good read:
ReplyDelete"Nintendo Wii: Final Secrets revealed
-Nintendo will hold a Space Word 2006 in late August, planning is already underway.
-Nintendo decided to withhold a great deal of knockout news from E3 for two reasons. One being that they wanted to reveal it at a show that solely featured Nintendo and Nintendo products, and two wanted to build hype close to launch day.
-Nintendo will show a radically improved sensor bar, and announce that the range from user-to-TV concern has been nullified.
-Nintendo will give a brief overview of the Wi-Fi Connect24 interface and Virtual Console, that will be demoed.
-Nintendo will reveal 13 new titles, four of which being new Nintendo IP’s to be released from between Q2 2007 through Q4 2008. One Shigeru Miyamoto himself will be producing and directing.
-One being a movie-based game from Shinji Mikami.
-Another being a Russian spy/insurrection game from Zoonami, directed by Martin Hollis (Goldeneye007 Perfect Dark fame) is to be rated AO.
-Another being a racing game from THQ called Deux Throttle: The World.
-Another being a sort of master chef cooking game.
-Another being a game called “Coolman’s Journal” from Monolith.
-Another being a game called “Uni Oku Ray“, is to be rated AO.
-Another being Suda 51’s/Takashi Miike’s “Hero’s” based on film Ichi the Killer. Rated to be AO.
-Sadness gameplay to be showcased.
-Excite Truck’s new innovative approach to Burnout-style crashes and destruction.
-Another being a followup Wii title to the critically-acclaimed Kid Icarus. Will be rated M.
-Another being a showcase of Red Steel’s furthered polish and enhanced graphics detail, as well as full 3d-tracking applied to the sword-play.
-Another being gameplay footage of Disaster: Day of Crisis, will sport mind-blowing graphics and innovative control.
-New Super Mario Galaxy footage will be shown where you manipulate momentum and manipulate environments with the Wiimote to move Mario indirectly.
-Space World 2006 will last 120 min. and Shinji Mikami and Martin Hollis will make appearances. Mikami will also announce a Resident Evil 4 Ultimate Edition for Wii that utilizes the innovative control as well as include everything the PS2 version had and much more. This will be playable. Also will promise a Resident Evil 5 version of Wii to ship simultaneously with other platform versions as well as a much later Wii-Resident Evil exclusive towards late 2009. A keynote of the main speech will probably focus on Nintendo’s philosophy to make Wii an “All-Inclusive” console, supporting all genres and age groups. Will also make mention that alongside Mario and Zelda, AO games will have a home as well for the sophisticated aging gamer.
Nintendo will reveal prices and launch date. A $299 bundle that comes with two Wiimotes, nunchuku attachment, classic game pad attachment, DVD9 attachment, wireless headset (limited) 2GB SD card, Wii sports game, plus ten free virtual console downloads. The $199 bundle to come with one Wiimote, nunchuku attachment, classic game pad attachment, Wii Sports game, &five free virtual console downloads. Launch date will be set at Nov. 10 2006 is revolution day.
-Nintendo will announce support for a modified HD-DVD format for space reasons, hencing the need for a separate DVD9 attachment. Nintendo Wii will not include or support third-party HDD initially.
-Launch titles as of right this second include Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Wii Sports, Red Steel, Call of Duty 3, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Excite Truck, Madden 2007 Wii, Super Monkey Ball: Bananna Blitz, Trauma Center : Second Opinion, Rayman: Raving Rabbids, Blitz: (working title), X-Men: Ultimate Alliance, Elebits and Dragon Quest Swords. Which Nintendo is aiming for a very appetizing launch from day one, some titles may get pushed back if not ready as a side note.
-Nintendo President Satoru Iwata will take stage and introduce “One of Nintendo’s newest best friends”, Hideo Kojima will then take the stage. Following this introduce he will go on to explain the idea behind Elebits and then announce that a new ”disruption” will take place. Going to the big screen will be shown a montage of all past MGS games followed by the Wii slogan, announcing that all past MGS major releases will be available on Virtual Console. Then news will be broken that MGS4: Guns of the Patriots will also be coming to the Wii console…with all visuals in place.
-Following that the second half of show will begin explaining revolutionary ideas embedded in Wii hardware.
-This news will undoubtedly come as a shock to everyone who had thought that Wii would not be able to compete in the graphics department. But I suppose that it is why they saved this news for this show after MGS4 was announced, later Zoonami’s game and Shinji Mikami’s game will be shown in the show as Shinji Mikami and Zoonami CEO Martin Hollis will introduce these games.
-The truth is that IBM and ATI have openly stated they are working on hardware specifically suited for Wii…why? The truth is that IBM isn’t developing a CPU at all, nor is ATI developing a GPU.
I may have lost you so lets swing back to the developmental stages of the N64. During that time an internal study was being done called “Project Reality” to allow visual, user interaction AND development to be mainly handled by procedural artificial intelligence. Needless to say this study was not ready for the release of the N64 so it was withheld until it was ready. The need for this “Project Reality” experiment was the fact that you can only push processors and video cards so far until you either create too much heat to be anywhere near consistently workable for the consumer, or two become radioactive. So something needed to be done to continue to improve visuals to meet customer satisfaction.
