There is no need for the flame wars between wii and ps3 fans about graphics. Anyone who attended e3 and played wii can not be in any doubt that wii offers stunning graphics that are a marked improvement over the gamecube. As i have said before, the graphics shown at the pre-show press conference do not do the console justice.
Now, which games did sony have on the showfloor up and running? Consider heavenly sword. It looks great, but the draw distance is very low, since all is contained within a narrow arena. Consider gta hd. It is a great game, i am sure. But try to compare it to gt4 and you will see only small improvements. Sure, eight days or lair or assassins creed look very promising. But they wont be launching until 2007. The launch titles will look good, but they will not be visually stunning.
So, as far as the first generation games are concerned, wii can more than hold its own against the ps3. The graphics of games like mp3 or red steel really do make me say wow.
Also, here is some more rumour-mongering, courtesy of nbc. In their wall street journal show, they just stated that wii will launc in november for $250. I emailed them, asking them how they come to know this. I will publish their reply as soon as i get it, right here, of course.
Finally, some people were still wondering what system wii games were running on. I have said this before: all 27 games were running on the actual console. No dev kits were necessary.
Nintendo really stole the show. But dont just take my word for it. Read reports by the bbc and time magazine and see what they have had to say:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4767807.stm
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1191861-1,00.html
Summarizing all this, nintendo had a great show. Sony, by comparison, has a long way to go in convincing gamers why thy should fork out an extra one or twohundred dollars to buy the ps3 rather than te xbox360 (which also had a pretty solid showing this year). In the end, sony has everything riding on the blu ray ticket. Superior graphics are NOT the relevant factor here. Certainly not in comparison to the xbox360. But neither in comparison to wii. Before you doubt my words, play and see for yourself.
"play and see for yourself."
ReplyDeleteWhy must you mock me? ;p
Is it confirmed that all games were running on actual hardware? Other sites/forums are reporting that almost all games shown were running och dev kits and that the final kits have yet to reach most developers or that they're not finalised yet.
ReplyDeleteThat the "wii can more than hold it's own against the ps3" might be overstating it. Graphics-wise I think it's fair to say that the PS3 will trump the Wii by a good margin. Considering what UT2007 looks like, for example, I'd think anyone would be hard pressed to find anything similar on the Wii. Whether or not graphics matter though is an entirely different question.
Yes, consider UT2007. A game whose framerate will take a nosedive everytime 3 or more enemies appears on-screen impresses neither me nor Joe Public. HD is NOT WORTH ANOTHER GENERATION OF FRAMERATE PROBLEMS FROM MS AND SONY. PERIOD.
ReplyDeleteOh and to all of you who believe there is a chance Nitendo will publish games for PS4 or Xbox 720, WAKE UP!!
The DS makes more PROFIT every 5 seconds then the Xboxes have in the LAST 5 YEARS.
THAT IS MATHEMATICAL FACT. MICROSOFT HAS YET TO MAKE ONE RED CENT OF PROFIT FROM XBOX AND PS3/PSP ARE JUST AS BAD FOR SONY.
NINTENDO IS LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK AND THE CONSOLES AND PORTABLES WILL FLOW LIKE WINE FOR A LONG TIME TO COME.
ials... dude... you're totally losing it man. pull it together. these long-winded posts about graphics are ridiculous. the graphics look great already and will look even better in the near future, man. take it easy. chill out. everything is fine.
ReplyDeletelook at the buzz surrounding wii! it's incredible.
thanks for the great posts lately, falafelkid! tell me man, whats up with the last hardware secrets 0:)
oh, and, yeah... thanks to whomever posted that picture of Wii's powercord... it's quite obvious that it is *not* plugged in to the stand in that picture. apparently my "follow the black cord" buddy was just fucking with my head ;) it's pretty easy to do.

