e3 update #2again, hi. a number of questions in the last comments section, which is unavailable to me through my pda software. firstly, i am noting overall confidence with regard to wii. my informant regarding the star wars game is a very senior industry insider that is not affiliated with a specific developer or publisher. he believed that nintendo will steal the show. secondly, my first news item will air on wednesday, 8pm CET on rtl2, which is available via cable and satellite all over europe and parts of north africa. watch it because there will be some very exclusive footage in it. perhaps someone could record it, upload it to youtube or google video and post the link here. you may understand why i havent been able to post frequently in the last weeks.

ReplyDeleteWii Development Costs Phenomenally Low
"During an analysts' conference call yesterday, THQ president and CEO Brian Farrel shed some light on their plans for the future. Needless to say, these plans involve the Wii, and Farrel was more than eager to talk about Nintendo's latest console. THQ's president talked about their upcoming Wii games and such, but more interestingly also revealed some things about the development process.
"We showed in a press event recently a SpongeBob game using the Nintendo Wii and Wii controller," Farrell said, "and standing there watching very jaded game journalists hoot and holler on a SpongeBob game was actually quite relieving. One of the things we like about that platform is the development costs...on the Wii are nowhere near what they are on the PS3 and Xbox 360. That's something that's quite encouraging."
As you can see, THQ is pretty excited about the Wii, as developing games currently seems to be a lot easier and less costly. One of the main reasons for this, is the fact that developing for the Wii closely resembles building games for the GameCube.
"The Wii wasn't a whole new programming environment," Farrell stated. "So we had a lot of tools and tech that work in that environment. So those costs--and again, I hate these broad generalizations--but they could be as little as a third of the high-end next-gen titles... Maybe the range is a quarter to a half." Great news, which may peek the interest of thus far coy third-party developers.
So far, THQ has announced SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and a game based on Pixar Animation Studios' upcoming movie Cars. "As you probably know, our portfolio maps very, very well to what we think the Wii demographic is going to be," Farrel said. This last statement somewhat clashes with Nintendo's philosophy to make the Wii a console that caters to every segment of the market."

ReplyDeleteIn other news, or more specifically THE BEST NEWS EVER, a new Star Wars game is rumoured to be in development for the Wii. This in itself is brilliant news obviously, but the point is that you'll be able to use the remote controller like AN ACTUAL LIGHTSABER. That's all we know so far, but isn't that enough?
More news soon. We're going for a lie down.

ReplyDeleteials is funny! he totally pwnt "bumrash" yesterday XD
ReplyDeletefalafel... great news about star wars. thanks for that. wii will spread like wildfire.
a (no-so-)funny story... i was at a buddy's house yesterday for a barbeque, and i was talking videogames with a "Game Crazy" (videogame store) employee. he knew all about Wii, but my cousing Luke happened to come into the conversation just as i was saying, "i've never been so excited for something ever, not even christmas!" and my cousin luke asked me, "oh! cool man! so are you really excited for playstation or xbox?" ...like those were the only two choices. i said "DUDE. NINTENDO. what the fuck." and he knew absolutely nothing about Wii at all. nobody there did, except for the game store employee guy... i was astonished. most of these guys were your typical "GTA/Madden" gamers, so i started trying to explain the controller... they were mildly interested. i made an example of how you'd play Madden, however, and they were all very interested. then i told them that it was likely to launch for 2-300$ less than PS3 and they all agreed that they'd "probably be getting one." great news!
sorry for such a long story, hope it makes some people happy. sure made me happy yesterday to spread the word! nintendo should be fuckin' paying me, man!
ials: i think i'm most excited (loz:tp aside,) about red steel so far... i know that sounds cliche` but god damn, it looks/sounds so friggin cool. we'll see if i change my mind after e3.

HAHAHA this is great! i guess in that TIME magazine article with Shiggy he had this to say about traditional controllers:

they also had this image of him doing the "L" loser symbol on his forehead:

