Nintendo-Revolution down awhile

Now, this is a brief rumour round-up, as well as my last post before E3. I have just entered into a preliminary agreement to develop a concept for and then shoot a music video (I don´t just work as a game journalist, but also as a freelance producer for various kinds of projects). Part of the clip may be shot in Los Angeles just after E3, which is the reason for having to rush a first concept and storyboard.

Despite my intentions, this clip, alongside my regular work in the newsroom, will keep me so busy over the next few weeks that I will be unable to keep running this blog. Please appreciate that this is a professional project and this blog will simply have to take second place. Thanks for understanding - see you after E3!

Andreas

1.) (NO) END SOON

Mr. Inc´s blog is offline, finally. In a last-ditch effort they have published a silhouette of what looks like two game characters. Here is their last post in full, just for the record:

ATTENTION! NINTENDO VIRAL MARKETING HAS STARTED!!

I have to remove this blog within 24 hours after this post. I’ve still good connections with one member (friend)of the team which said they’ve been warned about the following thing!

ALL PAY ATTENTION TO ALL THE “APRIL FOOLES” THAT ARE COMING. THERE WILL PROBABLY BE A LOT REGARING REVOLUTION HARDWARE/GAMES, BUT ONE OF THOSE APRIL FOOLS IS ACTUALLY REAL AND IS BEING RELEASED BY NINTENDO UNDER AN ANNONYMOUSE NICKNAME AT IGN/N-SIDER NINTENDO FORUMS.

I’VE NOT BEEN TOLD WHAT EXACTLY THIS “APRIL FOOL” IS, BUT IT’S SUPPOSED TO FIT WITH MY PREVIOUS POST.

BE ALERT, NINTENDO’S VIRAL MARKETING HAS STARTED WHICH WILL BUILT UP THE HYPE LEADING ALL TO E3 2006 !!

Whether you hate me or No End Soon, the Nintendo fans will love this month.

Goodbye forever!

PS, please confirm to yourself at E3 this blog was actually REAL ->
REMEMBER AND COMPARE TO PICTURES AFTER E3 2006 !!
Look what uncle bad guy has in his hands!

PROBLEMS, SORRY . . . . . . .

Almost a brave decision to post a pic like that. With it, they will remove all doubt about them being impostors come May.

2.) Dubious interview about Zelda: Twilight Princess Rev controller features

Nintendo fan site The Hylia has apparently interviewed Eiji Aonuma, Zelda: Twilight Princess producer.

The game will be released closer to the Revolution launch, making it essentially a launch title. (...) You can control the sword and shield with the unique setup of the Revolution controller, allowing the player to experience combat in Zelda like never before. When you play the game on GameCube, the fighting mechanics are based in a third-person perspective. However, on the Revolution, the battles shift into a first person mode, which allows the player to really feel like they are dueling a foe rather than playing a game. You should see some of the boss battles in this mode.

Of course, you can use the controller to aim your bow, your hookshot or your boomerang, as well as some other items. The amount of force you use while handling the controller will also determine how far or fast your items go. There are also some puzzles specially developed on the Revolution version that will require the input from the Revolution’s controller. These puzzles will be solved a different way on the GameCube. (...) We’re still considering an online Zelda, either for DS or Revolution, but I can’t speak anymore about it at this time.

However, The Hylia has been offline for more than a day and the editors have not responded to my mails so far. The excerpts are courtesy of Codename Revolution. I mailed the site´s owner and this is the response I got:

I'm not allowed to talk about it. It's no longer up, that's all I can say without any futher consequence.

Sorry.

My guess here is that it was fake. No disrespect, but it´s unlikely a site like that would be able to secure such an interview.