"PS3 will trump the Wii by a good margin"
ReplyDeleteSure it will....later. At launch I think Nintendo will have more polished games and just more selection than PS3.
A good start is all Nintendo needs to get to the mass market, and after that Sony is going to be playing catch up to Microsoft and Nintendo.
$399.99 is one thing, but I think people are going to be saying "wait just a darn minute now" when they see that $599.99 price.
Sony's president even said that selling the system at that price is still too cheap. Lots of money lost per system sold.
Ouch
"Yes, consider UT2007. A game whose framerate will take a nosedive everytime 3 or more enemies appears on-screen impresses neither me nor Joe Public."
ReplyDeleteI very much doubt that. GoW, also running on the Unreal 3 engine, seems to be doing just fine in that regard. UT2007 will do just as well. Not that it matters either way, graphics are not the be-all-end-all of video games.
"PS3 will trump the Wii by a good margin"
ReplyDeleteI was refering to the graphics when I quoted that.
PS3 will not trump the Wii in sales, its going to be the other way around.
"Sure it will....later. At launch I think Nintendo will have more polished games and just more selection than PS3. "
ReplyDelete_GRAPHICS_ wise? No, it already has trumped the Wii. My comment was directed at Falafelkids sentiment that the Wii could hold it's own agains the PS3, graphics wise. Unless something revolutionary happens in the coming 3 months that won't happen. That's not to say that the games for Wii won't look good - they will. But they won't compete with the PS3 or X360 - GRAPHICS wise.
Other than that, I agree for the most part.
"I was refering to the graphics when I quoted that."
ReplyDeleteToo late :)
Unreal Engine 3 ---
ReplyDeleteToo Human @ gamespot:
"The frame rate in the build we played definitely could use some work, though,"
Gears of War @ ign:
"There were plenty of times when Gears slowed down when there was a lot of action on screen,"
You graphics whores love to pretend these problems don't exist but they are all too noticeable and I for one am sick of them.
Epic doesn't want to bring Unreal Engine 3 to Wii; GOOD, they can keep it. Great screenshots; realtime video not soo much.
some reports say other wise.

Its great to know that the BBC and Time magazine cover this too, gets all the info out to a wider audience.
ReplyDeleteI guess games graphic-wise can only be judged if you were there (E3) to see them with your own eyes. Still, it seems N have managed to pull off this true 3D control scheme very well so here's hoping all involved 3rd parties manage the same and the rest of the industry will, yet again be playing catch-up with N. I too have a sneaking suspicion this method of input will become an industry standard.
Is it true Fal that SNK have confirmed that Wii will be their primary platform?
it's strange to me that people are complaining about "an slightly updated gamecube with a new controller"...where-as the same people seem to be ignoring the fact that the PS3 is merely a slightly updated PS3 with better graphics.
ReplyDeletethe nes to the snes was a giant leap, as was snes to n64/psx. psx to ps2/xbox was substantial...but can we say the same about ps2/xbox to ps3/xbox360. hardly! Now, a jump from ps2/xbox/gamecube to wii...most definately. graphics-wise? probably not...but on every other level, sure!
Graphics are important...i'm no doubt aware of that as many people are. But what happens when the graphics become the best they possibly can be? there can only be 9 playstations right (you've seen that commercial years ago, i hope? *note, i'm trying to be funny* note#2: i'm not very funny*) What else can people fall back on.
I've come to this blog every day since the week before e3 '05...and this is my first post. even registered with blogger to make it more official-like. Fal, keep up the excellent work.
where-as the same people seem to be ignoring the fact that the PS3 is merely a slightly updated PS3 with better graphics.
ReplyDeletethat should read: PS3 is merely a slightly updated PS2 with better graphics.
see...this is why i don't post!
lol
ReplyDeletelol
ReplyDeleteI would contest the above statement. The PS3 is a little more than a "slightly" updated PS2. Sony has had two successes in the video games industry, and they are pulling out all of the stops on this one. The PS3 represents a leap at which a video game system has the potential to be even more powerful than the average consumer pc. There is a lot of bleeding edge technology in there.
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is whats for the final product. Sony are too good at stretching the truth and manipulating peoples minds.
ReplyDeleteUntil I see UT2007 running on a PS3 infront of my own eyes it is nothing but a mere showcase.
At least Wii games look more developed; ie Mario Galaxy.
Hey Falafel I had a couple of questions. First of all IGN's bozon stated that the pointing with the revmote (or wiimote) didn't work very well. Is this true? and if so does it work for metroid?
ReplyDeleteAlso how about the great AI I heard so much about in red steel is it as good als they told us?
And finaly what wiigame is your favorite of the show?
The Wii consoles which stand next to the TVs weren't the real units. Underneath there were dev kits, although some Nintendo reps stated the Gegenteil ;)
ReplyDeleteThey were developer kits Falafelkid.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow I am going to play my Xbox 360 and enjoy the great games it has. If the Wii comes in at $149 I would pick it up. Anything over that is just not worth it from a console that doesnt look on par with the original Xbox.
devkits, huh? not the real machines? falafelkid... can you confirm this dude?

