On News.com staff writer Marguerite Reardon has written an analysis piece that explores the possibility of internet giant Cisco Systems, Inc. buying Nintendo. Here´s what she writes:
Already Cisco has announced plans to spend $6.9 billion on cable set-top maker Scientific-Atlanta. When the deal closes in the next couple of months, it will be the third significant acquisition Silicon Valley-based Cisco has made in the consumer realm. The question now is, who's next? (...)Other potential candidates include TiVo, Sling Media and Ruckus Wireless. If Cisco really do have their eye on Nintendo, they are unlikely to make a move soon. Murray Arenson, a senior analyst at Ferris Baker Watts, is quoted in the same article:
Another possible acquisition candidate for Cisco is Nintendo, the No. 3 game console maker in the U.S. A stretch? Not really. Microsoft, which is emerging as a key competitor to Cisco in the home entertainment market, is already in this market with the Xbox 360. Gaming has already proved to be a strong application for broadband, so it makes sense that Cisco would want to own a game device to help drive more traffic on its network. With its popular GameBoy product, Nintendo would also provide Cisco an entree into the mobile-handheld market.
"Cisco will go slowly in digesting Scientific-Atlanta. There are still a lot of hanging question marks to answer before they go out and acquire anything else in this market."Also, a Nintendo takeover would be no easy feat. I cannot find any reliable info on the total value of the company. Estimates on various forums range from thirty to forty billion US dollars. Either way, they seem to be well prepared. In June 2003, Nintendo repurchased almost 8 million of their own shares. Late last year, they bought another 2 million. Such moves are commonly seen as protecting themselves against possible takeovers.
When Bill Gates expressed his continued interest in buying Nintendo in the summer of 2004, Games Industry reaffirmed that the majority of shares are held by former president Hiroshi Yamauchi. They also called Nintendo ´the most profitable business in the games industry´.

I seriously doubt Nintendo would ever be bought out.
ReplyDeleteThey wouldn't allow it.
Gaming for me would be dead then.
Hi Runnin_Blue. Like I wrote in my post, it would be rather difficult to buy Nintendo. With the majority of shares belonging to Nintendo, a hostile takeover is impossible. So Nintendo would have to agree to any such deal.
ReplyDeleteHey Fal, its me again,Lightshedder
ReplyDeleteI was just concerned about something the other day after talking to my cousin (who used to work for Acclaim back then by the way).
He was worried about the PS3 not taking shape in due time since Sony seems to maintain a low profile on the matter.
He ended up wondering if it might have something to do with the design issue..
I on the other hand am inclined to believe that Sony-keeping track of the 360 not being received too well, particularly in Japan-is starting to scrutinise their well tried formula of success.
After all the PS3 won't have the DVDplayer-bonus-impact its predecessor had, going for it this time around so whats left-similiar to 360-is merely a visual bumb,to which degree albeit remains uncertain.Sony might be putting it self on the line by resembling 360.
Anyway, what I am driving at is that in my humble opinion it wouldn't be too far-fetched to presume that Sony is busy copying
the technology of the "remote" controller which in all likelihood seems to illustrate the driving force behind the whole Revolution-concept.Furthermore,It only adds weight to this argument,if one gets it straight that the "remote" controller will likely mark a logical progression as far as interfaces are concerned(I assume its not necessary to elaborate any further why this is the case).
How do you access the situation?