For the first time in history THE IALS isn't sure what to make of the situation!
Shall I be happy now, or shall I cry?
-IALS
IALS,
ReplyDeleteDon't worry. You've seen the Red Steel screens. It's one of two things.
1. The DS version smacked together with images of people using the Wii-controller for illustration purposes.
2. Very early screens of the Wii version.
Go to IGN and check out the images from the latest cube version of Tony Hawk. The Wii version should be slightly better.
Bank your tears of joy or sadness on Tuesday when we see Metroid Prime 3. That's when we'll get a good feel of what to expect.
It's funny. My wife bought me a PS2 the other day and the first game I wanted to play was ICO, which came out in 2001. I played God of War first and am enthralled with that game, and then I put in ICO. The graphics looked noticeably inferior to God of War. My point, well, those games were on the same machine and appear light years different in graphical quality...I think we are getting to a point where the game engine code and art are more important than raw machine power...so, expect gorgeous games from the Wii.
D-Bone
Aah,ok now I get it!
ReplyDeleteI assume, Downhill jam is supposed to
showcase Wiis N64 compatibility.
:)
-I...
Downhill Jam was originally a PS2 game before it went to development on Wii. These are either old PS2 screens, an unnanounced PSP version or Activision has alot of 'splainin to do. I mean we're talking about Wii, a system that is twice that of a GC, and even the GC Tony Hawks look better than that. So something's up.
ReplyDeleteif it's the real deal, then it's obviously very early and needs more time in the oven, but i'm expecting to see a confirmation that those aren't actual Wii screenshots.
lazyfatbum
wow what a hypocrit ials is.
ReplyDelete.I think we are getting to a point where the game engine code and art are more important than raw machine power...

ReplyDeleteI dont have my camera here! sad But just go buy it at your nearest drug store! They'll have it. If I was able to buy it here in Montreal, you can find it anywhere in the US!
ReplyDeleteI'll describe the screens:
1. Zelda riding Epona in Hyrule fields. We see the castle really far away. Draw distance is huge!
2.Link beside some lava! Even better then RE4!!!
3.Link with Midna in some big open space glowy forest! Its not in the twilight, so Midna has the same form outside the twilight. The forest is really awesome, it looks like the one in Oblivion.
4.Link is on a boat having a fish in his hand. Hes with a cute little girl with a fisher hat!
5 & 6. Link in wolf form with Midna in the twilight. They gave the twilight a new awesome look. It was in black and white before, now its all glowy, a bit like in Sand of Time in the garden. Awesome!
7. Link has big iron boot and walk on the ceiling! Looks like we will get a dungeon even crazier then the Water Temple in OoT grin
Sony's new controller has motion sensing. Nintendo was right all along...Nintendo will always expand the definition of gaming, and others will always copy them.

I really didn't think Sony would have the guts to rip a nintendo innovation again..seems i was wrong
ReplyDeleteThey really are fucktards.
The PS3 will make you say WoW................$499. Fuck you SONY you dam copy cats.
ReplyDeleteThe Wii-volution will win this war ;)
First they say they don't rely on gimmicks and then they copy the wiimote functionality (in a bad way) AND the Xbox-button in the form of an PS3 button... that's just low
ReplyDeleteWell we all knew it had to happen sometime.I think when the bods at Sony saw the Wii controller they started getting worried. They didn't want to get left behind and put something slap-dash together and make a shitty Wii rip-off.
ReplyDeleteWhere's your ''gimmick'' now Sony?
OMG Tomorrow starts E3!
ReplyDeleteRegarding PS3 motion sensing abilities, I saw this happening and made a comment a few days ago. I don't think it's such a big deal. It lacks the ability to point at the screen which is the real selling point of Wii. Dual "No" Shock 3 will NOT be able to swat flies, hit tennis balls, aim at metroids, launch arrows with Links bow, roll bolling balls, make Mario jump, or accept attachments such as the nunchuka...and it will cost half as much. Sure, we don't get HD, and that is big for me since I have a nice Big Screen TV, and I'll probably eventually get a PS3 for the Blue Ray player ( if it becomes main stream ) and High Def games...and when I do, I'll be glad it at least has tilt sensing. Nintendo has done it again, they have taking gaming to another level. If I was Microsoft, I would be shaking in my boots.
ReplyDeleteD-Bone
Indeed, seems more like a gimmick, much like the eyetoy.
ReplyDeleteDidn't see that one coming...
ReplyDelete(PURE SARCASM)
I just knew that was going to happen, actually I've just won 10 bucks cause I bet a friend that was bound to happen, I didn't exactly think of them being so cynical doing it, I was thinking more of a perypheral
By the way, SG007's blog is down, during E3 hahahaha, now isn't that convenient... poor guy
Anyways can´t wait for tomorrow when the real goods are shown, not being fanboyish, but to be honest the only thing that got me excited is the new trailer ofr MGS4 although I have yet to watch it
Well, se ya later everyone, tomorrow's the big day
If Nintendo can get the controllers for the Revolution/Wii spot on, Sony will have to conced ddefeat somewhat.
