Midway develops FPS for all next-gen systems

Midway is developing a first person shooter for all next-gen consoles, including the Nintendo Revolution. Through recruiting company Creative Heads, they are searching for a contract gameplay scripter and a level layout designer to develop a first person shooter at their Austin, Texas studio. The also specifically mention working with ´Unreal Kismet´, the Unreal 3 graphics engine´s visual scripting system.

Further, Midway are looking for a lead animator for an action-adventure game, again to be developed for all three next-gen consoles. The Midway careers page does not make any mention of platforms, though.

EDIT As Joystiq points out, this does not mean that such a game would look identical on all three consoles, not are the Revolution´s graphics necessarily on par with its competitors´ graphics.
Middleware packages, especially ones like Unreal Engine 3 that have a large PC client base, are designed to be scalable. In other words, sure it will run on the Revolution, but don't expect it to have the eye candy turned up to 11.

That being said, this is promising news for any hopes of seeing games ported to all three next-gen consoles. Developers who use software like Epic's engine will not only save themselves from reinventing the graphics wheel every game, but they'll also find it easier to scale their app across all three next-gen platforms, making us happy gamers.
So this piece of news says less about graphics capabilities but more about the availability of mature games on all three systems by means of easy to use middleware tools.

  1. Now, make the FPS for all three systems, make it so that they can all log on to some online multiplayer action, and then watch as the Revolution users lay waste to the PS3 users.

  2. Mmmh thinking about FPS ... since the revmote come in standart, why not releasing a gun shell + IR sensor to be put on wear.

    live Q-zar is great :D

  3. nintendo NEVER suffered in terms of graphics, nor will the Revolution.

    Mark my words.

Besides, let's make a little summary again:

Nintendo spent (almost)the same amount of money for their chips, hollywood and broadway as microsoft paid for X360 chip development! so what for? for non-state-of-the-art chips? never!

  4. Well, but Resident Evil (4) looked almost exactly the same on PS2, so if this graphical bomb is playable on a 294 MHz (CPU) and 147 MHz-clocked (GPU) Playstation, i expect some REALLY great things. BUT not all developers are working their butts off, to gain this graphicsquality! And that's sad!

P.S. I visited a friend of mine yesterday, who owns a Xbox360, and i played it, and lemme say - PDZ DOESN'T look Nextgen at all neither does DoA4, it looks like DoA3 only sharper!

  5. It means that we shouldn't worry about the Revolution's graphics, they will be great and the gameplay will be better than the 360 and PS3. The latter we already knew.

  6. i think you meant "delayed" not denied?!

    Well, whatever!
I hope Zelda: Twilight Princess will NOT be playable with the Revolution-controller. This is a gamecube title, and we WILL get a revolution-zelda sooner or later!

I want to play this game. And i want it on gamecube, and i want it SOON! there's no reason for me, to wait so long, only for some controller gimmicks.

The game is a gamecube title from the groundup, and i really want EAD to take the extratime to add some more features to the game itself.

  7. I should probably email my news instead of posting in the comments next time?

  8. Props @ snes_link, thats funny, and too true. About the graphics, everyone at Nintendo has said over and over again to not worry about graphics (which is exactly why people are worrying about them), if you trust Nintendo enough to want the Revolution before you have even really seen what it can do, I think maybe you can trust them when they tell you not to worry about graphics falafelkid has posted many times about the diverse ways that an underpowered console could make up in graphical prowess through specialized hardware. Fact is though, we won't KNOW FOR SURE what the graphics look like until E3 because Nintendo won't release anything and even if the was a REAL leak on the net, it would be difficult to distinguish/find among all the fakes. @ arsenis and shoxware, Nintendo has never said that Twilight Princess will NOT work with the controller. Point in fact, it would make alot of sense if it did. Unfortunatly if it DOES use the new controller it will certainly come out at Revolution launch, not sooner, as Nintendo will see alot of sense in having such a killer app to push Revolutions out the door. And to say that they are delaying TP to take advantage of "gimmicks" with the new controller is debasing. How can you support the concept of the Revolution and think that the people who invented the controller would put something in THEIR game that wasn't Nintendo-perfect? Personally, I hope that TP WILL work with the new controller simply because I plan on owning them both and if you do too then exercise some patience.

  11. Since everybody is talking about graphics again I've got a question for you.
Remember back in the days of N64:
    http://ign64.ign.com/articles/064/064678p1.html

Would something like this be possible with the Revolution? From 480P to 720P?

  12. wow i didnt realize IGN has been around that long, i think i first heard of them like 2 or 3 years ago

  13. On Ign there is a surreal answer of Perrin Kaplan (master Jedi Perrin??? LOL) on when we'll have some news regarding Revolution. In fact it seems (as expected)we'll have to wait until E3 to fully know anything but some info will come "now and then"

  14. Hi Luca S. Thanks for the good link. Here´s the quote:

"Information about upcoming products never arrives fast enough for anyone with a good appetite, and this is no different. However, as history has shown, Nintendo doesn't tend to invite people to the table until the meal is ready to serve. Now, we don't want you to be absolutely starving by the time you sit down, so we will have a few enticing bits now and then.

    Remember,
(IGN is) special to us and when we're ready to reveal what's so unique and innovative about Revolution, you'll be amongst the first on the planet to get your hands on it so you can tell your readers what emotion you experienced playing it. Until that important and energizing day, please continue to get plenty of exercise and sleep, and eat a balanced diet!"

  15. All systems use those techniques or will.

  16. Unreal engine 3 uses parallax mapping, NOT cube/displacement.

  17. Hey, I don't know whether I'm right about this but...

Now it should be exactly 100 more days until the Nintendo pre-E3 show takes place in Hollywood!

Still 2,400 hours full of fakes and wannabe Revolution-projects in the making, quite a long time...

I hope Falafelkid kicks Reggie's ass for being so quiet about the Revolution once he meets him at E3! Just kidding :-)

    Mach weiter so!

    Tom