3.) All the rest

This is where I am being overtaken by time constraints, unfortunately. I would have wished to be able to post in detail about Matt´s chore list in that IGN discussion and various other rumours going around, some of which are quite intriguing. But I simply can´t. Sorry. It was a pleasure serving you for so long (I only hope I have) and I am pretty sure that I can be back after E3 to tell you all about Revolution. In the meantime, please use my link list, which I believe to be rather comprehensive. And, if you would be so kind, please use the comments section to keep me up-to-date with any recent developments. Looks like the tables have turned now ;)

  5. Umm the thing is, that first paragraph in the Hyrule interview is that I did NOT see it when I read about the FPS etc. I read through the whole thing when it was just published online and it was not there. Because I was so annoyed that the interview was hyped to be some major leak only to be disappointed by no new info. GAF also came to the same conclusion.

Also the guy who did the interview holds many records on Zelda and apparently is known well and respected. Some of the hype going into it did seem a bit far fetched but wouldnt surprise me if it was real.

  9. Ahh man, you're always away for the big news times - you should let me take over lol, anwyay look, I just posted this over @ IGN.

    http://boards.ign.com/revolution_general_board/b8263/114141710/p1/?0

Since the other thread has turned into a Link vs Ganon 2000 vs LoZ:TP disucssion I thought I'd post a new thread.

Ok, so here's the deal, an industry insider by the name of "Randomfile" posts and is a mod on the gametrailer forums - he's basically proven he's an insider, if you're not convinved read through the other thread. He posted three things regarding Revolution, I'm using one as the topic of this thread - head over to the other thread to discuss the others.

Now out of the three quotes, this is what caught my eye the most:

"I've been thinking about whether or not a blog post on this was ill advised for three days now. Should I give away too much information, I'll have the fires of hell rain down on me (Also known as: Nintendo's Legal Dept.) and if I give too little, I'll have you guys after me until E3.

    Here goes....

I told those of you who visited the Revolution thread (Before the separate area existed) that I had seen demo Revolution footage. It was exceedingly basic – nearly to the point where you could mistake it for a DS demonstration. That no longer holds true.

Nintendo and.... a large 3rd party... are passing around “final” Revolution footage. An example of what will be used in games. And also what they will share at E3 in five months. According to the note attached to the footage, an extended version will be available by then.

Of course, that's not why you're reading this. What did I see? I really don't know. It was certainly next gen – there's no question in my mind there. However, I lack adequate means by which to describe just how it is next gen. It was pretty, and vivid. It had wondrous lighting and deep textures. I could stare at the horizon in the video and honestly believe it didn't ever end. So, why can't I describe it?

The video itself is odd. I lack a usable example to compare and contrast it too. The video alone, lacking in gameplay entirely, lies at home with the very ideal or the Revolution. It's something entirely new-- devoid of similarity to the way we watch and play as a whole. Damn you Iwata."

I'm surprised no one picked up on this - I've been saying it all along, there is something revolutionary about how the graphics/video are displayed, this one quote gets my hyped more than anything. This is why we havent seen any games, because when we do, thats the Revolution Secret!

Also, from his other quote, which goes with what he's saying

The video was entirely environmental. It featured no character models to speak of. It played out a lot like an Imax film, in that it played through as though you were flying. The video followed a small dirt path, and then darted through a forest before rising and turning around to view the landscape and horizon. Not exactly riveting to read about, but breath taking in a "Wow... this is pretty. I don;t normally see the world from this pov" sense in person.

    Can't wait

    A hint?
    A funny joke?
    Just by accident? (Zufall?)

    lol

    We'll see!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hmmm... Falafelkid is a pretty big gaming journalist, he probably is under a NDA! I mean Miyamoto Interviews, Exclusive stories, he is very important! That could explain why he's going away till e3!

Okay, Here's my crackpot theory. I know Brian won't like this guess but, isn't Fal in Europe...and... so was No End Soon. I really hate to bring that one up again, I haven't believed for the longest time. It all lines up though.

    1) Since when does Fal sign his posts "Andreas"?

    2) He's been leaving us hints that have NDA acronyms all over the banner, the post head, the 1st paragraph, and the rest of the post.

    3) Why would he post about No End soon if he was so vocal that it was fake! This might have been a sarcastic comment but..."With it, they will remove all doubt about them being impostors come May." That sounds like he believes.

    4) Why is the No (NES) in parenthesis?