Check some HIRES (I cant stress this enough!)movies from Sonic Wildfire, Mario galaxy, Excitetruck or Project Hammer and come back...they look awesome and definitily beyond what the original Xbox can pull out. 2-3 times better than Cube means also 2-3 times better than xbox...
seems everyone is jumping on the "they were devkits" bandwagon... even rawmeatcowboy (although he clearly states that it's a rumor)...
ReplyDeleteknow how *i* know they were running on devkits and 'cubes? did you see any games at e3 in stereo3d? no? of course you didnt. the gpu is rumored to be still under construction. the games weren't running on wiis.

Someone needs to -confirm- the rumour about devkits being used, because thusfar there is no photographic or "offical" evidence (to my knowledge).
ReplyDeleteThere is however, evidence that the press conference demos may have been played on GameCubes. Check out this photo here, and tell me what they look like on the ground there http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/6126/media6vn.jpg
Fal, is there any way you can confirm or deny these rumour with prove? I mean, those GCs could have been backup units, for all we know. BOTH are running, and neither one has all 4 ports filled, so it's not exactly clear what their purpose is.
yes... please, falafelkid.

really, anonymous at 10:26? i tend to disagree. (of course you do dummy, you're "superfan" tactics! you're the stupidest fool of them all!)
ReplyDeletemaybe.
but before you start flaming, hear out the conspiracy-theory-like plan WHICH I'VE FABRICATED:
makes perfect sense: unveil "wii" (by "wii" i mean, "what nintendo wants us to think wii is atm") and give sony a fake sense of accomplishment:
"so that's all nintendos got? those graphics blow, and our controller has motion-sensing too. so much for all the hype. internet boards are all ablaze with the same discontent about the graphics. their controller is nifty, but we'll just leverage the 'HD' moniker and put them below us."
this is exactly what they're thinking right now... know what i mean? seriously. everyone at e3 was *stoked* on the controller, but all had the same complaint: the graphics really didnt look super-great. so what will nintendo do? let us all think that "wii" is "it" for the next few months... and just before launch (maybe 4wks) come out of the blue with (flamers: pay attention, here comes your ammo!) "oh, yeah... we actually didn't tell you *shit* at e3: here's the *real* revolution: 4x GCN graphics, stereo3d, and tactile/force feedback. check out Red Steel NOW. oh, and here's a starwars first-person lightsaber game too. Wii launches one month from today."

ReplyDeleteI think you have a point there when you talked about what muíght
happrend when its near the street date for Wii .
I admit that I had hoped for more from E3 this year. Although I'm not dissapointed at the graphics specifally but still I had hoped for som kind of facinated tech that would make the wii concole very unique amongs its rivals.
So now when read your input I would like to chare mine.
Well. Wouldn't it be naive to just say that all we have seen so far gonna be a wii console with a little better graphics with a unique remote/controler? Ok we know thats more "secrets" to come. But one thing came up on my mind.
what if, Nintendo realy have some unique display or graphics technologies. But they rather watch us gamers (customers), generaly and via the E3, on how "we" take "their" version of the Wii console.
Coz, if "we" shoose not to accept it (but we all did it) Nintendo maybe later be showing another version of Wii, only now with more advance technology i.e 3d display ect.
Coz if customers still like and accepted what they has been shown (E3), Nintendo wouldn't have to shell out money of something that might not be worth it for the time being. (cut cost)
And as in my previously posts, I think that Nintendo will bring this Revolution to us in form of:
1. Introducing the concept (wiiMote/the DS).
2. Introducing the medium (Wii24Connect)
3. Possibly system upgrades in form of 3d display for both Wii and the DS/GB add-on or a new concole with obove added features (maybe 3-5 years from now)