thanks for your advice about the stocks in the other thread, falafelkid. Do you think I should sell a week after DICE? I've done a lot of research, and I think it's a pretty safe investment. I'm definately going to invest, but the question is when. When I look at the beginning of each year, it seems that the stocks reach a peek around januari and always go down 8-10% around march-april. Should I sell some time after DICE and buy again in may? I'm not looking for that much profit, so I would be satisfied with only 6% or more.
ReplyDeleteHi Lightshedder. I don´t think Sony will copy the controller. The analogue stick and wireless controller ideas were natural progressions. The Rev controller, for being so unusual, is not. In my opinion, Sony would be hesitant of implementing anything that is too unusual and may require specific development.
ReplyDeleteHi Stabby. I would not recommend such short term investments. I myself will buy more stock before D.I.C.E. and probably hold the shares until after the console´s release. The shares may jump immediately after the last secret is revealed, but maybe its benefits will not immediately be clear to the market. Then, there mya not be a significant change until all three consoles are on the market.
Thanks falafelkid. I have noticed that the stocks go down quite a bit around februari/march EVERY year. A peek was reached around januari. Even the European release of the DS didn't do that much. If you look closely, you'll see that the same value of januari isn't reached untill the end of that year. It happened in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Couldn't that just happen again?
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be better to sell after DICE when the stocks have rised 6-10%, then wait for it to lower another 6-10% and buy some again?
light shedder why do you insist on posting the same exact thing on multiple topic comments, it reall is annoying

ReplyDeleteThank you, Falafelkid for updating your blog on such a regular basis. I check it out usually right as I start work in the mornings, and it's become a ritual that really pays off.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonym. Thank you for your kind comment. That´s really what I do this for, people who appreciate this blog.
ReplyDeleteStabby, in the end you have to do what you think is best but I happen to know a bit about the securities industry. If you are interested in aquiring stock it is usually easier and more convenient to aquire round lots (100 share increments). If you want to buy before DICE then do so, as you feel that the value will fall around March, you might want to purchase "puts" on Nintendo stock that expires in April with a strike price close to what the market value of Nintendo stock is at. If the stock falls dramatically a put will allow you to sell the stock for a specified price, though you still hang on to your stock in case it doesn't fall steeply or increases in value. Obviously I don't know your situation finacially or what you consider to be your financial goals so you have to do what you feel is best or consult a professional.
ReplyDeleteBack on topic: I'd say that Nintendo is far too proud of a company to ever sell itself to soomeone else at this point in their existence. Similar to how they have said that they would not make a move like SEGA, and become a software only entity. Nintendo is Nintendo, and they shall be until it is no longer.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, take a look at this, from the same forum:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.beyond3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27863
Secondly there is a non spoken law about giving advice about what shares to buy.
It says "DONT", because you could be giving advice leading to another person loosing money.
So if youre buying shares, read up first, and take resposibility for your own deals.
Third ehh -ly? how was it that you put your own picture up again? I tried with both a gif and jpg file but it complained about the formats.. Maybe it was the hosting service, anyone know of a good one?
At last, I dont have much too say about the Sisco deal that havnt been said before, Nintendo would never sell out, especially now.
Oh yeah, almost forgot - its a great blog thank you for putting so much effort into it!
ReplyDeleteNintendo has The power to buy out Companies like Time Warner or Viacom,Not the other way around.

ReplyDeleteNo way. nintendo is about VIDEO GAMES. Not ENTERTAINMENT. Tivo and all that other stuff is not what nintendo is looking for. And if someone bought the company...they'd put theyre 2 cents in and include those useless things to their new systems..and this is what bumps up the prices and nintendo doesnt feel this way...

Hi Arsenis. Of course I check Gonintendo regularly. It´s an excellent source and very valuable to me. They posted the story on the 31st - I did on the 1st. Due to the time difference I often don´t get to see news story originating in the US until the next day.
ReplyDeleteI always read they have around seven billion in the bank. It isn't that they are out of price range for a buyout, it is like you said, the former president owns enough stock to keep it from happening.
ReplyDeleteI can also see why Nintendo is always a topic of takeover. They turn a profit 99% of the time. They own valuable IPs. They have the most talented people in software working for them. They own 80% of the handheld market. And believe it or not the name, Nintendo, holds a lot of value itself in spite of the mud puddle it has been dragged through in the past five years.