Regardless, I am in full conspiracy theory mode for the next few months.

  40. Call me crazy, but I think this NDA 'theory' has some merit to it. As far as I can recall, falafelkid never before highlighted the first letter of each paragraph. Even then, its odd that the 'A' of Andreas would be highlighted. Couple that with the fact the the Linda Bull header appeared the day of this last post...it seems like more than a coincidence. By the way, does anybody know who Linda Bull is? I'm not too versed in modern art/artists?

Maybe Falafelkid really is under some NDA so he won't be able to post again until after E3? I know that sounds crazy, but given these coincidences, I don't think its an illogical conclusion.

  44. Did you notice that Fal's last entry was posted on the 31st of March?
This would co-incide with an NDA which starts on the 1st of April.
It would also explain why Mr Inc's blog was withdrawn before this date too...

    ReplyDelete
  45. Klind - you're right, I don't like it, but I know for several reasons that it's not really possible ^_^

    2. Rebus over on Mr. Inc's blog sounds very like Remi Ebus, a... well, I don't know how to describe him. He worked on the C64 version of Lemmings with a development studio which name I cannot recall. It is said that Remi was useless with all things technical and was there basically as a manager, perhaps. Commodore Force, a UK magazine, once listed all the team members, as such -

    "Thomas Mittelmeyer - Programmer
    Leon Van Rooy - Graphics
    Jeroen Tel - Music
    Remi - Remi!"

Notice all the names? That's right, these people weren't German. They were Dutch. Remi Ebus is Dutch and I know he's been working as a member of the press for years, and obviously he has been involved in game development. Over on Mr. Inc's blog, there was a comment somewhere about Mr. Rebus not being technically minded. Hm.

    3. Dear God, the grammar, punctuation and spelling on Mr. Inc's blog was atrocious. And not just that, but his writing style was completely at odds with Falafel's.

    4. Falafelkid is a journalist - he has contacts but he is not involved in game development. Mr. Inc claimed to be part of a European development team working on the Revolution.

    5. I talk every now and then with Falafel. He is NOT Mr. Inc, and if he turned out to be, I'd have to travel to Germany to give him a good kicking, because we have discussed Mr. Inc several times and all we ever said was, "People will believe any idiot over a blog. The typical human intellect is crashing and burning."

    6. I'm a 4th Kyu Kendoka... I have several swords at home and I know how to use them. If Falafel admitted that he was Mr. Inc, I would be forced to travel to Germany and lop his head off ^_~

I think he is as saddened as I am that there are still fools like IALS out there or Azrev who write meaningless nonsense like, "Are you ready?" instead of the factual announcements Falafel makes here on his blog. E3 will make fools of all these people, but the bigger fools will be those who believed them.

So I say now with great foresight - stop feeding the idiots. They'll all either admit it and laugh at those who beleived them come E3, or they'll say they knew what was happpening anyway but couldn't say anything because of an NDA.

Yeah, right. Like any developer under an NDA from Nintendo is going to post secrets about the Revolution on a freely available to the public blog site.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I was like "Oh you guys think too much and have too much time on your hands" but upon looking at each paragraph you are right. Especially the first 3 which have the first letter in different colour. The signature is also in bold.

Either way makes no difference and pointless thinking about it further.

As to Brian, I couldnt agree any more. Fal is not Mr. Inc and I have been sick and tired of all these idiots trying to fool people. These fakers either have an ego problem, psychological problem, trying to make fools out of people or most likely all 3. Grow up.

BTW if you break Nintendo's NDA's refer to point 6. in Brian's post.

  52. Brian, I never really said he was Mr. Inc. I just said they were both from Europe (Well whoever Mr. Inc could have been anywhere). I agree with you on most of your points and I just posted my initial reaction. You are probably excited about E3, and you also probably have some odd theories as well. I just posted my theory, at that time.