/M:
ReplyDeletei feel like you're close, but a little off-base. the way i see it is this: nintendo *knew* that sony would copy the controller, or at least try to. there are many ways sony can copy it, or at least *some* of it's functionality, before launch. nintendo knows people are always copying them... it's been happening for many years. so what did they do? they were very secretive... but they showed the controller months ago... *knowing* sony would have enough time to copy it, right?
makes no sense. what else is so revolutionary about the console? wiiconnect24? please. it sounds interesting, but that's not even something sony/ms *could* copy if they *wanted* to. their consoles (fuckin supercomputers) simply use too much power and make too much noise for it to be practical.
so what else is revolutionary? the price? whatever. 200$ is the price at which nintendo *ALWAYS* launches consoles. that's meaningless.
so what else is revolutionary? ...
...
wait... what could sony copy... hmm.
oh yeah, that's right. nothing.
there is something else big in store for us. no question. otherwise, what would Wii be? the controller only?
this *could've* been a possibility, except for one thing: nintendo has given the competitors PLENTY OF TIME to copy it. i understand that it took nintendo 4 years to develop it to this level of accuracy/etc, but look who their competitors are these days. two of the biggest electronics corporations on earth. they will be able to copy the controller MUCH faster than it took nintendo to invent it - no question. shit, all they have to do is steal a Wii-mote, buy an "accelerometer" company, hand it over, and wait. they dont even have to do anything.
nintendo has something else big. they simply *have* to. 1 year from now, when MS and Sony both have their own versions of Wii's controller, along with "core package" price drops, then what? nintendo is in the same boat the were in with gamecube - their only advantage being their awesome IPs.
nintendo is not stupid.

ReplyDeleteI agree with the last anonymous that "superfag" is an idiot. At this late stage in the game, you still think Nintendo has some trump card up it's sleeve? It's only been printed in every mainstream article that the Wii's differentiating feature is the controller. Nintendo's only been saying it since last December. But you, Pitakid, Osoko, and the rest of your ilk keep holding on to illogical assumptions. Yeah, you're right. Nintendo's secretly holding back a holographic disc player, an array of 1080p projectors that will project 360 degrees, an exclusive version of Metal Gear 5, GTA 5, and it will all cost $150. I had to break my NDA because you guys are just too smart.

Its funny that Perrin Caplin AND Reggie Fills Aime BOTH said that there were secrets still to be revealed. Also what was said in a VIDEO INTERVIEW by Reggie that they would only let out a little at E3 and slowly release info until the release day. Wii won't know all about the Wii until we own one ourselves. Oh yeah, one more thing, Perrin said one secret still had to do with the HARDWARE. Quit hattin loser and go moan on the PS3 forums about the price.

Hello, this is the first time I write here. First, thank you Falafelkid for this blog, I think it is the best one about Wii. Second, I follow http://www.revogamers.net/ for news and so; spanish site very well conducted, and good forums.
ReplyDeleteThird: guys, you think really that for 200$ or 250$ are we going to get 3D projection out-of-the-box? it would be very expensive, and against WII policy. The only thing under the flap is, perhaps, conectors. In the near future, for hardcore gamers as Kaplan said, could be released some kind of stereo-glasses, of lots of shells for the wiimote. But, in the release, nothing but a little beauty console will be released. Think about Nintendo exists to earn money, to make money, not to become reality our hottests dreams.
Fourth, I think many games were running on Gamecubes or dev kits. Specially Zelda. Nevertheless, Mario Galaxy had a very very good looking, very polished, perhaps this one runned on near-actual-hardware.
So wii'l wait to the road to TGS.
Julencin2000
julencin:
ReplyDeletethanks for your opinion. i understand what you mean, but the one thing i can't come to understand is why people think that Wiis hardware costs anywhere near 200$ to manufacture.
accellerometers and the other parts of the wiimote are actually pretty cheap at the manufacturing level. the R&D for this technology wasn't cheap, that's for sure, but remember: all the time they were researching and developing wii's controller, they were paying it off with gameboy and DS profits. it's not like they're in debt from the controller.
the gamecube-based chip architecture couldn't cost all that much either... i mean, gamecubes sell for what, now? 60 bucks or some ridiculously cheap price?
i think revolutions GPU could easily be cheap to produce while using some type of technology to split images into 3d.

