Check out this Gamesradar article. They claim they have got it all figured out. I´m not so sure, but see for yourself.
I have tried to trace this story up and I must come to the conclusion that Gamesradar has been a tad over-zealous here. Of course, I can´t be sure. But I have tried to find the patent on the U.S. Patent Office site, without any luck. Also, why don´t they simply link to the patent in question or, at least, mention either name or number? It´s very suspicious and not much to do with journalism I must say.
Lastly, it mentions a touch-screen. This has been specifically ruled out by either Iwata or Reggie at the press conference. Haptic screens fine, but no touch-screen. I just don´t see the revolution in this patent.
You know, the controller just sounds like a GBA SP that has gyroscopic capablities. This might just be a nice way of saying that the system can hook up to a GBA (or a DS).

Yeah. I´m really sceptical. Especially becuase it mentions a touch screen. That has been ruled out specifically by either Reggie or Iwata.

real patent that was just misinterpreted. everyone is screaming fake, but the patent is real, it's just applicable to the GBA and NOT the revolution's controller.

it applies to the GBA (original model) and the GCN connectivity. After you go to the patent site, examine the images (there are links at the bottom and top of the page). I think it will make more sense after that.

ReplyDeleteIt's really too bad that Gamesradar published this without thinking (enough). It caused quite a fury on the Official Nintendo Forums, with people going as far as claiming the patent was fake.

My clue is as follows. I believe that it is new, for i have never heard of it around of the multiple sites,blogs and boards that i frequent. Remember a while back when people from the Nintendo boards (mentioned on an earlier post on this blog) gathered information on a site known as http://www.neurosky.com/ . While digging around on that site, i remembered the quality of past viral marketing sites based on one of Nintendo's IPs(Metroid). From that site I followed to the site of http://www.mediapainter.com/ which is the site designer of the neurosky site. In that site, i stumbled across a portfolio page which showcases the work of that guy, http://www.mediapainter.com/portfolio.html. And it is there that i believe i see the current logo of the nintendo revolution on a brake pad! look closely. Above that is the word "Revolution" on a title. Either i need my head checked or i see a clue.

You see that logo under the heading "Jasper Performance", on that red block, right? Well, good research and good eyes. But I´m not convinced. Check out their Korean parent company. That site seems authentic.
No, this is all legit. The first site he mentions in his portfolio is Revolution Motorsports here: http://www.rmstuning.com/home.html, the one with the apparent logo is Jasper Performance here: http://www.jasperperformance.com. Couldn´t find a large version of that pic, but there´s nothing there. No N-game, sorry ;)

I'm afraid that looking up patents is not going to to anyone any good. Companies file patents on anything and everything they come up with and not nearly the majority of them ever get used. There is a Nintendo patent for a gameboy/cellphone.....i bet you didn't know that. There are even pictures. It was obviously nixed. Not to mention that patents get approved 2-3 years after they are filed, so you won't find any revolution info in there. BTW dont you think Nintendo knows that patents are public info? They are not about to give away all of their ideas before they announce it.