Here's my new theory. I think that some of these blogs are created by real developers, just to get people excited about the console codenamed Revolution. Viral marketing, right? It doesn't have to be factual, just poking the flames. I think some early ones might have been by real developers(still not saying they were true!) but then they knew if they said they were fake that would be an easy escape. Then everyone else wanted to emulate them, so thats where we get the new blogs. This Idea seems more logical to me.

Also I think that some of the interface mockups floating around could at least be prototypes. I mean look at what the xbox 360 did. The prototype console designs were showing up everywhere! Knowing the internets reaction to most all pictures that aren't official from good ol' Ninty (FAKE!) why couldn't at least one be real?

    look at this forum thread:
    http://forums.nintendo.com/nintendo/board/message?board.id=revolution&message.id=426259#M426259

A picture of the controller was leaked, and every one said "FAKE!" or "They could tried harder than that!" or my favorite " This is so old it isnt even funny!XD"

My point is that I think something that has been "leaked" will turn out to be real. And I am not talking about anything dealing with VISORS! But in the event that that turns out true (please no) I knew it all along.

And Brian, sorry about all the crap I gave you over at NES, you are very smart, and I am very gullible. Sorry.

  59. Falafelkid has never been one to play games. But thats exactly why these NDA clues are so strange. If any of us found those same clues on Osoko Tanaka's blog, we probably wouldn't give it a second thought.

Its just speculation, but I believe that Nintendo revealed the final secret to developers at GDC. Perhaps some journalists were even let in on the secret too. I don't exactly know how a company would put a journalist under NDA, I don't even know if its possible. But I do know that people inside the industry know a lot more than the public does. Yes, its far-fetched, but I think its possible that Falafelkid is under NDA. Its not a likely scenario, but I find it possible.

Either way, its somewhat of a moot point. In about 30 days, most of Nintendo's NDAs will have expired anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Journalists are put under NDA's all the time. It's easily 'possible.' All you do is say, we will tell you this info only if you don't tell anyone else. Thats basically it.

For refference, see Matt Assimassina. That guy knows about EVERYTHING before it happens (Nintendo-related).

  65. Why are you throwing conspiracys now Fal?
Do you now know more then we do?

    ReplyDelete
  66. i like your idea zaro. it would definately revolutionize normal board games as we know them. okay, revolutionize in the sense that we can now play them without being in the room together. you know playing a video game version of something like monopoly doesn't do it justice.

on another note, i was just thinking about the revmote and the tip of it, you know, the IR cover thingy. I am questioning the need for IR especially if they used the revmote in a demo as a plane flying through the air around island delfino(i think that was the updated version of the demo shown). i question it because if any of us were to create a flying game with the revmote, we wouldn't want to limit the direction the plane would travel. therefore, if when holding the revmote and you wanted to turn around, you would turn the revmote and have it face toward you. how would IR work in this instance? (my assumption here is that this was how the demo worked) if the IR tip of the revmote was facing toward you and away from the tv/sensory black wand thing, it wouldn't pick up the signal.

if thats the case, maybe the IR tip of the revmote is something they just threw in there to cover up something else that is underneath or taken the place of by the IR tip.

that could possibly be the other secret of the revmote.

now what would they put in that spot?

Fal is about the only guy who has been consistantly reliable with revolution info and now he clearly shown hes under NDA (there cant be any argument about that after his less than subtle clues) and better than that hes dropping us clues (Allbeit criptic ones).

Anyone got more idea than me about the meaning of the link?

    ReplyDelete
  71. @ogo

no idea about the link. somthing to do with the name maybe? russian revolution? agh - i dont know.

The more I think about it the more odd this is though, Fal wouldnt just do this for nothing. He never has before.

    Quotes from the last post:

*BE ALERT, NINTENDO’S VIRAL MARKETING HAS STARTED WHICH WILL BUILT UP THE HYPE LEADING ALL TO E3 2006 !!
Has this got anything to do with Fal?

*I would have wished to be able to post in detail about Matt´s chore list in that IGN discussion and various other rumours going around, some of which are quite intriguing. But I simply can´t. Sorry.
Suggesting maybe it has maybe this is relavent?