DS Lite in Europe: 23rd June
ReplyDeleteNew Super Mario Bros: June 30th
http://www.britishgaming.co.uk/?p=867
Are this news real?
If someone could confirm this... then go on!
Hello "superfan" tactics. What you say is right, but think about this: pricing a product is very very hard for an enterprise. It is all about marketing first, and about profit secondly: I mean, if you have in one hand a Maserati that costs 20.000$ and in the other the same Maserati but about 100.000$, even being the same, you're going to look with different eyes both, the quality feeling will be differet. It's emotional purchasing. That's why Daewoo in Europe has changed its name to Chevrolet: I have a microwave oven Daewoo... the image is everything. Branding. The name WII has been in research for months, don't doubt it guys. A coke is water and 1% flavour, but it doesn't sell at water price, because it has a corporate image to keep. With Sony at 600$, sure Nintendo will rise price in the beginnig: they have time to low it if doesn´t sell as good as they want.

ReplyDelete"WHEN I TRY TO REMEMBER A FUN EXPERIENCE (NOT A GREAT GRAPHIC EXPERIENCE ONLY) NINTENDO ALWAYS POPS IN MY MIND"
That's also true for me. The only Non-Nintendo console I really loved (and own) is a original "Panasonic FZ-1 REAL 3DO". I hope Nintendo is going to bring the 3DO-games to it's Virtual Console - this would be sooo cool! I would love to play "Maddog McCree" and all the lightgun-shooters (I sadly never bought) to play with the Wiimote (if possible).
LISTEN TO ME NINTENDO: SUPPORT 3DO-GAMES - I WILL BUY THEM ALL!
mi amigo informante:
ReplyDeleteyeah, that rayman trailer is awesome...
i don't remember ever seeing another video game commercial where objects flew out of the screen like that in my whole life... i think it would be considered misleading advertisement, right? and what exactly did "grandpa" from the rayman commercial find so appealing about a fuckin rayman game? i mean, rayman is cool, i guess, but i just don't see where exactly the appeal was for grandpa aside from the 3d/immersive part.
*sigh* fuckin nintendo. they drive me crazy!!!
-"superfan" tactics.
yeah you 're right!
ReplyDeleteIf I'm remeber correctly.
I've seen and read a few sentence from an copy of an licence contact between 3DO and Nintendo.
This was quite some time ago. But this might not have to do with Wii at all but possibility are always there went you mention 3DO on Wii
:)
..its good to see that people now underastand the bigger picture of what intendo are actually doing - business wise...
ReplyDeleteBring in an Blue Ocean and leave the Red murky and old one behind!
/M
heh. "intendo". that's what i asked my "grampa" for, for xmas, in 1985 ;)
ReplyDeletehe went to the store, "i have no idea what it is, but i'm looking for 'intendo'"
hahaha... that's awesome.

ReplyDeleteJulencin, you dont understand Blue Ocean Strategy properly then. Pricing strategy was not highly covered but to impliment pricing in BOS your product/service needs to be priced at a price so it CANNOT be copied/immitated/duplicated by other companies therefore avoiding a Red Ocean and keeping your Blue Ocean intact. Keeping your price low enough to stop competitors entering the market.
There is a bit more to it than that but I wont go into too much detail.
$199 makes sense, $250 doesnt. Well at the current state to what we actually know about the system anyway.
@ superfan --> :P (^^*)
ReplyDeleteanyway...
those who don't know what good there is to "create" an Blue Ocean.

Wii mystery flap open? IT IS THE SD CARD SLOTS ???
ReplyDeletehttp://gonintendo.com/wp-content/photos/wiiflap.JPG
I know some of you have been saying the SD slots are in the front flap, but I don't think they are.
ReplyDeleteI enhanced this image and it shows that were the Gamecube controllers plug into, there is actually a seperate flap with 2 slots.
This is where the memory cards are going to go.
http://i4.tinypic.com/102qa8o.jpg
- Skwurl
Upon further review, I think those slots are for the GC memory cards.
ReplyDeleteDoh.
- Skwurl
Maybe SD slots are in the front flap ... But other thing too. SD too small for that flap.
ReplyDeleteI try to think of some thing more importan than USB behind the console.
... I don't know.
schleif11 don't be an ass, i saw that post on ign-wii boards.
ReplyDeletesounds like a great idea, but don't pretend to be something you're not.
Doesn't sound like a good idea to sell blank DS cards. Next thing you know someone figures out a way to write DS games to it and BOOM you have piracy.
ReplyDeleteJROD