Ho Anonym. Thanks for the story. I will post this, naturally. It´s a good example of what happens when you break NDA´s.
ReplyDeleteLightshedder as you can write in english why you write in german? (i hope someone understand my so bad english!) It's quite annoiyng to retrieve a so long post in a language i can't understand at all!
ReplyDeleteI hope next time you'll think of all the readers of that (international) blog.
Luca S. (Italy)
Hi everyone. I have to agree with Luca here. This is an international blog and preferred language is English. Also, Lightshedder, if you continue to post spam, you will get deleted. Get your act together - or get lost.
ReplyDeleteExcuse me Falafelkid but I have to disagree with you on this one. There is some truth to what lightshedder says. Anyway he should do it in English though.
ReplyDeleteHi Lightshedder,
ReplyDeleteLol..
Well said.
Gut so,weiter so :)
Sorry Fal,
ReplyDeleteI thought this blog was open for off topic themes.
By the way what is your definition of spam?
A while back you said somthings in the line of:" I have only ever deleted pure spam from this page, because I don´t want to seem to be censoring anyone´s opinion"
Sorry but I don't get it.Please clarify what bothers you exactly.
Thanks in advance,
-Lightshedder
Lightshedder, how about extremly long identical posts that are posted on three different topics, that is annoying and should be considered spam, how about post it once in topic of preference not the same thing in like 3 different places, cuz it does get very annoying
ReplyDeleteHi Blizz419,
ReplyDeleteSeems like you listen to Ill Bill from Non Phixion..
I guess you are also aware of Doom and Grimm..
yes i am, i do not actually own anything by them yet, but am aware of who they are
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or is Ill Bills brother Necro a little on the weird side?
ReplyDeletelol, yes he is, thats what makes him so unique though
ReplyDeleteI am not sure but it seems to me as if he -even if he doesnt say it-acts like he was a racist..
ReplyDeletei dont see how you would make that kinda assumption, also note necro is Jewish i dunno about you but ive never met a racist Jewish person they are more likely to be on the recieving end not the giving
ReplyDeleteI know that he is jewish but see it seems like he is just down with white people..
ReplyDeleteI have never seen him doing a collaboration with a black rapper..
that coupled with his offensive nature is a lttle bit supect or odd
suspect
ReplyDeleteImmortal Technique is also associated with them
ReplyDeletewell unclehowie records and pscho + logical records are part of the same family, and Q-Unique is part of the Fam and he isnt white, also Sabac as i recal is half puerto rican as well.
ReplyDeleteWhat is it that you appreciate so much about the uncle howie gang?
ReplyDeletei hate commercialized rap, and i think that whole group is extremely talented
ReplyDeletemy favorites are
Jedi Mind Tricks
Non-Phixion
Apathy
Immortal Technique
7L & Esoteric
Krumb Snatcha
Q-Unique
Celph Titled
i'm probably missin a few but in my opinion these are some of the most talented MC's out there
yes with necro himself that is typically correct, but he is unique and i like his style and i get a good laugh from it, however some of the others on my list can get very political
ReplyDeleteBack then hip-hop was about having fun and then groups like boogie down, public enemy, nwa etc. came and gave it a politic touch. After that came kmd, tribe called quest, goodi mob who used it as a forum to make people aware of the social problems in society..
ReplyDeleteWhat I am driving at is that I dont see any kind of message from Necro other than I kill you with the scalpel type of bullshit albeit with moody beats..
eh west coast rap has become to laid abck and commercialized for the most part, then also most rap nowadays is to commercialized
ReplyDeleteHi everyone. I was a bit vague in my last comment. Just to clarify: This blog is open to off-topic discussion. Within reason, of course.
ReplyDeleteSo what do I consider spam? I do consider any lengthy posts in languages other than English spam and will not tolerate them in the long run. It´s perfectly okay for someone to write short posts in German if they have a brief question for me they can´t or won´t translate. But people who are quite capable of writing English should please do so. I want to ensure that the maximum amount of people can follow this blog and that means: English, please. Wherever possible.
Just a quick word to Lightshedder:
"Sorry but I don't get it. Please clarify what bothers you exactly."
You posted meaningless, off-topic rants in German and triple-posted them. That fails on five counts. Don´t pretend to be surprised about this, mate.
hey falafelkid there is a new patent maybe you should check it out..