*Looks like the tables have turned now ;)
I know it means in it most obvious sence (so please stop pointing it out!) but its a little bit of an odd thing to say anyway. Even more old to put it in bold

  77. also, another thing that certifies the "NDA" thing is the name of the last post... "Nintendo-Revolution down awhile"....just take the first letter of each word, and besides, that sentence is wrong.....and falafel's writing is very good (near perfect i would say) so that can't be coincidential :P

and the other link.....maybe a new Advance Wars? or Revolution Wars? :P

    ReplyDelete
  78. Okay
Lets get all the information together.
Fal posts his last post on March 31. He says that he cannot post until after e3 because he is going to be working on a music video, which might take him to LA. This seems kind of phony but moving on. The post contains lots of NDA clues. The heading of the blog changes to include these clues. He posts a reason as Red Steal. A little while later people find out about the Red Steal game from Game Informer. Obviously, Falafelkid new about this game because he posted a reason. And, this is the reason that he was under an NDA, because we were questioning about NDA and Red Steal was pretty much his response as the reason. Now, what does this mean? Why would he have to stop posting for NDAs until E3 if he only knew about this one game. It does not make sense. It also is very odd for him to leave clues. And, maybe for the first time in Revoluton history, the clues a blogger left ended up being warranted. Something actually happened, but yet he still won't post. I am confused.

Since GI took the liberty of publishing the story already (ahead of the arranged embargo, as far as I know), allow me to point out that what you see in those scans are ´tentative screenshots´ if you will. quote from Falafelkid :

those screens are not nesesarily coming from revolution hardware, remember that final kits are to arrive in june, anyhow Ubisoft always retouches their in game screens, I never said that is never gonna look like that, hell it might look a little better but its most likely running on a computer....

but then you say GI already played it, let me remind you that there is no proof that they played off the hardware, now if you find something otherwise proving that they played with the actual hardware i'll shut up and say:

    I got pwned

    ReplyDelete
  101. Falafelkid, do you still think the 3rd secret will be bigger than the controller? We always thought Nintendo didn't show any games because of that secret and now we got those Red Steel screens which didn't reveal anything at all.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Falafelkid and all,

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that is proof he has touched the controller and perhaps played the game. My reasoning, the cord on the left looks like the one that connects the revmote to the nunchuka and there is a picture of a guy playing, along the game above. There is nothing more to my thinking than that.

I do wonder why these two statements in less than 24 hours conflict:

They could be screenshots alright. But they could be running on all sorts of hardware.

    vs.

Since GI took the liberty of publishing the story already (ahead of the arranged embargo, as far as I know), allow me to point out that what you see in those scans are ´tentative screenshots´ if you will.

    --------------------

I understand you may be limited in what you could say, but seriously, what is it? "Could be screenshots" as in "I don't know" or "tentative screenshots" as in "I know but I can't tell you". I'm not trying to challenge your credibility, I just want to pin down some solid information.

On another note, I trust your credibility, but you're starting to have those seriousgamer007 tendancies again. :-) For some reason, I don't mind these techniques from you, because I think you are honestly trying to tell us something credible. It's just that I've become acustomed to you coming straight at us with your thoughts and information, and now I have to be Sherlock Holmes...ha, ha. Anyways, keep the hints coming, and tell us if we are getting hot or cold.

If you have enough time to photoshop, I can't see why you can't make another thread about how you are doing, not just Nintendo related, but also your filming project.

    Good Luck with your endeavors,

But they could be running on all sorts of hardware." Meaning that he doesn't have a clear answer himself. Maybe what Falafelkid also meant that the game might look better since it's not the final version.

I regret having contributed to this debate. It´s irrelevant since RS is a great game regardless of what kind of graphics it will offer in the end. I am also sure that the game will look just like the screenshots. All I wanted to point out is that the game may not have been running on Revolution hardware. And I do have a clear answer. I just can´t say too much.

Sorry, both of you are greatly mistaken. Journalists are never given pre-debug kits (if there are such things, which I highly doubt). Journalists are allowed to visit studios. What is shown in this image are simple debug cubes. You can tell by the dark green colour. Neither the Gamecube dev kit, nor the Rev dev kit look anything like those.