ReplyDeleteJROD
@ jrod:
ReplyDeletei see what your point is, but piracy with ds-games already exists and you dont need a blank ds-card to play games on a ds. a movieplayer and a sd-card is enough.
you can point out the rest yourself, i think.
writing games to a ds-card, for me, now seems to be much more complicated than doing it with sd-cards.
but ok, lets change the topic ^^
MAYBE there will be something like the expansoin pak for n64, too.
or a module you can put in, that makes the wii play dvd's.
at least, i hope so :D
you now, i think the flap is too wide to just hold one sd-card. why would there be two? when wii comes out, 2-gb-sd-cards (or even bigger) will be affordable. so i think there is no need for 2 sd-slots. i think theres is a interface for some other extensions, too (for example the dvd-compatibility, as i mentioned before)
msa
I'm sure if they wanted to let you download virtual console games to your ds, they would do it wirelessly some how since nintendo is really pushing the wifi thing.
ReplyDeleteSpeculation OVER. The "Wii's" were actually Cubes and Nintendo ADMITS to it.
ReplyDeleteUpdated cubes were playing Wii games.

Dont beat about the bush Falafelkid!
Get your act together and shift lanes!

anonymous is right it is confirmed that they were just updated gamecubes, not actual revolution hardware

But something new going to come.
ReplyDeleteAnd now we know it isn't in that flap... (Maybe)
I have one thing to say about PS3, sony in general; they steal ideas. They stole the interactive controller nintendo made up, the first one that looked like a boomarang was also someelses idea, and they are now stealing nintendo's Wi-Fi idea.
ReplyDeleteThey are stealing the idea of the two package deal from microsoft, though the cheaper one with PS3 is just crappy. The people who disigned the PS3 for sony have no sense of imagination, just "hey look at that lets put that into a PS2 controller and say look it's now!"
this blog has really fallen in the shit hole

What would be the better Wii launch package?
ReplyDeleteWii, one wiimote and nunchuck - $199
Wii, two wiimotes and nunchucks, and one simple game, like Wii sports -
$250
Ya i already know it

Psyco3ler isn't a worker form nintendo
This psyco3ler video isn't nintendo secret
and
This video is a FanFiction (fan art) created by psyco3ler
... it isn't real. - Yes. It really cool and I like it. -
...but if he *did* work for nintendo secretly... that's what they'd WANT it to say...

update your blog already! come on! it's been freakin forever!
ReplyDelete@ zaro
ReplyDeleteSo Falafelkid is the Boogeyman!?
no, betelguce...
ReplyDeleteThe last secret is...
ReplyDeleteThat you can play your DS games directly with the Wii!
And the front flap hide a DS cartridge reader!
It's possible as the DS is a huge success and Wii has all functionalities to do so.
Just speculation though...
I wonder if Falafelkid is still under NDA. If not, what was he under NDA for? And why was Falafelkid insistant on saying that the Red Steel graphics were "provisional" graphics?
ReplyDeleteHe would always get quiet right before a big announcement, so maybe something's coming up soon...
Falafelkid, with the NDA for StarWars, stuck at the airport. Still. Seriously, he's living off airport peanuts. Someone should do something....
ReplyDeleteLast Wii cpu rumor
ReplyDelete"...the Wii will ship with a PowerPC 750GX CPU jointly developed between IBM and Nintendo. Nintendo says the codename of the processor is Broadway and was manufactured using a 90nm fabrication process. IBM claims the 750GX GPU is based on the 750FX processor designed by the company several years ago. The chip can run at frequencies up to 1.1GHz and includes a 4-way set-associative single core with 1MB L2 cache."
... block diagram of PowerPC 75GX
http://www-03.ibm.com/chips/power/
powerpc/newsletter/jun2003/images/
ppc750gx_92.jpg
Also
PowerPC 750GX was 0.13-micron (~130nm)
die size 51.9 mm^2 (cell 200 mm^2 up)
Wii also don't have Dolby Digital (but have dolby surround)
... So Wii will have much space to adjust. or need to reduce price (for other device).
Wii seem to have second secret :