This AI process for visualizing, interacting with and developing games is built on the term RID. Standing for Reactionary, Instinctual, Domino AI. And can produce graphics and physics 100% true to life. The development console tool that is built for this tech can literally take nearly all the work out of producing the visuals/physics and allow the development teams to almost solely focus on story and gameplay. One demo that will be shown at the Space World show is that you can take actual video footage from say a camcorder, then translate it over to this special development console tool and be able to interact with it (switching camera angles as the A.I predicts how the objects should look and react from every angle), then map complex controls to it, and finally tweak it to become a gameplay scenario. Among other things that can be done. In essence this takes the majority of work out of the development of the graphics, allowing developers to scale the visuals to anywhere they want with a very user-friendly set of tools allowing visuals akin to an art deco style 1940’s to 100% real world realism. I could get into the deep technical jargon of how this is done but it will be much easier to understand if you just go to Space World this year.
The “revolutionary” components of the Wii console are really from a development sense that the consumer will reap the rewards from. As I said before IBM and ATI are not making processors and video cards. They are building what Nintendo has dubbed “bridges” that will support and regulate the parameters of the advanced artificial intelligence. The two bridges will not function in the same way as CPUs and VPUs they will become (in the final product) one structure that will operate and communicate seamlessly. The bridge that IBM is responsible for will handle physical interpretations, and predictability etc. The bridge ATI is working on will handle structure, basic instinct patterns, etc. As I said I could get more into that kind of stuff but you wouldn’t have any idea what I am talking about. My job here is to train other techs to introduce this new technology to developers and teach them how to apply this radically different albeit much cheaper and easier process into mainstream development practice.
This reason this has been kept so far under wraps is that Nintendo since finalizing the code and hardware had to patent it extensively. Which is a very expensive and tedious process, every single line of code from this technology has been patented. So that means that Microsoft and Sony could release three or more consecutive generations of consoles and still not being able to come close to the graphical/physics prowess of the Wii console. The Wii console will also have a sound card that will support Dolby Pro Logic 2 sound (at the moment). The AI bridges will be inclosed inside the very sleek and compact Wii console (the actual module the bridges are housed in is quite small). This console also produces very little heat.
What makes this an ideal decision if a drastic one at that is that it is extremely inexpensive seeing that extremely complex A.I is simply command line and leaves no room for error, which made this an extremely unforgiving project to undertake. Since truly good A.I. must be flexible and robust enough to make theoretical “foresighted” decisions so to speak it was very difficult to create the interface. Which is also why A.I. is often the weakest element within game design. Since very generic use of silicon was used in the process and everything technologically functions on a command-line AI interface (the development console tool being a GUI that acts as a shell to simplify the development process) and finally the chip or “bridge” yields are 100% consistant with the target performance. Unlike the manufacture of CPUs or VPUs. which enormously heightens the price of manufacturing generic modern consoles. What the end product yields is something that will drastically shake up the way games are developed and visualized while retaining the same visual result just on a much higher scale.
What I have described to you is something that only internal people here and first party and only a few second party developers are partial to. Nintendo has created a brand new interface for the development community to take advantage of. While being able to produce fully interactive environments and character models in almost pure realism, they have ended the “graphics war” and will be allowing development teams to produce any type of visual style they wish very quickly and allotting more time to the gameplay and story. This process also make developing on Wii much cheaper because a good portion of a game’s budget goes toward rendering visuals and or physics. Another good portion goes to marketing which is mostly handled by the source company and publisher.
Think of this change in development like the change from the original I believe DOCTOR DOS interface when it was bought by Microsoft and a little bit of code was tweaked released MS-DOS. Think of standard development practices as MS-DOS as the analogy. Then Microsoft released the Windows which made interacting with DOS (in those days at least) no hassle at all. It simplified the commands without having to memorize them and executed program with the click of a mouse. Think of the revolutionary and user-friendly introduction of Windows into the PC space as what this new development interface for Wii will do for the game industry. And now you know full well why Nintendo hasn’t let this one slip. Simply put when Nintendo stated that they are not directly competing with the other companies, they said that because they literally believe the other companies can’t compete with them. Also notice how as developers close to Nintendo will quickly say the Wii is very easy to develop on they are just as quick to either change the subject or elaborate more broadly. This shows just how deep the NDA goes.
Something else that will be revealed is what everyone has been wondering which is what is housed under the flap on the front of the Wii. I will be happy to share that with you. What is under is a camera/sensor that will be able to assist the sensor bar with certain games and also allow the user to record/stream video, take picture and the like. In action this flap will automatically open when certain game use it or when it is needed by the user. Which can be done in-game through the “Home” menu to access the camera and video functions.
I am glad to be able to bring you possibly the first ever actual true evidence of Wii and I hope you and your readers enjoy it. I know a good wealth of people will deny me or say am I a liar or whatnot, or it is impossible what I explain, but I can understand that. So many others have made false claims and been flat wrong, but I do guarantee that everything here is 100% true about Wii. If anything I know skepticism is a part of the community, so for everyone who is let the announcement of Space World 2006 be my first truth. I ask please if anyone has questions about anything I have mentioned, I do know a great deal about the some games I have mentioned here, but would not like to get overly technical here about specs or hardware, most people will just not understand. Please if you want to ask and I will do my best to answer any questions.

No, not simply because I want to believe (I couldnt care less what they were running on), but there is evidence out there to suggest it was and he has not directly commented on it.

Greetings!
i actually believe nintendo themselves will not make AO games, but others will. the aging gamer has gotten what, 5 or 6 years older since last gen? if enough people demand these games, hell, even walmart will start stocking them.
ReplyDeletebtw, here's the definition of an AO game from esrb.org:
ADULTS ONLY
Titles rated AO (Adults Only) have content that should only be played by persons 18 years and older. Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity.
whoopidy doo, movies have more graphic content (nudity and intense violence) than video games anyway.
why do haters read the blog and post lol? its just stupid and a waste of time on their part