The graphics in the photos do look very good though.

Either way I'm more interested in what else is coming in the way of platformers (Mario mainly), action and new types of games that will get me interested.

  143. nintendo has at least 7 in-house revolution games they want to show at E3. quite frankly, there are too many games to be shown in a one hour presentation. thus, the NDA ending on 4/20, a few weeks before E3, comes as no surprise. people have predicted this for months, even though we didn't know the exact date.

red steel, call of duty 2, and some others will have trailers/screens put up on IGN and other big sites. big third party games like final fantasy:CC will be saved for E3.

journalists have recently been preparing for the big no-NDA day. they have been invited to try out multiple games, so they can begin their write-ups and have them posted right on the day. i dont know falafelkid, but obviously he also got to play some games.

4/20 will be a great day, i can't wait to see your guy's reaction :-)

“...In my head there is a voice, different from the others. Whenever it answers it overwhelms the remaining voices, it mixes up thoughts and destroys peace. It tells me that I'm only mixed up in a thought which yearns to prove its own existence. The voice which whispers that I'm not really who I am and the perceived reality is only an abstraction created by my own mind. It is the original voice, which wants to free itself from my head, to free itself from the logic and reason it is being stifled by. The voice of animal endurance at all costs, which forces onto unimaginable things. It is the voice of chaos which is now screaming frightfully in my head for me to take an axe resting against the wall and cut off my father's head.”

sounds fuckin kickass!!!! let's hope it takes a page from Eternal Darkness and totally fucks with your head while you play...

and check out this strange excerpt:

    MULTIPLAYER:

    - Split screen multiplayer with traditional deathmatches.

    - Totally original multiplayer modes Ubisoft is not revealing yet. Wait until E3.

hmmmmmmm "totally original" huh? what the hell could that mean? pretty much every type of multiplayer mode possible with current consoles has already been done, right? even if this was a variation of something that's already been done, they wouldn't refer to it as "totally original" i don't think...

  165. Over on the Official Nintendo Magazine forums, the Associate Editor has made some comments...

"There will of course be other stuff hitting before E3. . . there's simply too much good stuff to hold it all until E3."

"I think it's public knowledge that many third-parties are working on codename Revolution titles. Given magazine lead times it would therefore be logical for various press types to have seen these games already in order to get them in the relevant issue of the magazine. The next four weeks are going to be an exciting time for you guys. . . but more than that, there's plenty that won't make E3. . . stuff that will come to the surface between May and December. E3 is gonna be the bomb but it's only the tip of the iceberg."

"And one last thing I should point out on this topic:
When those screens were taken Nintendo internal teams were the only teams to have FINAL dev kits. I highly doubt that any games you see at E3 will be truly representative apart from first-party Nintendo titles such as Metroid Prime. It'll take a few months for the third-parties to give out truly representative screens."

  177. Certainly in this country at least (UK) Games TM (20th), Official Nintendo Magazine (delayed until the 20th), coupled with Game Informer would add credence to the "NDA expirires 20th" theory even if it is just for Red Steel.

Also if Matt C et al want to slander Fal by saying he's just another kid, it really makes them seem petty, and not just a little bit sour.
Fal showing the Red Steel board game a few days before the Red Steel game shots leak is (for me) enough to confirm his credibility.
    Matt C's latest blog saying
'I didn't sign an NDA so nobody else did'
    is akin to saying

First, where did Matt C call Falafelkid "just another kid"?

Second, you are not paraphrasing, you are putting words in peoples mouths, which is a big difference.

People call other people names to project themselves as "higher / better" than others. You don't have to say that. You infer it when you call someone else names.

Someone else above has commented that IGN was slating fal over at insider which is why I say "matt c et al".
Et al means a number of people, or associated people, not neccesarily that paticular person it was also not a quotation and not presented as such.

I WAS paraphrasing "this" is a quote 'this' is paraphrasing. If I was putting words into peoples mouths I would be useing quotation marks.
Paraphrsing is a restatement of a text or passage in another form or other words, often to clarify meaning.
After reading matt's blog it seems quite clear to me what he's inferring when he say's
"I have not signed any NDA that expires on April 20 and unless Nintendo is planning to spoil its E3 presence three weeks early, I seriously doubt anybody else has, either." (that's a quote btw).

Not that any of this was the point of my post. The point was to draw attention to the 20th date and why I believe it has credence. Why I believe Matt's not privy to the same information some other journalists are, and the slating fal is apparently currently recieving at IGN indider is unwarrented.

    TokeYo

PS, yes I'm a very bad man for calling someone a name, still wouldn't invite him to a party though :)

PPS,I'm a writer myself and get into the habit of useing coy (some might even say misleading) wording due to my job, although it is grammatically correct I don't blame you for assuming everything I write (without adding IMO) is not opinion. I'll try to write a bit more lamen next time.

    ReplyDelete
  187. It was an in-accurate paraphrase. That is my beef. Matt C states that he doesn't have an NDA that expires on the 20th. He also states his position that he doubts other people do not have one because it would spoil Nintendo's E3 presence. I am yet to read where he states that because he doesn't have one no one else does. Could you point that out to me please, in laymen of course?

    D-Bone

    ReplyDelete
  188. TokeYo,

Matt said that he has not signed any NDA that expires April 20th. This could easily mean that he has signed an NDA that expires AFTER April 20th, and also suggests to me that he expects many other journalists have also signed NDA's that expire AFTER April 20th.

All he was saying is that he highly doubts anyone has signed an NDA that expires on April 20th, not that noone has signed an NDA period.

So, he didn't at all say 'I wasn't invited so there can't possibly be a party'. He said 'I was invited to the party along with everyone else, and we're partying all the way to E3'.

    Cheers

  190. Cubed3 Interview the creator of Broken Saints, Brooke Burgess

He has alot of stuff to say about the Revolution...

C3: Having your ear to the ground, have you heard any interesting rumblings related to the videogame Industry recently, especially on the Nintendo side? Perhaps from any of your ex-Electronic Arts colleagues?

BB: You mean the whole Stereoscopic Revolution speculation wasn’t enough for you?!?!

    http://brokensaints.com/blog/?p=48

When I posted this almost a year ago, based purely on personal speculation and some industry detective work and whisperings, the reaction was overwhelming…and not all in a good way. Our server was slammed. The site crashed several times. A malicious code-kid hacked our PHP forums – with over 100,000 personal and poetic posts from the previous four years – and wiped them out. And when Nintendo failed to tip their hand at 2005’s E3 with confirmation either way? Well…I was more than a little vilified by the hardcore loyalists, and was accused of making the post for a short-term boost in traffic, and teaming with an anonymous wanker named ‘Aries’ to stir the pot and stretch our ‘15 minutes’. So let me state unequivocally – all of it’s bullshit. No-one can be held responsible for being linked by major game and news sites because of a relatively innocuous blog post. I certainly did the best digging I could with respect to my journalistic background. The connections between the graphics, film, and display industries were all there…and it doesn’t take a time machine to jump back ten years and remember that stereoscopic 3D has been something the Big N has been playing with seriously for a LONG time (Virtual Boy, anyone?).

And seriously, kids - if the happiness of your collective futures hinge on the nature of ANYTHING in the entertainment industry – a movie, a band, a comic, a game, porn, Broadway musicals, etc - well, you really need to pause and reflect on the emotional and spiritual ramifications of such a focus. Dangerous and frightening stuff…because you are destined to be disappointed.

Now…with that finally said, I do still keep my ear to the ground, and continue to chat with industry pals of varying rank and title from across the publisher spectrum. I like to hear how excited artists are to work on a new franchise with amazing raw assets. It’s a joy getting anecdotes from SEs who are coding for new machines, and bitching how the ‘official specs’ are so inflated, they put government spin to shame (we’re looking at you, 360!). And I absolutely love hearing the straight poop from R and D folk who are playing around with new hardware, tools, and engines, and trying to milk them for everything they’re worth…and often being surprised by the results.

As for Nintendo? Well…I’ve heard it from both sides, really. A couple of tech director peers have certainly whined that the Rev architecture is exactly as stated – merely twice as powerful as the ‘Cube – and that Nintendo’s out of touch with this generation, and will join Sega in the software-only game in the NEXT next-gen. Of course, I’m of the camp that it’s all about DESIGN…you know, like that old story of Miyamoto and the EAD teams playing around with game mechanics using a dot on a screen, and if it’s fun with a dot, then it’ll be fun with snazzy visuals? Remember that wacky old philosophy…the diametric opposite to American publishers, who cram as many A/V distractions and ‘back of the box’ features into a build between Alpha and Beta…and then struggle during the final months, desperately trying to figure out how to make the damn thing ‘fun’?

I’ve got friends working on using the Rev’ controller for all sorts of things. Flying/navigation (oh…and you can bet we’ll see the new Pilotwings in limited playable form at E3). Music titles (Taiko drums, anyone?). Unconventional sports (remember that Rockstar table tennis announcement? That’s something I proposed back in the EA days!). Shooters (DUCK HUNT 2006!!!) Even survival horror using the controller as a flashlight/knife combo! I think a lot of you are going to be VERY surprised at what is shown for Rev’ in a few weeks…and that’s on TOP of the Zelda: Twilight Princess sword and magic mechanics.

C3: What do you think of the Virtual Console scheme for Nintendo’s Revolution? And has its unique control system sparked any ideas in your head - how best could it used for any certain franchise?

BB: As I blurbed above, the news just came down from GDC that they secured sizable chunks of the Genesis and TG-16 libraries for the Virtual Console. Combined with the 8, 16, and 64-bit libraries, this is crazy good news. I’m not worried about controller schematics or download issues or storage or licensing – I have faith that Nintendo will work most of these niggling issues out. But the key to making the VC scheme work will be in the pricing – period. I’m a sucker for intense childhood/teen nostalgia as much as the next geek, but if I have to pay 19.99 per month on top of my gas, electric, cable, and phone bills just to play Kid Icarus, Street Fighter II, and Goldeneye, then it ain’t that appealing to me. However, if they make it possible to earn games as part of a Revolution Rewards™ system, or create a no-frills annual credit/debit scenario, then I think it could be a HUGE success. And hey…wouldn’t it be neat if indy designers and garage teams could upload their own emulated content for evaluation and user-based competition? So many possibilities…I’m starting to froth.

Finally, when it comes to the ‘Rev Remote’, I teased a couple of ideas above – things that were already being bandied about by developers and designers that confab with regularly. Personally, I can’t wait to skulk through a subterranean cavern in the new Metroid and leap around the living room like a spaz during a heated boss battle. Fighting games (boxing with two controllers, anything with swords that allowed for slash, stab, and parry, etc) would really turn my crank, too. Racket sports spring to mind almost immediately (putting spin on a tennis smash!), as do shooters like Time Crisis and Virtual Cop, where some real innovation could happen with targeting and movement via the nav pod.

    ReplyDelete
  198. Zaro,

While I'm uncertain how likely that would be..

The heart monitor would make absolute sense for a game like Sadness.

Didn't the someone at Nibris say comment on how the game was not for the faint of heart?

I realize that Nibris is a distant third party developer, so this would seem unlikely. However, it is an interesting situation.

  199. A couple more conclusions regarding the black wire. What is the original source of these photos? Is this a Ubusoft photoshoot? I’m guessing that these aren’t actual play photos. It is unlikely that people would be testing a game in front of a white backdrop while staring into a camera. Therefore, it is likely that a model controller would be used for these “action shots.” Much like the controller that was seen at GDC. It is noted that the IR transmitter on the front is different than that of the controller seen at gdc (http://media.revolutionreport.com/hardware/gdc06_rev3.jpg). Therefore it is confirmed that a different controller is being used.

However, it’s most likely that it is just the developer controller.
